In brief

The Frenzied is the go-to Necromancer build for Season 14: it turns Command Skeleton and Cage of Madness into a devastating machine capable of clearing the most demanding endgame content. With insane mobility, a huge area of effect, and remarkable defenses, it's the best choice for anyone who wants to dominate with this class, even though it remains behind in the meta.

Since the release of Lord of Hatred on April 28, 2026, the Necromancer has carried an ambivalent reputation: it's the most spectacular class in the roster, but also the worst off in Season 14, where none of its builds reach the upper tiers of community rankings. There is, however, one exception worth checking out: the Lunatic Warlock, a build built around Command Skeletons and the unique helm Cage of Madness, which both Maxroll and JudgeHype rank at the top of the class for endgame.

The concept is a blast: you summon Fallen Lunatics, those little kamikaze demons inherited from previous Diablo games, and send them into groups of enemies before transforming yourself into a Lunatic to sweep through rooms in a symphony of explosions. JudgeHype compares the feeling to the legendary "Chicken" build of Diablo III's Witch Doctor, and the comparison is well deserved: few Diablo 4 builds offer such movement speed while remaining this tanky.

Now is a good time to jump in. The 3.1.3 update, announced on August 7 and expected the week of the 10th, doesn't touch the build: for the Necromancer, it only fixes a visual bug on the Chain Lightning variant of Dark Prison. As for the Season 15 PTR, open from August 4 to 11, it hints at a significantly buffed class come the new season. Learning the Necromancer now means getting ahead of the curve.

Why the Lunatic Warlock Is the Right Pick in Season 14

Let's be clear: the Necromancer doesn't compete with meta monsters like the Killing Blow Barbarian or the Retaliation Spiritborn. JudgeHype's tier list doesn't place any class build in tier S or A at the high end; the Lunatic Warlock sits at the top of the class's own pack, alongside the Minions and Blight variants. But specialized guides agree: well geared, the build sails through the season's toughest content without breaking a sweat, and Maxroll, which updated its guide on August 4, offers a push-focused variant aimed at tier 120 and beyond.

Its three strengths: a massive area of effect thanks to chain explosions, top-tier mobility once transformed, and remarkable survivability between Wretched Tormentor's taunt, Fortify, and permanent Unstoppable. Its limits: constant buff upkeep and damage that ramps up gradually rather than instantly — a profile suited to speedfarming rather than lightning-fast boss killing.

The Skill Bar and Soul Shards

Five active skills form the backbone of the build, rounded out by a sixth granted by a Soul Shard:

  • Command the Damned (15/15): the main skill, to be cast continuously. The Colossal Maniac variant sends a huge Maniac that splits into three smaller ones — it's the one carrying all the AoE of the build.
  • Miserable Impaled (15/15): taunts enemies, fortifies you and grants damage absorption. To be used on elites and bosses.
  • Sever – Demonic Strike (8/15): the mobility tool, usable very often thanks to Domination's fast regeneration.
  • Seal of Summoning (15/15): extends Miserable Impaled, and its upgrade Summon Hellwyrm allows a double cast of Command the Damned, invaluable against bosses.
  • Metamorphosis (15/15): the ultimate, to be activated only once at the start of a session for its damage bonuses and Domination generation.

On the Soul Shard side, the Legion Shard adds Ae'grom's Command, which summons a small army of demons and sometimes grants a free cast, while the Sacrificial Shard makes you permanently Unstoppable, a defensive luxury few classes can afford.

The rotation: keeping the machine running

  1. Activate Metamorphosis at the start of your run and don't touch it again: staying in demonic form fuels your multipliers.
  2. Recast Ae'grom's Command at least every 20 seconds: this is the condition for keeping the bonuses from the Horazon's Chains item set.
  3. Spam Command the Damned on everything that moves: the base skill costs nothing and generates your resource.
  4. Place Miserable Impaled on elites and bosses, then extend it with Seal of Summoning.
  5. Dodge to trigger the Cage of Madness transformation: you become Unstoppable, pass through enemies, and automatically launch mini Maniacs around you.

Two traps to avoid. First, the Diligence paragon board makes you lose damage when you spend Domination: stay above 50% resource and don't spam Sever or Miserable Impaled until you're drained. Second, staying under Metamorphosis for too long slowly burns you because of Sever, which is considered a Hellfire skill: during long sessions like Helltide Waves, remember to shift back.

