In brief

Ghost of Yōtei hides seven mythic quests that grant three armors, two exclusive techniques, six charms and three sword kits — essential content for reaching the Platinum, but easy to miss since it's never flagged in the journal until you find the right trigger. This guide shows you where to start each myth, how to complete them without getting crushed in duels, and what they actually reward you.

Seven mythic quests are hidden throughout Ezo, and they're the most rewarding side content in Ghost of Yōtei: three armors, two techniques found nowhere else, six charms, three sword kits and two trophies. None are missable, and everything remains accessible through free exploration once the hunt for the Six of Yōtei is complete.

Yet these are the easiest activities to let slip by: they only enter the journal once a specific trigger is hit, a storyteller at the edge of a road, a sealed door in the mist, a mat laid on the ground in an Ainu village. And Takezo's line grinds to a halt without the Two Katanas, without the game ever flagging it. Myth by myth: where it starts, what it requires, what it rewards, and how not to crash and burn on the duels.

Since the "For Every Occasion" trophy requires every single armor, no path to the Platinum bypasses the Mythic Tales.

Takezo the Unmatched: five duels and one tricky prerequisite

Defeat the opponent stationed at any duel tree in the Yōtei Plains or the Tokachi Mountains: Ugetsu appears to tell the swordsman's story. Five rōnin claim to be from his school and covet his unstoppable strike.

  • Duel among the graves — a little south of the Shikotsu River: Takezo's Charm of the Relentless Warrior.
  • Duel at the foot of the mountain — northwest of the Plains, at the edge of the map: Takezo's Charm of Renewed Will.
  • Duel beneath the red leaves — west of the Tokachi Mountains, north of the Amber Rest shrine, behind the large golden tree: Takezo's Charm of Bold Deflection.
  • Duel in the marshes — Tomamu Marsh, southeast of the Tokachi Mountains; the opponent waits further down, near the waterfall: Takezo's Charm of Invigorating Victory.
  • Duel amid the ruins — Niikappu Falls, northeast of the Tokachi Mountains, in front of the small cemetery: Takezo's Charm of the Valiant Heart.

All of them switch weapons mid-duel: the katana gives way to twin sickles or the spear, and the rhythm shifts in an instant. Two reflexes avoid most of the pointless deaths — draw the Twin Katanas against the spear duelist at Niikappu Falls, and don't reflexively parry the yellow attacks, since they're trying to disarm you with those. The prerequisite nobody talks about is harsher still: the quest can't be completed without the Twin Katanas.

The fifth disciple down, a wanderer sends you to the coastal duel tree, all the way south of the Prairies. Sit on the stump near the fire, follow Takezo on foot, then start the fight: with Atsu's health down to the last third, she comes away with Takezo's Double Slash, which interrupts and hits two targets.

The Five Teachings: the summit's invisible wall

A direct follow-up to the previous one, this quest takes place at the summit of Mount Yōtei, reached by climbing up from the shrine. At the campfire, nothing triggers until all five of Takezo's charms are equipped at the same time. Once the meeting is set in the nearby circle, you can switch back to your usual build.

This is the hardest duel in the game, for a mechanical reason before a technical one: shortly after it begins, a blizzard rises and gradually chips away at your maximum health. Every second spent circling therefore costs you margin. Bring your weapons and armor back to maximum, favor a set built for perfect parrying such as the Bounty Hunter's Armor, and watch out for its disarm attempts.

Before heading back down, check the swords planted next to the circle: they contain the Golden Night and Golden Dawn kits, and nothing on screen prompts you to look for them.

The Spider Lily General: four engraved keys before the ghost

The most talked-about myth in the game starts at the Mysterious Gate, south of the Tokachi Mountains, east of the Yamane Highlands. Ignore Ugetsu's warning: the Abandoned Tominaga Estate greets you with a door with four padlocks, meaning four engraved keys.

  • Labyrinth — to the left, a hanging lantern marks the bamboo grove. Follow the path lined with red flowers all the way to the end: you reappear in front of the training bamboo with one more bamboo stalk. Three passes, then pass the trial — key and spirit gauge increase.
  • Cave — southern caves: follow the trail of corpses, climb up to the lantern, go through the opening in the floor and examine the note in the room with the drawings.
  • Pagoda — a simple chest at the foot of the pagoda. The general appears there and mistakes Atsu for his daughter Yuri.
  • Gravestone — to the right of the estate: confrontation, ladder, wall, then a second group that the mist erases before your eyes. The crate near the shovel contains the key.

General Tominaga opens with the katana, then switches to the kusarigama: the reach changes abruptly and his red double attack is hard to read. The fight is interrupted when his bar is nearly empty; the Spider Lily armor awaits a little further on.

A design detail sheds light on the quest: interviewed by the PlayStation Blog in December 2025, Nate Fox and Jason Connell explain that the spider lilies also serve as waypoints, as early tests showed that the area, being too vast, left players lost in the mist.

The Immortal Samurai: four chimes then an arena

At the Storyteller's Rest, north of Nakagoya Spring, Ugetsu tells the story of a lord who had his castle covered in wind chimes. You must find four of them across the Ishikari Plains; each one points the way to the next.

