In brief

Palia has doubled its insect collection with the Royal Highlands and Season 2 of Insect-A-Palooza. This guide covers smoke bombs, the skill tree up to level 10, the complete map of the 19 rares, 7 epics and legendaries, as well as tips for turning bug hunting into a genuine side economy.

Cooking, decorating, fishing and mounts have each had their own dedicated guide on playnews.gg, but a whole side of Palia remains underexposed for French-speaking players: bug catching. Since the Royal Highlands opened in May 2026 and Insect-A-Palooza returned for its second season, Auni's pastime has quietly doubled its collection, added two genuine legendaries and turned the net-swinging routine into a real side economy. This guide reviews the best smoke bombs, the up-to-date map of rare, epic and legendary bugs, plus the tips that separate the collector from the profitable hunter. The goal: fill your bug jar and your pockets at the same time.

The basics: Auni, the belt and the smoke bomb

Bug catching officially begins with the introductory quest "Bug Catching Basics." There you meet Auni, the young Majiri who runs the Bug Catcher's Guild and gives you your first Fortune Belt along with a handful of Standard Smoke Bombs. The mechanic is simple to grasp, tricky to master: you equip the belt from the tool wheel, target the bug from a distance, then throw the bomb. If the cloud engulfs the target before it flees, it's caught. Every miss uses up a bomb and gives the bug a chance to disappear.

Bombs come in five official variants, bought or crafted after leveling up:

  • Standard Smoke Bomb: the basic one, available from level 1.
  • Stealthy Smoke Bomb (recipe 50 gold, level 2): doesn't scare off nearby bugs, ideal for clusters.
  • Sticky Smoke Bomb (500 gold, level 4): slows down fast targets, essential for dashing dragonflies.
  • Supreme Smoke Bomb (3,000 gold, level 9): guaranteed capture, best saved for legendaries and missed epics.
  • Elderwood Smoke Bomb: the only one that works against Elderwood-infected bugs.

On the belt side, upgrading from the Fortune Belt to the Standard Belt (200 gold, level 3), then to the Fine Belt (1,500 gold, level 6) and finally to the Exquisite Belt (3,000 gold, level 9) increases the number of bombs you can carry and unlocks consumable slots. All the recipes are available from Auni, south of Kilima Village.

The skill tree: every level counts

Bug catching is capped at level 10, like Palia's other professions. Each tier unlocks a recipe from Auni or new access: level 5 opens up the Smoke Candle (1,000 gold), which prevents scaring off bugs around you for a short window; level 8 unlocks the Buzzing Jars (2,500 gold), a tool that reveals rares and epics within a given radius. The Honey Lure, obtained through events and guild rewards, spawns several bugs around a specific point, which boosts your odds in low-density areas like the cliffs of Bahari Bay.

At level 10, you officially join the Bug Catcher's Guild, which unlocks a group experience multiplier: players near you also receive loot when you catch a bug. Translation: co-op sessions become fearsomely efficient for farming Bug Catching Medals, the profession's currency used at Auni's shop for themed furniture, stickers, and the famous Bug Catcher's Insectarium.

Day/night cycles and biomes: reading an area like a naturalist

The regular hunter's first instinct is to check Palian time before heading out. Three time windows structure the spawns:

  • Morning and day: from 3 AM to 6 PM. This is the realm of butterflies, diurnal cicadas, and bees.
  • Evening and night: from 6 PM to 3 AM. Moths, fireflies, and nocturnal beetles take over.
  • Any time: most crawling creatures (centipedes, mantises, snails, crabs) appear without time restrictions.

Each bug is then tied to a specific biome: open fields, forests, lakeshores, coastlines, cave entrances, cut trees (Sapwood). Ignoring the biome is like chasing a ghost: the Firebreath Dragonfly never appears outside the Mirror Fields and Daiya's farm, the Ladybug Princess requires the east side of Lake Kilima's shore, and the Crackling Cicada only frequents the junk trees along the Bahari River.

