Fire Lord Ozai Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game - how to beat him in story mode

In brief

Overpowered Ozai is the toughest boss in Avatar Legends' story mode, but there's a simple method to beat him: ignore light attacks (they bounce off his armor) and focus on heavy hits. With Kyoshi, spam her charged heavy back attack to keep him in permanent stunlock; with Sokka, alternate the neutral heavy attack and charged boomerangs while keeping your distance.

Fire Lord Ozai in his overpowered state is clearly the wall of story mode in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game. Armored, airborne, able to throw fireballs back-to-back and grab you to deal massive damage - he doesn't play by the same rules as the rest of the roster. Good news: there's a simple method to make him fold without pulling your hair out.

When and where you'll face him

Ozai in his overpowered version (flight, projectiles, armor) appears at two specific points in story mode:

  • Chapter 13-1 - "The Titanic Duel": you play as Kyoshi
  • Chapter 21-3 - "Loser Lord": you play as Sokka

In both cases, you have to beat him twice per fight. The main trap: light attacks bounce off his armor without stunning him. If you try to spam light normals on him, you'll waste time and resources for zero result.

Note

The game also lets you play as Ozai in this version at other points. And sure enough, spamming projectiles endlessly is exactly as cheap as it sounds.

The universal rule: heavy attacks bypass the armor

Ozai's armor only blocks light attacks. Heavy attacks (Circle on PlayStation, A on Nintendo Switch) deal normal damage to him and can stun him. That's your only real offensive lever. The rest of the strategy flows from that.

Also keep your distance. Ozai's grab hits hard - if you stay too close, you're going to suffer. Learn the range of his grab and manage the space.

With Kyoshi: the stunlock that shows no mercy

Kyoshi is honestly the most comfortable version of this fight. Her backward heavy attack can be charged to cover a lot of distance while dealing big damage. The result: you can spam this input on a loop, keep Ozai in a permanent stunlock, and empty both his health bars without him really getting the chance to respond.

Kyoshi has other reliable heavy options if you want to mix things up, but honestly, this charged backward attack alone is more than enough. Find the right angle, charge, release, repeat.

With Sokka: more technical, but doable

Sokka is a different story. He doesn't have a heavy attack as dominant as Kyoshi's, so the fight demands a bit more discipline.

The plan:

  • Use his neutral heavy attack (a swing that pushes Ozai back) as your main attack. It deals decent damage and creates distance.
  • When you're far enough from Ozai, throw a charged light boomerang to chip in extra damage.
  • Maintain distance. Always. Ozai's grab really hurts.

What you definitely shouldn't do with Sokka: pull out the Super Duper Slash special move. Ozai will almost always counter it, and this move's damage isn't worth the risk. Stick with the neutral heavy attack - it's less flashy, but a lot safer.

Frequently asked questions

At what point in story mode do you face overpowered Ozai?
You encounter Ozai in his flying, heavily-armed version at two specific moments: Chapter 13-1 "The Titanic Duel" as Kyoshi, and Chapter 21-3 "Loser Lord" as Sokka. In both cases, you must defeat him twice during the same fight.
Why don't my light attacks deal any damage to Ozai?
His armor completely absorbs light attacks without leaving him stunned. This is a major trap if you try to button-mash with normals - you're just wasting your time. Only heavy attacks pierce this defense.
What's the easiest strategy with Kyoshi?
Simply spam her heavy back attack, which you can charge to cover a large distance. This attack creates a permanent stunlock on Ozai and quickly drains both of his health bars without really giving him time to retaliate.
How do you easily beat Ozai with Sokka?
Use his neutral heavy attack (a swing that pushes him back) as your main attack, alternating with light charged boomerangs when you have distance. Always stay far away to avoid his grabs, and above all don't use the Super Duper Slash since Ozai will systematically counter it.

Key takeaways

  • Light attacks don't get through Ozai's armor - only heavy attacks deal normal damage and can stun him.
  • With Kyoshi, the charged heavy back attack creates an almost permanent stunlock that drains both of his health bars without giving him a chance to retaliate.
  • With Sokka, maintain a safe distance by alternating the neutral heavy attack and charged boomerangs - absolutely avoid the Super Duper Slash.
  • Ozai's grab deals massive damage, so spacing management is critical in both fights.
