Palworld 1.0 Weird Mushroom: where to find it and how to farm it

In brief

Odd Mushrooms are exclusively harvested on Sakurajima island by destroying red and blue mushroom trees, or by capturing a Shroomer Noct. This resource is used to craft Odd Mushroom Juice and the Shroomer Noct Saddle — two recipes that each require 20, which is why it's worth farming thoroughly in a single run.

The Weird Mushroom is a material that can only be harvested on Sakurajima Island. There are two ways to get it: chopping down the island's mushroom trees, or capturing a Shroomer Noct. Here's where to find it and what it's used for.

Getting to Sakurajima Island

Sakurajima is quite far off, and you'll need to travel a good distance to reach it. The most direct route is to head southeast of the Moonflower Society Tower. If you haven't unlocked this boss yet, simply head north, hopping from island to island: you'll eventually come across the mushroom-infested swamps. A swimming Pal or a flying mount will make the trip much more comfortable.

Harvesting via mushroom trees

The island is home to two types of mushroom trees, red and blue: both drop Weird Mushrooms when chopped down. You'll come away with a nice stockpile after sweeping through the area.

As with any tree, you'll need an axe to chop them down - but the basic tool is slow. Craft the Metal Axe instead to save time, or better yet the Plasma Multitool Cutter, which is much more efficient for cutting through trees and rocks.

Harvesting via the Shroomer Noct

Another option: capture or defeat the Shroomer Noct, a small, shy Pal that runs away as soon as it spots you. Killing it nets you a few Weird Mushrooms; capturing it gets you both the materials and the Pal. It's a good investment, since once assigned to your base, the Shroomer Noct releases spores that reduce the mental health loss of your other workers.

What the Weird Mushroom is used for

The Weird Mushroom is used in the crafting of two items: Weird Mushroom Juice and the Shroomer Noct Saddle.

Weird Mushroom Juice is crafted at the Electric Pharmaceutical Workbench:

Ingredient Quantity
Weird Mushroom 20
Beautiful Flower 10
Horn 10
Bone 5
Pal Fluids 5

The Shroomer Noct Saddle, meanwhile, is made at the Pal Gear Workbench:

Ingredient Quantity
Fiber 30
Leather 20
Weird Mushroom 20
Paldium Fragment 30
Refined Metal Ingot 10

Our advice

Each of these two recipes requires 20 Weird Mushrooms: farm the red and blue trees generously while you're there rather than making multiple trips. With a Metal Axe or a Plasma Multitool Cutter, a single lap of the island is enough to build up a comfortable stock for both recipes.

What's your strategy for farming the Odd Mushroom?

Frequently asked questions

Where exactly is Sakurajima island located?
Sakurajima is southeast of the Moonlit Flower Society Tower. If you don't have the boss yet, simply head north, island-hopping until you reach the mushroom-infested marshes.
Which axe should you choose to cut down the mushroom trees?
The Metal Axe is already much faster than the basic tool. If you want something truly efficient, craft the Plasma Multitool Cutter, which blows through trees and rocks in no time.
Is it better to kill or capture the Shroomer Noct?
Capture it, no question. You get the Odd Mushrooms AND the Pal as a bonus, which then releases spores that reduce SAN loss for the other workers at your base — it's a genuine economic gain.
What exactly is the Odd Mushroom used for?
It goes into two recipes: Odd Mushroom Juice (Electric Pharmacy Workbench) and the Shroomer Noct Saddle (Pal Gear Workbench). Both require 20, so plan to stock up.

Key takeaways

  • Sakurajima is located southeast of the Moonlit Flower Society Tower: use a swimming or flying Pal to reach it comfortably.
  • Red and blue mushroom trees are best cut down with a Metal Axe or a Plasma Multitool Cutter to save time.
  • Capturing the Shroomer Noct is a better investment than killing it: you get the Pal AND the resources, plus a bonus reduced SAN drain at your base.
  • Each recipe (Juice and Saddle) requires 20 Odd Mushrooms: a single well-organized run is enough to build up your stock.