Rare bugs: the profession's real economy

The game's 19 rare bugs form the backbone of a profitable session. Here is the up-to-date map, verified against the official wiki:

When sold, a rare bug of star quality fetches between 210 and 260 coins, more than enough to fund intermediate bomb recipes. The real breadwinner remains the nocturnal Baharian Firefly, whose density above Pavel Mines lets you fill an entire bag in a single night.

Epic insects: rarity, timing, and little secrets

Seven epic insects now populate Palia's maps. Two of them deserve a special mention.

The Ancient Amber Beetle appears when felling Sapwood trees in Bahari's forests — Flooded Steps, Outskirts, Proudhorn Pass, Thorny Thicket, Statue Garden. Its yellow and red pattern stands out sharply against the grass; expect 440 coins at normal quality, 660 at star quality. Bring a sharp axe before heading out: the more you chop, the more you multiply your chances.

The Rainbow-tipped Butterfly (Papillon Aurore), long considered the most difficult epic in the game, only appears between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. in the meadows and cliffs of southern Bahari: Pulsewater Plains, Hideaway Bluffs, and above Pavel Mines. Its three-hour Palian window means players need to plan a dedicated session, ideally with an active Smoke Bomb to avoid scaring it off.

The other epics:

  • Enfield Moth: Bahari Royal Highlands, several POIs, any time.
  • Fairy Mantis: Bahari fields, any time.
  • Jewelwing Dragonfly: cave entrance on a cliff in Bahari Bay, any time.
  • Shadvaraak Beetle: new, Royal Highlands, venomous hybrid.
  • Will-o-wisp Rockhopper: Elderwood, forests and swamps, any time.

These creatures sell for between 800 and 1,200 gold in star quality — the equivalent of two average days of fishing in a single well-prepared catch.

The two legendaries: the hunter's Holy Grail

Palia has only two insects classified as legendary, both added alongside the Royal Highlands.

The Ancient Flowbug is the creature Elouisa speaks of in hushed tones during the "Silver-winging It" quest. It's described as a bioluminescent insect long thought to be a legend, from which Bahari Fireflies are said to descend. It can be found at the Temple of the Gales in the Royal Highlands, at any time. It floats slowly through the air and flees as soon as it detects movement or a cloud of smoke; its very slow movement leaves time to place two backup bombs. Bring out the Supreme Smoke Bomb to avoid ruining the attempt.

The Flame Queen is the second legendary, also located in the Royal Highlands: Royal Hunting Grounds, Formae Amphitheatre, House of Nightshade, and coordinate I7 of the Standing Cliffs. It fetches 1,100 gold at normal quality and 1,650 at star quality. It also appears as a narrative NPC in the discovery quest "Flame Wars," which regularly confuses new hunters who believe it's purely scripted.

Crucial point: both legendaries only unlock starting at bug catching level 8. No point chasing them before that.

Elderwood: the special case of infected insects

Since the Elderwood expansion, some local insects can appear "infected" by Corrupted Essence. They are slightly larger, glow red, and reject regular bombs. There are two ways to catch them: equip the Elderwood Smoke Bomb or use the Illusion Bag II obtained through the "Bugging Out" quest line. Without this equipment, the target dissipates the smoke and disappears. Infected insects are then handed over to the Elderwood agent to validate the expansion's progression tiers — and unlock exclusive recipes like the Sneaky Smoke Bomb Elderwood.

Making your hunt pay off: medals, the Bug-ipedia, and weekly challenges

Three weekly bug-hunting challenges reset every Monday at 04:00 UTC. Together they reward a total of 100 Bug Catching Medals. These medals can be exchanged with Auni for furniture recipes, insectarium blueprints, and stickers for your posts on Palia's social channels. The Bug Catcher's Insectarium, unlocked by interacting with Auni, serves as an indoor showcase: every insect caught for the first time automatically adds its entry there, complete with a short blurb from the guild leader.

