In brief

Since patches 1.6 and 1.7, the wildlife of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has nothing to do with what it was in 1.4: every mutant, from the Boar to the Controller, has received a rebalance that makes them fearsomely effective. This guide breaks down each creature's weaknesses, the ideal ammunition to dispatch them, and the tactics that keep you alive in the Zone.

The Zone has never been a playground, but since patches 1.6 and 1.7 of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, GSC Game World has seriously overhauled the wildlife. A-Life 2.0 recalibrated, Bloodsucker hitboxes tightened, Controller psi resistance rebalanced, the Pseudodog pack finally coordinating its attacks: encounters that made you shrug in 1.4 can now empty an entire 5.45 magazine without flinching. Fifteen days before Patch 2.0 and the Cost of Hope expansion expected on August 20, 2026, here is the complete survival guide, mutant by mutant, ammo by ammo, for Skif and his Sphere Belt.

This guide follows our Post-Patch 1.5 Starter Guide published on July 31, 2026. It assumes you know the basics of survival (radiation, hunger, bleeding, artifacts), but it doesn't spoil any narrative line from the main campaign beyond what's strictly necessary to warn you of a scripted confrontation.

The classic mutants: Boar, Flesh, Rat, Pseudodog

These are your first neighbors around Zalissya and the Cordon, the ones you run into before you even have a real rifle. Underestimated in 1.4, they bite much harder in 1.7.

Boar (mutant boar). Charges in a straight line, doesn't turn quickly. Count on 3 rounds of 5.45x39 to the skull or a single 12/70 buckshot shell at point-blank range. Patch 1.6 nerfed the stagger: don't expect to stop it dead with a simple PM anymore. In a pack (3 to 4 individuals), climb onto a crate or a car wreck, they can't jump.

Flesh (cyclopean porcine mutant). Slower than the Boar, but its screech paralyzes for half a second within 4 meters. One 9x19 round to its single eye is enough, otherwise aim for the chest. It's edible for NPCs, not for Skif: don't waste time skinning it.

Rat. Always in swarms of 6 to 12 individuals, laughable HP but they bite in packs. The MP-133 shotgun with small buckshot remains unbeatable: one shot sweeps 3 to 4 rats. Save your rifle ammo for more dangerous threats.

Pseudodog. The real trap of the early campaign. Since 1.6, it systematically summons 2 to 3 spectral clones that bite you for real on Veteran and Stalker difficulties. The counter: aim for the dog that doesn't bark (the clones make no footstep sounds). A short 5.45x39 burst is enough, otherwise a 12/70 slug. The Blind Dog, its blind variant, lives in larger packs but doesn't generate clones.

The predators: Bloodsucker, Chimera, Snork

The ones that make you change your underwear after a nighttime encounter in an empty building in Rostok or the Red Forest.

Bloodsucker. The franchise's emblem. Active stealth (partial invisibility with a refraction effect), frontal charge, a suction attack that drains you 40 to 60 HP. Since Patch 1.6, it has a vulnerability window when it pulls back its tentacled mask to attack: a 0.4-second window where a .308 Winchester round to the head knocks it down. Without a heavy weapon, keep your back to the wall, 12/70 slug rounds only, and throw an F1 grenade at your feet the moment it charges (patch 1.7 rebalanced the area damage, it rarely survives). Never follow it into a corridor: it knows the terrain better than you do.

Chimera. The Zone's alpha predator. Two heads, leaps up to 15 meters, dodges bullets during its jumps. Encounters mostly occur at night in the Red Forest and around Yantar. Mandatory ammunition: 7.62x54R (Mosin Vintar / SVU) or .308 caliber, and ideally the RPG-7u grenade launcher if you've recovered one from a Monolith fighter. Aim for the chest between its two leaps: the shooting window lasts about 1.2 seconds. Never leave cover, it can take you down in 2 jumps.