The gear: five Mythic Uniques in your sights

Season 14 makes the hunt more accessible: Pandemonium Fragments, earned through seasonal reputation, sublime caches and the seasonal Lair boss, allow you to turn a unique item into a Mythic Unique in the Horadric Cube — unique power increased by 30% and affixes at maximum values. Here is the priority order:

  • Cage of Madness (helm): the centerpiece, which offers a massive multiplier to Command the Damned and unlocks the Maniac transformation.
  • Melted Heart of Selig (weapon) and Horazon's Enigma (amulet): the duo that scales your damage off Maximum Resource, for enormous multipliers at high level.
  • Gloves of the Illuminator: amplify and spread the Colossal Maniac's explosion, turning every pack into a fireworks show.
  • Tibault's Will (pants): counters the resource drain caused by the Melted Heart/Enigma duo, to be paired with a Resource Generation affix.

When tempering, prioritize Physical elemental multipliers on all slots and aim for the Aspect of Galvanized Retreat on the amulet. For masterworking, the weapon comes first, with Maximum Life upgrades to shore up survivability.

Talismans: the full Horazon's Chains set

The talisman system introduced by Lord of Hatred is central here. Equip the Legendary Seal, then the Linta, Fer, Mlor, and Phoba of Horazon's Chains charms, rounded out by Berú of the Anonymous and an optional Rusted Barb — swappable for a Godslayer Crown or a Tibault's Will if you're short on resistances. The set's two-piece bonus scales your damage via Wretched Torment, and the Command of Laalish passive applies Vulnerable permanently, which frees up the slot once reserved for the Aspect of Cursed Touch. On the charms, look for Maximum Resource to feed Horazon's Seed and Melody of Odium. On the rune side, the Cir + Lac and Nagu + Que combinations are the go-to references.

Paragon, glyphs, and mercenaries

The Paragon path runs through five boards: Starting with the Vanguard glyph, Demonic Spikes with Aura of Death, Unfathomable with Demonologist, Possession with Elimination, and Exploit with Preternatural. Level up Demonologist and Vanguard first, as the others will follow naturally.

For mercenaries, bring in Raheir (Valor, Ground Stomp, Raheir's Aegis, Bulwark, Inspire), whose aegis protects a build that spends its time in the thick of packs, and add Aldkin as backup with Weakening Field, triggered as soon as you use a skill in combat.

Ahead of Season 15: the right time to invest

The calendar favors the Berserker. Update 3.1.3 confirms that no nerf is looming over the build, and the Season 15 PTR is testing a rework of mythic uniques — stat retention when using the Horadric Cube or random mythics at the blacksmith — while the specialized press, PC Gamer chief among them, already sees the class as one of the big winners of the upcoming season. Time spent mastering the Necromancer now won't be wasted.

To get started this weekend: first level up your character with a proven leveling build — Apocalypse, Skeletal Warriors, or Corpse Explosion top JudgeHype's tier list for this phase — then switch to the Berserker as soon as Cage of Madness drops. Then focus your Pandemonium Fragments on the helm first, followed by the Melody of Odium and Horazon's Seed duo: that's what will turn an enjoyable build into a Pit-clearing machine.

Are you going to try the Frenzied in Season 14, or would you rather stick with another build?

Frequently asked questions

Is the Frenzied really viable for high-tier pushing in Season 14?
Yes, Maxroll offers a variant dedicated to tier 120 and above. The build doesn't rival the world-top Barbarian or Spiritborn, but it clears the most demanding content without breaking a sweat with good gear.
Should you look for Cage of Madness first, or another unique?
Cage of Madness is the absolute priority: it's the foundation of the build. Without it, you lose the massive multiplier and the suicide-bomber transformation that make the Frenzied what it is.
Why do you need to keep Metamorphosis active at all times?
Staying transformed feeds your damage multipliers. You only recast it once at the start of your run, except during long sessions like Infernal Hordes, where you need to transform again to avoid the gradual drain caused by Ravage.
Is the Necromancer still weak after Season 14?
Season 15's PTR hints at a significantly buffed class. Learning the Necromancer now means getting ahead of the upcoming changes.
What exactly is Ae'grom's Command's role in the rotation?
You need to recast it at least every 20 seconds to keep the Horazon's Bindings aspect bonuses. It's a maintenance skill, not a nuke.

Key takeaways

  • The Frenzied combines massive area of effect and unleashed mobility, without sacrificing defense thanks to Wretched Tortured and permanent Unstoppable.
  • Cage of Madness is the absolute centerpiece: it multiplies Command Skeleton's damage and unlocks the suicide-bomber transformation.
  • The priority order for uniques is strict: Cage of Madness first, then Melted Bell of Odium and Horazon's Seed to stagger your damage.
  • Two traps kill beginners: staying above 50% Overpower to avoid losing your multipliers, and transforming again during long sessions.
  • The Horazon's Bindings aspect set isn't a luxury: it applies Vulnerable permanently and frees up an entire gear slot.