The second big lever is Insect-A-Palooza, whose season 2 is currently running. The community event sets a global goal — 30 million insects caught server-wide — and unlocks rewards at each milestone that are handed out to the whole community: Supreme Bombs at 10M, a Leafy Flutterfox plush at 20M, a Honeybunch plush and honey lures at the final milestone. Best to make the most of it while the window's open.

Advanced tips to complete the collection

A few habits that make a real difference with stubborn insects:

  1. Always cook a speed dish before a Dawn Butterfly session. Three Palian hours go by fast.
  2. Activate Smoke Candle + Buzzing Jars as a combo in low-density areas: the candle prevents chain escapes, while the jar reveals rares/epics in the vicinity.
  3. Farm the Baharo Firefly rather than daytime butterflies if you're after quick cash at level 5-7.
  4. Coordinate in co-op: the group multiplier at level 10 shares the catches. An evening with four hunters at the Temple of Gales can unlock several Ancient Wave Bugs in a single session.
  5. Check the weather: some rumors of a "rain spawn" are circulating, but nothing has been confirmed on the official wiki as of now. Take third-party guides with a grain of salt.
  6. Mark POIs on the Palia map (via palia.th.gl): every newly caught rare automatically adds its exact location there.

Conclusion: a discreet but essential profession

Bug hunting remains Palia's most underrated profession. It requires neither a farming plot nor heavy equipment, it pays more than you'd think, and at level 10 it unlocks one of the best indoor furniture chests in the game via the Insectarium. With the two legendaries added in the Royal Highlands and the return of Insect-A-Palooza season 2, there's never been a better time to grab Auni's belt. Set yourself a clear goal — completing the rares, farming the epics, or tracking down both legendaries — stock up on the right bombs, and head out before dawn. Kilima, Bahari, Sylvestre, and the Royal Highlands are just waiting for your nets.

Which step is holding back your bug hunting progress the most?

Frequently asked questions

Which insect should you start with to turn a quick profit?
The nocturnal Baharish Firefly above Pavel Mines. Extreme density, 210-260 gold at resale in star quality. One night is enough to fill a full bag and fund your first intermediate bomb recipes.
Do you need to reach level 10 for bug hunting to be profitable?
No, but it speeds everything up. Level 5 gives you the Smoke Candle, which freezes insects around you. Level 8 unlocks Buzzing Jars, which reveal rares and epics. Level 10 brings the group multiplier, which blows up co-op farming. Below that, it's doable but slower.
Is the Dawn Butterfly really that hard to catch?
Yes. Only a three-hour window (3 AM to 6 AM), limited to Pulsewater Plains and Hideaway Bluffs. Cast a Smoke Candle before heading out and prepare for a dedicated session with several supreme smoke bombs.
Which bomb should you use for insects in the Royal Highlands?
The Sylvan Smoke Bomb is mandatory for the Elderwood-infected ones. For the other Highlands epics, use the sticky or supreme depending on your previous failure rate.
Are there really legendaries in Palia now?
Yes, two since May 2026 with the Royal Highlands. The guide mentions them but stays tight-lipped on the exact conditions — it's the ultimate endgame challenge for full collectors.

Key takeaways

  • The five smoke bomb variants radically change your capture rate: the supreme guarantees legendaries, the sticky one takes down fast dragonflies, the stealthy one lets you farm clusters without spooking the rest.
  • Palia time dictates everything: morning for butterflies and bees, night for moths and beetles, any time for crawlers. Ignoring the biome means chasing a ghost.
  • The 19 rares are your bread and butter: the Baharish Firefly above Pavel Mines lets you fill a bag in one night and funds your recipes.
  • Level 10 unlocks the group multiplier: co-op sessions become formidable for farming Capture Medals and stocking the bug house.
  • Epics demand tight timing: the Dawn Butterfly wakes up at 3 AM for only three hours, the Ancient Scarab requires an axe and trees to chop.