Snork. A former human, now infected, quadrupedal with a gas mask. 6-meter leap, claws that cause bleeding almost every time. Patch 1.7 increased its HP by 15%, it no longer goes down to a single AKM burst. Aim for the head (the gas mask has offered less protection since 1.6), or shoot its legs to interrupt its jump. In a pack of 3, always keep a wall behind you: they surround you.

The giants: Pseudogiant and massive deer

Rare, spectacular, and capable of reducing a Duty squad to mush.

Pseudogiant. A massive bipedal creature, it stomps the ground to trigger a seismic shockwave that knocks you down and deals internal damage. Since 1.6, the wave has an effective radius of 12 meters instead of 8: jump the moment it raises its arms (the timing is generous, about 0.8 seconds). Weak spots: the belly, exposed when it arches to strike. Ammunition: .308 Winchester on full auto, or AGL grenades if you've recovered a GP-25. Without heavy weaponry, run: a Pseudogiant can absorb 3 magazines of 5.45 without flinching. Expect to need 40 to 50 rounds of 7.62x54R to the body instead.

Massive Poltergeist (Deer-scale variant, introduced in 1.5). This isn't a real boss, but an invisible entity that lifts heavy debris (beams, doors, fire extinguishers) and hurls them at you. The only way to kill it is to shoot the distortion field that betrays its presence (a bluish halo around a floating object). Three well-placed 12/70 slug rounds are enough. Flamethrowers recovered from Freedom greatly speed up the process.

The psi mutants: Controller, Burer, Bureaucrat

The most underrated category in the bestiary. They almost never kill you directly: they make you kill yourself.

Controller. A former human with a misshapen skull. Emits a cone-shaped psi halo that distorts your vision, jams your HUD, and if exposure exceeds 8 seconds, briefly takes control of your aim (you shoot your allies or yourself). Countermeasures: Duty PSZ-9d Universal Protection helmet (psi protection 3), Nightstar or Moonlight artifact equipped, and a shot of vodka right before the fight (temporary 20% psi bonus). Aim for the head, .308 caliber minimum, one well-placed bullet takes it down.

Burer. A dwarf-like figure in a long robe, capable of levitating objects. Its signature ability: deflecting your bullets with a frontal telekinetic field, and ripping your weapon from your hands on higher difficulties. The counter: flank it from the sides, fire quick 5.45x39 bursts to saturate its field, or throw an F1 grenade at it (it has no explosive resistance). Never let it get close: its second attack instantly drains 30% of your stamina.

Bureaucrat. New to S2, arrived with Patch 1.5. A mechanical/anomalous version of the Poltergeist: a translucent humanoid silhouette in a suit, teleporting between several spawn points within a 20-meter radius. It inflicts psi corruption AND cumulative radiation damage on you. The strategy: freeze it between two teleportations with a 12/70 buckshot shot (guaranteed interrupt), or lure it into a thermal anomaly (Burner) that annihilates it in 2 seconds. You mainly encounter them in the basements of Rostok and in the tunnels of Prypiat.

Optimal ammo and weapons per mutant

Field summary, valid as of patch 1.7.x, Veteran difficulty:

  • Boar / Flesh: 5.45x39 (AK-74) or 12/70 slug — 2 to 4 rounds
  • Rat / pack: 12/70 buckshot — 1 to 2 shells sweep the swarm
  • Pseudodog / Blind Dog: 5.45x39 short burst — target the silent dog
  • Snork: 7.62x39 (AKM) headshot, or 12/70 slug to the legs to interrupt
  • Bloodsucker: .308 Winchester (SR-25/M14) headshot when it unmasks, or 12/70 slug + F1 grenade
  • Chimera: 7.62x54R (SVU) or .308, RPG-7u recommended
  • Pseudogiant: .308 in volume to the belly, or GP-25 grenade launcher
  • Poltergeist: 12/70 slug on the distortion zone, flamethrower optimal
  • Controller: .308 headshot, PSZ-9d helmet mandatory, Nightstar artifact
  • Burer: 5.45x39 saturation fire from the flank, F1 grenade
  • Bureaucrat: 12/70 buckshot to interrupt, or Burner anomaly

Fun fact: patch 1.6 introduced a small subtlety regarding Bandits, who often camp near mutants. They take advantage of your fights to shoot you in the back. On Bloodsucker + Bandit patrol encounters in the Garbage, always let the Bandits engage first: the Bloodsucker will prioritize the closest target.

