Palia Mount: Unlock, Ride, and Breed a Horse

A horse in Palia is much more than a means of getting around. It's the difference between trudging across the Royal Highlands on foot grumbling to yourself, and crossing them in style, hair blowing in the wind like some generic western hero. This guide covers everything you need to know: unlocking your first mount, managing stamina while riding, and the basics of horse breeding which, let's be honest, can quickly become a financial pit if you're not careful.

Unlock your first horse

It all starts in the Royal Highlands. Take the path leading to Lonely Glen from Lochland Dock, heading toward quadrant I6 in the top left of the map. There, you'll come across Hassian - an NPC standing next to a horse trapped in a block of amber. Yes, it's as strange as it sounds. And no, no one in the village seems bothered by it.

Pull out your pickaxe and smash the block. Simple enough. The horse is freed, but it's in bad shape. To heal it, you need to find Dawnspur Lilies in the immediate surroundings - those golden flowers that are fairly easy to spot in the area once you know where to look. You need exactly three of them. Not two. Not four. Three.

Approach the horse with the flowers in hand and feed it. Hassian then challenges you to ride it - which is a decent move on his part, credit where it's due. To equip the saddle: open your inventory, go to the tools menu, click the saddle icon. Then close the menu, open the tool wheel, and your horse will appear at the bottom. Ready to gallop.

One small but important detail: the tool wheel is your go-to spot every time you want to summon or dismiss your mount. Get into the habit early on, it'll save you from running around on foot wondering where your horse went.

Movement and stamina management

The movement controls are the same as for your character on foot - adjustable in the options to suit your comfort. Nothing weird to report here, it's pretty intuitive right from your first ride.

On the other hand, the stamina bar is the real thing to master. Every horse has one, and it determines how long it can keep up a gallop. When it hits zero, your mount slows down. No stamina, no speed. It's as simple as that, and it can be genuinely frustrating in the middle of an urgent delivery run.

The solution? The shimmering golden orbs scattered along the paths. Ride through them and your stamina refills instantly. Learn their locations on the routes you take often - trips to your plots or to the village - and you'll never be caught out during a long ride. It's the kind of small detail that, once you've got it down, completely changes how comfortable the game feels.

Breeding horses

Once you've recovered your first horse in the Royal Highlands, it joins your stable. If it's full, you'll need to make room before you can take in a new one. Manage your space accordingly, especially if you plan on getting seriously into breeding.

As you progress in the ranching skill, you unlock the ability to breed different types of horses. Each type has its own visual traits and characteristics - some are faster, others have better stamina over distance. But be careful:

Foals born from breeding can be ridden once they reach adulthood. But - and here's where it gets interesting, or even a bit of a trap - any horse other than the standard Dawnspur requires a special license to be ridden. This license is purchased with Palia Coins, the game's premium currency, which involves a real financial investment. Honestly, it's worth keeping in mind if you're planning to build up a varied stable: the cost can climb faster than you'd expect, and there's nothing stopping you from ending up with a lovely collection of foals... that you can't ride until your wallet catches up.

If your goal is simply to have a functional mount for your daily trips, the basic Dawnspur is more than enough. Breeding is really only worth it if you're the collector type or you enjoy optimizing your movement stats over the long haul.