  • Wind Chime 1 — due north, a few steps from the Storyteller's Rest: a bear sniffs at a corpse, take it down with your bow. The wind chime hangs from a branch.
  • Wind Chime 2 — atop a cliff on the Stone Jaw Coast: use your grappling hook to bring down the hanged man, the wind chime falls lower, climb down using the handholds then the trunk.
  • Wind Chime 3 — Rumoi River, to the northwest, near a lone tree in the middle of the water: a looter is searching the corpse, kill him and search his body.
  • Wind Chime 4 — a little north of Nakagoya Spring, on a corpse atop a rock.

Then head to the Shamisen Training point of interest, on the northwest coast, and take out a wind chime: it points to the rocky outcrop across the way. Grapple down, slide, bamboo bridges, then the arena, where the wind chimes hang from their stands.

The samurai sets his weapon ablaze and chains two distinct series of blue attacks, plus a red-blue-red combo finished off with a kick. Roll the instant you're on fire. At the end of the fight he pulls out a shield, which the kusarigama can shatter. Search the body for the Immortal's Armor; Ugetsu adds 200 coins upon your return.

The Storm Blade: the myth linking Ezo to Tsushima

Head to the Forgotten Shrine, southwest of Oshima Coast. Cut the young bamboo, pray at the fox shrine and let the gray fox guide the crossing. In the abandoned house at the Forgotten Shinobi's Lair, pick up the Deer Helmet near the ladder: the cave can be reached via the roof, then via the top of the waterfall.

The sword is yours for only two seconds: Nine-Tails blind you and steal it. Their leader flees, his two minions remain, shields in hand — kusarigama, again. What follows is a swim across, the First Shinobi's House, then footprints leading to the Storm Warrior's Grave.

The sword thief has a very wide repertoire: blue thrust series or spinning attacks, a red-blue-red combo finished off with a kick, disarms, a flaming blade. Defeating him teaches you the Dance of Wrath, tested immediately on his men: it disarms and heavily wounds two enemies. Don't leave without the Ghost Mask, at the foot of Jin Sakai's grave.

The two duel-free myths: Opusnupuri and the purple kimono

The Legend of Opusnupuri begins at Husko Kotan, in the Nayoro Wilds: sit on the mat to listen to the storyteller, then climb Mount Niptay. The whole quest hinges on one rule you need to grasp quickly — the bear is invulnerable until you have the okikurmi arrow. The tracking phases rely on stealth, and the animal doesn't just see you: it smells you. Crouching behind a rock isn't enough. The arrow is stuck in a trunk amid the mugwort; fire when the reticle turns red, and you'll come away with the True Aim Charm.

The purple kimono requires no duel, but does call for a bit of method. Three orange mother-daughter trees mark the Teshio ridge: Sakuru Woods to the southeast, east of the Hakodake Mountains, then north of the Teshio River. At each tree, examine the carving, follow the red yuki mushi, and read the scroll found on site — the only clue to the next destination. A Nine-Tails ambush awaits at the second one. At the Old House, the last scroll is upstairs: recreate the snow sculpture near the stream, follow the insects to a grave, search the pile of stones.

The order in which to tackle them

Don't tackle them in map order. Start with The Purple Kimono then The Legend of Opusnupuri, which require no duel. Follow up with The Immortal Samurai and The Spider Lily General, where the kusarigama makes the difference against shields. Save The Storm Blade for your pass through the Oshima coast, then launch into Takezo's five duels. The Five Teachings should be tackled last, with weapons and armor maxed out: it's the only confrontation in the game where showing up underequipped means losing before you even start.

With Sucker Punch having confirmed in May 2026 that Ghost of Yōtei Legends would no longer receive major updates, solo play once again becomes the playground of those returning to Ezo this summer. With bounty contracts, the myths are what remains the most substantial — and what pays off the fastest.

Which of these seven mythic quests interests you the most?

Frequently asked questions

Can you really miss these mythic quests?
None of them are permanently missable — everything remains accessible through free exploration after the Six of Yōtei hunt — but they only enter your journal if you find the precise trigger: a storyteller by the roadside, a sealed door, a mat laid on the ground. It's up to you to seek them out.
Why does Takezo's quest get stuck after the fifth disciple?
Because you need the Twin Katanas to conclude it against Takezo himself at the summit. The game doesn't warn you: if you don't have the swords equipped, the fighter will refuse the duel and you'll remain stuck.
How do you trigger the Five Teachings?
Once you've obtained Takezo's five charms, equip them all at the same time and head to the campfire at the summit of Mount Yōtei. Nothing triggers without this specific condition.
Is the General of the Spider Lilies really that complicated to find?
No, the Mysterious Gate in the Tokachi Mountains is easy to spot, but it requires four engraved keys hidden across four areas: a maze with a bamboo trial, a cave with a note, a pagoda with a chest, and a cemetery with a fight. It's a long preamble before the boss.
Do you need all the armors to reach the Platinum?
Yes, the "For Every Occasion" trophy requires every single armor in the game, so you have to go through all seven myths without exception to obtain the complete set of rewards.

Key takeaways

  • Takezo the Peerless requires the Twin Katanas to be concluded, a brutal prerequisite never mentioned by the game.
  • The Five Teachings at the summit of Mount Yōtei only triggers when all five of Takezo's charms are equipped simultaneously, with a blizzard that eats away at your maximum health.
  • The General of the Spider Lilies requires four engraved keys hidden in a maze, a cave, a pagoda and a cemetery before you can face the boss.
  • Together, these seven quests reward three armors, six charms, two OP techniques and two trophies — impossible to skip if you're aiming for the Platinum.
  • General Tominaga's spider lilies aren't just decoration: they serve as waypoints so players don't get lost in the fog.
