Final Fantasy XIV: the Alsvid unicorn vanishes on 25 August at 10:59 — the 3 Twitch subs that count, and the 4 conditions that cancel everything

Square Enix closes its Twitch campaign tomorrow morning. The Alsvid mount, a unicorn with a rainbow mane, can only be obtained by buying or gifting three Twitch subscriptions on a channel streaming FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. The official window runs "from Tuesday, 28 July at 11:00 to Tuesday, 25 August 2026 at 10:59 (Paris time)", and the publisher states in black and white that "subscriptions purchased or gifted outside this period will not count".

In other words: a little over twenty-four hours are left, and half of the conditions published by Square Enix are traps. Here is exactly what the official page says, condition by condition.

What you get: a whistle, not the mount

The reward is not the mount itself but "one (1) Alsvid whistle", an item to be used in game to summon the mount. Square Enix describes it as "an exceedingly rare unicorn with a rainbow mane".

An important point for anyone hesitating: the code is not lost if you do not play straight away. The page states that "the item code has no expiry date", the publisher merely reserving the right to set one later with notice. So it is not the code that puts you under pressure, it is the window in which subscriptions must be bought.

The three subscriptions: what counts, what does not

The requirement is to buy or gift "a total of three (3) subscriptions of any tier". On this point, the official FAQ is clear and generous:

• tiers 1, 2 and 3 are all accepted, in any combination;
• the three subscriptions can be bought all at once or one by one;
• they can be spread across several different channels.

Four restrictions, however, rule out a good share of the subscriptions players assume are valid:

• Prime subscriptions do not count. This is stated twice on the page, once in the conditions and once in the FAQ. Your free monthly Prime sub is therefore useless here.
• Anonymously gifted subscriptions do not count. If you are in the habit of gifting with your name hidden, untick the option.
• The channel must be live at the moment of purchase. The FAQ is blunt: "If the streamer is playing a different game during the campaign, gifting a subscription will not count."
• The channel must be a Twitch partner or affiliate and listed under the "FINAL FANTASY XIV Online" category. A channel that is playing the game but has picked the wrong category will earn you nothing.

One last detail that saves money: there is no point buying more than three. "You will only be able to obtain an item code once per Twitch account."

The setting to check before you buy: Twitch notifications

This is what makes players who have actually paid miss out on the reward. The code arrives neither by email nor in game: it lands in your Twitch notifications inbox. Square Enix therefore explicitly asks you to make sure "that Twitch notifications are enabled in your account settings so that you can receive your code".

And there is a genuine expiry date here: "Twitch notifications containing the item code expire after 90 days. Once the notification has expired or been deleted, the code can no longer be retrieved." The code itself is eternal — but if the notification carrying it disappears, it no longer exists as far as you are concerned.

Another thing to plan for if you buy at the last minute: the page warns that you may have to "wait up to 24 hours for your item code to appear in your Twitch notifications". The code can therefore arrive after the campaign has closed: what counts is the time of purchase, not the time of receipt.

Redeeming the code: the three accounts not to confuse

Redemption happens on the FINAL FANTASY XIV: Mog Station, under "Code Registration" then "Enter an item code". Three official details save you an unpleasant surprise:

• a FINAL FANTASY XIV service account must be attached to your Square Enix account;
• the free trial is not enough. You can obtain the code with a trial account, but not use it: a full version is required (Starter Edition, Complete Edition, and so on);
• Square Enix Members accounts are not linked to the game and cannot be used to enter a code.

The reward goes to a single character, chosen at redemption, on the selected service account. The code can only be registered once, will not be replaced if lost, and reselling it is forbidden.

One geographical restriction only

"There are no regional restrictions on taking part in this Twitch campaign", Square Enix writes. The only exception concerns redemption: the rewards "cannot be registered on a Korean or Chinese FINAL FANTASY XIV account". European players are therefore in the clear.

What to do if you have a few hours left

1. Enable notifications on your Twitch account before buying anything.
2. Open the "FINAL FANTASY XIV Online" category on Twitch and pick a channel that is live, partner or affiliate.
3. Buy or gift three paid subscriptions — no Prime, no anonymity — before 10:59, Paris time.
4. Wait for the code in your Twitch notifications, up to 24 hours.
5. Enter it on the Mog Station, choosing the right service account and the right character.
6. Use the Alsvid whistle in game.

After 10:59 tomorrow, the only way out is the one Square Enix leaves ajar in its conditions: "It may be possible to obtain this reward by other means in the future." No date, no details — so nothing to count on.
