Path of Exile 2: taking part in the ExileCon 2026 qualifiers (dates, rules, rewards)

The first of the four qualifying heats for ExileCon took place during the night of August 6 to 7, and Grinding Gear Games still has three more in store: Thursdays August 13, 20, and 27 at 11 p.m. Paris time. The principle is as simple as it is brutal: be the first player to take down Tavakai, the Act 4 final boss, with a character created specifically for the occasion in Solo Self-Found. The winner of each heat flies to Auckland, New Zealand, to compete in the final on the ExileCon stage in November 2026.

Contrary to what the word "competition" might suggest, these races are not reserved for an invite-only elite: participation is free and open to everyone, on both PC and consoles. All you need is a Path of Exile account linked to Twitch, an active stream throughout the race, and a click on the "Join" button on the character selection screen.

Here is everything you need to know to take the start of one of the three remaining heats: the exact format, the sign-up procedure, the rules that can get you disqualified, and the best way to prepare for your race.

The format: an SSF race to Tavakai

Each heat takes place in a Runes of Aldur environment with a fixed layout: every participant goes through the exact same zone generation. So no one can benefit from a favorable card draw, but no one knows the layout in advance either, since it changes with every heat. The mode is Solo Self-Found — a term the client and French-speaking press keep in English — meaning no trading between players and no group play: all your gear comes from your own finds.

The objective is singular: be the first to take down Tavakai, the Tribe Chief, faced at the Heart of the Tribe after crossing Ngakanu, the Karui archipelago that serves as the setting for Act 4. The finish line therefore sits at the end of the first four acts' campaign, which represents several hours of play even for the world's best racers.

The event is not ranked hardcore: dying does not delete your character. The penalty lies elsewhere, and it's a heavy one: after each death, your character remains frozen for 2 minutes 30 seconds before being able to resume the race. In an event decided by mere minutes at the front of the pack, a single death is practically eliminatory — that's the whole philosophy behind the format.

Signing up: a Twitch account is mandatory

The procedure comes down to three steps, but the first one is worth anticipating. First, link your Path of Exile account to your Twitch account from the account management section of the official pathofexile.com website. Next, you must stream your entire race live on that linked Twitch account: the rule is strict — if Grinding Gear Games cannot view any portion of your participation, you are not eligible to win, regardless of your time.

Finally, at the time of the event, click the "Join" button associated with the race on the character selection screen, then create a brand-new character. Once it appears in-game, it will remain frozen in place until the starting signal, given simultaneously for everyone. The studio also recommends joining early rather than at 10:59 p.m.

One point changed between the two official announcements: on June 25, the qualifiers were presented as PC-only; the reminder published on July 30 explicitly opens them up to console players. The final at ExileCon, however, will be played exclusively on PC.

The rules that can get you disqualified

• 16:9 aspect ratio mandatory: players who bypass this restriction by modifying game files are disqualified.
• Only one win allowed: the winner of one heat cannot win subsequent heats.
• Terms of use: those of Path of Exile and those of Twitch apply throughout the race.
• Sportsmanship: any unsportsmanlike conduct between now and ExileCon may result in disqualification.
• Employees excluded: past and present Grinding Gear Games employees are not eligible to win prizes.

If a winner is ultimately unable to travel to New Zealand, their tickets, flights, and accommodation are transferred to the player with the next best time, across all heats combined. The unique helmet, however, remains with the original winner.

What the winner of each heat receives

• Flights to Auckland for the ExileCon weekend;
• accommodation on site during the event;
• a place in the ExileCon Path of Exile 2 race final;
• an Ultra VIP ticket to the convention;
• Demigod's Virtue, a unique helmet on a Golden Visage base.

The "Demigod" item lineage has historically rewarded the winners of Path of Exile's official competitive events: these items cannot be obtained any other way, making them markers of prestige as much as pieces of gear.

Preparing for the race: the campaign, the league, and the final boss

The most cost-effective preparation remains the most obvious one: running through Acts 1 to 4 stopwatch in hand, multiple times, to identify where you're losing time. Since the heat's fixed route is unknown in advance, it's your reading of the zone generation patterns and your progression routine that will make the difference, not memorizing a specific path.

Solo Self-Found mode imposes a design constraint: your character plan must not rely on any specific item, since there's no guarantee it will drop. Runners build around skills available early and generic gear, adapting to what they find. The Runes of Aldur environment adds an interesting variable: the Waystone mechanic is active during the race, and well-chosen rune crafting can fill a gear gap at just the right moment—but every stop at a Waystone costs time, and the trade-off between speed and power is constant.

Then there's the finish line itself. Tavakai is a three-phase fight in which totems channel the powers of the Karui gods depending on your position in the arena: some effects heal the boss, others reduce your damage. The fight punishes recklessness, and the death penalty punishes it even further: as you approach the Heart of the Tribe, thirty seconds spent checking your resistances and flasks are worth more than 2 minutes and 30 seconds of forced immobility.

One last clue about the level of competition: according to ZiggyD, co-commentator for the event, this year's veteran runners are keeping their strategies secret until the start, with some even refusing to reveal which class they plan to play. In other words, there is no proven public formula: the race meta will be discovered heat by heat.

Heat schedule and broadcast

Each heat is streamed live on the official Twitch channel twitch.tv/pathofexile, commentated by ZiggyD and RaizQT, and co-streaming is explicitly allowed. The final will be held on the main stage at ExileCon in November 2026 in Auckland; finalists will be able to bring their own build configuration files and their own peripherals. Qualifying races for the original Path of Exile are also planned, but the studio has not yet detailed the specifics.

Why take part even if you're not aiming for Auckland

Let's be realistic: the spots for New Zealand will be contested among professional racers who have been rehearsing the campaign for weeks. But the event has real value for everyone else. Running the campaign in Solo Self-Found on a route identical to that of the world's best is the most honest gauge of mastery there is: your time is directly comparable to theirs, with no excuse about drops. The event character is created specifically for the occasion, so you have nothing to lose — not even your progress in the current league.

In concrete terms, for the August 13 heat: link your Path of Exile and Twitch accounts during the day, start your stream before 11 PM, join the race in advance from the character selection screen, and keep in mind the one rule that really matters in a race — a death costs 2 minutes 30 seconds, whereas caution almost never costs that much.
