Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - Tips and Tricks for Beginners

Equip all your characters with Lumina

Pictos are fundamental elements of the combat system that can be equipped by each character, up to a maximum of 3. Each Picto boosts a specified stat while conferring a passive effect that improves combat performance. Using this system from the very start of the adventure will be a major asset against bosses and enemies with aggressive patterns. Once your team members have won several battles, you'll be able to unlock Pictos' passives with Lumina Points, even though the attribute bonus will only be activated for the character equipping that Picto. Distributing these passives across your team will increase your power and help you obtain effective builds to face different types of challenges without becoming totally dependent on a single Picto.

Prioritize techniques that restore AP

Most RPGs offer you a Mana system for magic, but Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's battles revolve around Action Points (AP). Some moves consume AP while others refund it. You'll therefore want to work into your plans techniques that refund AP so you can make use of your own signature moves as often as possible. By combining these AP-generating skills with appropriate Pictos and Lumina, you'll ensure the management of your actions and the opportunities to unleash heavy attacks. Keeping a steady flow of points preserves the momentum of combat and allows for longer, more elaborate combos, capable of annihilating dangerous targets before they have time to retaliate!

Cut loose

Keeping resource scarcity in mind above all, don’t hesitate, during battles in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, to use potions or other items. Hoarding these resources only makes fights more difficult and turns manageable skirmishes into wars of attrition. The checkpoints regularly found on the map guarantee quick recovery and easy restocking, allowing your team to enter every encounter perfectly prepared. Before every real confrontation, boss fight or lengthy skirmish, the game generally offers a save point nearby, restoring all the items that have helped your team survive so far. By systematically using these consumables, the party’s endurance is extended and combat becomes smoother.

Alternate between each character’s moves

Most enemies in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 have an elemental weakness, and exploiting this weakness multiplies the amount of damage dealt. The party must therefore have a wide range of attacks rather than rely on a single favored element. By keeping various attacks on hand, the team can immediately switch strategies and break the enemy’s defense before it can react. At the start of the story, Lune excels at detecting and exploiting weaknesses thanks to her elemental skills, giving the party an early and reliable advantage. As the adventure progresses, almost all companions will have a broader range of offensive options, so balancing elements to cover as many weaknesses as possible during key battles becomes essential.

Use characters with readable mechanics

Beyond their unique skills, every character in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has a personal mechanic that has a significant impact on combat. For instance, there’s Gustave, whose Overcharge allows him to deal very high damage after multi-hit attacks, or Maelle, who has Stances that make her shift between offense and defense. Understanding these mechanics is essential for pairing party members whose systems complement each other, thereby avoiding incompatibilities that waste turns. Some systems, such as Sciel’s or Lune’s, require additional planning and timing, while others work with more forgiving timing. Choosing characters whose flow feels intuitive helps you control battles. Building a composition around familiar mechanics reduces the learning curve, strengthens execution, and cuts down on mistakes that eat into your action points.

Don’t forget to shoot at enemy targets with free aim!

The initial tutorials mention Free Aim, but this mechanic tends to fade into the background as the campaign progresses, even though it’s one of the most formidable tools in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, especially against certain targeted enemies. Aiming at the right spot can deprive opponents of key resources, or interrupt dangerous abilities they would otherwise have unleashed. This can turn tough fights into quick victories.

Some monsters protect themselves with shields or Barriers that significantly reduce the power of hits or damage, but properly landing a hit on a Weak Point with Free Aim will very often reduce this shield to nothing as well. Once the shield has fallen, it can no longer block hits, which then reach the target without issue, causing significant Damage once again, so that in the end, careful Aiming proves most effective while also saving Action Points for later critical Turns.

Mastering Parry Timing

Mastering the correct Timing of Parry windows is essential in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, as it doesn't simply protect but cancels out Damage taken, in addition to directly adding Action Points, and on top of all that, it automatically triggers a Counterattack. Other "defensive" tools exist and are known as jumping or dodging, but for its core quality of rewarding risk-taking proportionally, parrying should become a daily tool to practice whenever possible during your gaming sessions.

Once the timing becomes instinctive, the combat loop becomes much more approachable, although new enemies always follow individual patterns that require observation, patience, and constant adaptation.