The 5 deadliest encounters of the campaign

Light spoiler: locations and enemy types only, no narrative reveals.

1. The Bloodsucker of the Zalissya security perimeter. A scripted encounter very early on, before you have a heavy weapon. Fall back into the hangar, let it smash through the door, and open fire with 12/70 slug when it removes its mask.

2. The Snork pack in the Red Forest evacuation tunnels. Six Snorks in a narrow corridor. The right strategy: throw a fragmentation grenade, fall back, finish off with the shotgun. Never advance.

3. The Pseudogiant at the X-19 research station (Yantar). The area is riddled with electrical anomalies: lure it in by zigzagging, it takes 300 HP of damage per Vortex tick.

4. The Chimera at Lake Preobrazhenskoye (northern Red Forest). A nighttime encounter with no cover. Bring the SVU + 7.62x54R BP ammo, take cover behind the wrecked bus, and fire while peeking down.

5. The Controller + Bureaucrat duo in the Prypiat basements. Introduced in 1.5. Two simultaneous psi threats in a blind corridor. Vodka + PSZ-9d helmet + Nightstar artifact: kill the Bureaucrat first (more fragile), then fall back down the corridor and use .308 on the Controller.

Conclusion

The bestiary of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 in patch 1.7 is the densest and cruellest the franchise has ever offered. Predators are no longer bullet sponges: each one has its window of vulnerability, its dedicated ammunition, its countermeasure. Fifteen days before the Cost of Hope expansion, which officially reintroduces the Karlik (the famous mutants cut from the original version of Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl) and a new psi mutant in the sewers of Prypiat, now is the time to finish your main campaign and build up a solid stock of .308, 12/70 slugs and vodka. The Zone, for its part, won't go easy on you.

Which mutant gave you the most trouble on Veteran difficulty after patch 1.7?

Frequently asked questions

Why has the Pseudodog become such a headache since 1.6?
It generates 2 to 3 spectral clones that bite for real. The countermeasure: identify the dog that's actually barking (the clones make no sound), focus your fire on it, and the clones will disappear. A short burst of 5.45x39 is enough.
What's the minimum gear needed to face a Controller without getting your aim hijacked?
A Duty PSZ-9d Universal Protection helmet (psi protection 3), a Nightstar or Moonlight artifact equipped, and a shot of vodka right before the fight for a temporary psi bonus. Aim for the head with .308 at minimum.
How do I kill an invisible Poltergeist if I don't have a flamethrower?
Spot the bluish halo around the object it's lifting: that's what gives away its presence. Three well-placed 12/70 slug rounds on that distortion zone are enough. Freedom flamethrowers dispatch it faster.
Are light weapons (5.45x39) enough against a Chimera?
No. The Chimera requires 7.62x54R (SVU) or .308 Winchester at minimum, and ideally an RPG-7u. Light rounds barely slow it down before it leaps on you.
Why does the Snork keep making me bleed even with good armor?
Its claws trigger near-systematic bleeding since the 1.7 rebalance. Aim for the head or legs to interrupt its leap before it hits you, or always keep a spare bandage within reach.

Key takeaways

  • The Boar's nerfed stagger in 1.6 means it charges without interruption: climb onto a crate and it won't jump up.
  • The Pseudodog has generated spectral clones since 1.6; target only the one that isn't barking, and the others will disappear.
  • The Bloodsucker remains vulnerable for 0.4 seconds when it removes its tentacled mask: that's your critical window for a .308 headshot.
  • The Chimera teleports via its 15-meter leaps: only fire during its landing phases, never during the jump.
  • Psi mutants (Controller, Burer, Bureaucrat) don't kill you directly but make you sabotage yourself; a PSZ-9d helmet is non-negotiable on Veteran.
