In brief

Aion 2 will launch worldwide on October 5, 2026, with early access on September 30 for Founder's Pack holders. NCsoft's MMORPG runs on a subscription-only model with no free-to-play version, which sets it radically apart from its competitors and raises legitimate questions among Western audiences.

It was the last unknown on the calendar: Aion 2 now has a firm date. NCsoft's MMORPG opens its worldwide servers on October 5, 2026, with early access starting September 30 for holders of the Founder's Packs.

This is a detail that matters. Until now, NC America had stuck to a "September 2026" window announced at the Summer Game Fest, with no exact day — to the point that the Founder's Packs going on sale in July left players to work out the opening date themselves from the five days' head start that had been promised. The math checks out: early access on September 30, general opening on October 5. The launch therefore officially shifts to October, rather than September as the initial communication had suggested.

Free at launch, with an optional subscription

This is the point that divides opinion the most, and it needs to be stated clearly: AION 2's global service will be free. NCSOFT states it plainly in its French announcement of July 22, 2026 — "AION 2 will be free at launch" — and the game's Steam listing is marked as free, with no paid base edition: only three Founder's Packs are offered there. The Quairerk Special Membership, priced at around $15 a month, is an optional subscription that unlocks remote warehouse access, personal trading, the Marketplace, the Luna exchange shop, and an increased Od energy capacity.

In Korea, NCsoft has also moved to merge its various plans into a single subscription combining the options from previous offerings, priced at 25,000 won — roughly 14.25 euros.

The mandatory subscription model described above is the one used for the Korean service, and it doesn't carry over as-is to the West. NCsoft stands by this choice in Korea: the strategy brought in roughly 100 billion won in six weeks after the Korean launch, and the publisher claimed 1.5 million loyal subscribers as of February 2026, with more than 1.5 million daily active players during the launch period.

Whether a Western audience, less accustomed to this model and courted by a glut of free-to-play MMOs, will follow the same trajectory remains to be seen. That's the real unknown of this launch.

What this changes for the Founder's Packs

The three Founder's Packs, on sale since July, grant a five-day head start. With the date now set, that head start runs from September 30 to October 5.

In a subscription-based MMORPG where the gear race starts from hour one, five days isn't a cosmetic detail: it's the gap that will decide who fills the first instanced content groups and who waits in line. For the undecided, the question is therefore no longer "when does the game come out" but "are these five days worth the price of the pack" — and the answer depends largely on your class choice, since tank and healer roles are always the ones that benefit most from a still-sparse population.

Chapter 1, already live in Korea

The Korean and Taiwanese servers, open since November 19, 2025, have built up a considerable lead. NCsoft has rolled out Chapter 1 there, a major update including:

  • New regions and new content.
  • A new class, the Brawler, which arrived in July 2026 — the French specialized press has floated the name "Pugiliste" [Pugilist], which has not been confirmed by NCsoft.
  • A raise to the level cap.
  • An evolution of the monetization model, with the subscription merger mentioned above.

The question Western players are rightly asking: will the worldwide launch start from the current version, Chapter 1 included, or from an earlier build to be caught up later? NCsoft has not clarified this, and has notably not confirmed whether the Brawler will be playable from October 5. This is the most anticipated piece of information ahead of release, and it will shape the class choice of a good portion of future players.

A Korean reception with two sides to it

The picture wouldn't be complete without mentioning the gap between the commercial results and the players' reception. Against the flattering figures claimed by NCsoft, the community reception is noticeably cooler: on JeuxOnLine, the player rating stood at 4.5 out of 10 from 47 reviews — a score described as mediocre.

This dissonance is common in heavily monetized Korean MMOs, where revenue is driven by a highly invested minority while a portion of the playerbase expresses fatigue. It's worth knowing before pre-ordering a Founder's Pack.

What still needs to be confirmed

Two months out from launch, several points remain up in the air:

  • The exact content of the launch version, notably whether or not the Brawler will be included.
  • The final English localization of classes, zones, and items.
  • Whether a trial period will exist, which is absent from current announcements.

See you on September 30 for early access, and on October 5 for the general opening.

What about you, does this subscription-only model with no free version appeal to you or put you off?

Key takeaways

  • Early access on September 30, general launch on October 5, 2026 — the schedule officially shifts into October
  • Mandatory subscription model, around 15 dollars a month, no free version planned so far
  • A five-day head start for Founder's Packs: a gap that's far from cosmetic in an MMO where positioning matters from the very start
  • Chapter 1 has been running in Korea since November 2025 with a new class, the Brawler, but NCsoft has not confirmed its arrival for the Western launch
  • Korean reception shows a dissonance: 1.5 million subscribers claimed in February 2026, yet a 4.5/10 rating on JeuxOnLine from 47 reviews
