Phasmophobia: The Complete 2026 Equipment Guide — The 3 Tool Tiers, What to Buy First, and the Optimal Loadout by Map
In brief
Phasmophobia 2026 revolutionizes progression with three equipment tiers to unlock progressively — a system that demands strategy and prioritization. This guide breaks down the seven essential evidence tools, survival gadgets, the optimal purchase order, and winning loadouts based on your map and difficulty.
Since the massive progression overhaul, Phasmophobia no longer has anything to do with the 2020 game where everyone showed up with the same identical starter kit. In 2026, every tool exists in three versions — Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 — which you have to unlock via your profile level, then buy separately in the shop. The curve is long: going from 100% Tier 1 to 100% Tier 3 costs around $178,000 on the account, not counting the unit price of each item. Suffice it to say you'd better choose the order in which you invest.
This guide takes a complete tour of the equipment available in version 0.18: the seven evidence tools, safety consumables, recording tools, the T1 vs T2 vs T3 comparison, the recommended purchase order, then the optimal loadouts depending on the chosen map and difficulty. Official English names from the Kinetic Games client — the game has been fully translated since the Ascension update.
The seven evidence tools: the absolute essentials
Phasmophobia requires identifying each ghost via three pieces of evidence out of seven possible ones (two in Nightmare, only one in Insanity). Each piece of evidence has a dedicated tool — this is the core of your kit, the one that should be upgraded first.
The EMF Reader detects electromagnetic spikes left by the ghost. The T1 flashes and shows a numbered level you need to check up close; the T2, unlocked at level 20 for a $3,000 upgrade, adds an audio signal and extends the range to about 2 meters; the T3 displays the level (1 to 5) directly on a large digital screen readable from a distance, invaluable when you're fleeing the room.
The Spirit Box lets you communicate with the ghost. T1: 3-meter range, rare and staticky responses. T2 (level 27, $3,000): 4-meter range and improved audio clarity. T3: maximum range, more frequent responses, noticeably higher success rate — on large maps, the difference is brutal.
The Ghost Writing Book attracts the ghost so it scribbles a piece of evidence in it. T1: 3 meters, ~50% success rate per attempt; T2 (level 23, $3,000): 4 meters, 67%; T3 (level 52): 5 meters and 76% success rate. On an average map, the T3 often saves two minutes on a contract.
The Thermometer measures the temperature of the ghost's room. T1: mercury probe, slow reading. T2 (level 20): digital display, fast reading. T3 (level 52): near-instant reading and precision to a tenth of a degree. A real time gain for confirming or ruling out the Freezing Temperatures evidence.
The UV Light reveals fingerprints and footprints on the floor. T1: narrow beam, charges in 5 seconds. T3 (level 56, $2,000): wide cone, charges in 1.5 seconds — you can light up an entire room like a torch, which greatly speeds up checking switches and doors.
The DOTS Projector projects a laser grid revealing the ghost's silhouette. T1: 3-meter cone, fixed beam. T3 ($6,000 upgrade): 7-meter range, oscillating sweep that covers far more blind spots — the most cost-effective item to upgrade to T3, since DOTS readings are noticeably more reliable.
The Video Camera lets you film ghost orbs in night vision. T3 (level 61, $3,000): a filter applied to normal vision rather than a separate night mode, which makes reading orbs much clearer on the truck's monitor.

Tracking and safety tools: staying alive
None of these items yield evidence, but they all extend your investigator's lifespan.
The Crucifix prevents the ghost from starting a hunt within a given radius around it. T1: 3 meters, two charges. T2: 4 meters. T3 (level 80, $20,000 upgrade — the most expensive item in the game): 5 meters and the ability to use both charges to block a cursed hunt. On a medium or large map, taking two T3 Crucifixes completely changes your survival odds.
Salt lets you track the ghost's footprints and, in some cases, force the UV Footprints evidence. T2 and T3 increase the number of piles and the size of the mound — useful but skippable while money is tight.
Smudge Sticks temporarily repel the ghost and cut short an ongoing hunt. T1: burns for 3 seconds. T2: 5 seconds. T3: 6 seconds and a wider area of effect. Combined with the Lighter, Smudge Sticks are your "emergency exit" card when you're stuck without a closet nearby.
Sanity Pills restore 40% sanity (T1), 45% (T2), 50% (T3). Always bring some, especially on large maps where sanity drains within 10 minutes.
The Lighter and the Firelight Torch go together: the Lighter ignites Smudge Sticks and candles, while the Firelight is a long-lasting lantern that stabilizes your sanity. Always upgrade the Firelight to T3 (doubled duration) before tackling large maps.
Recording tools: evidence and bonus objectives
These items earn the bonus money from objectives and are used to film or photograph — essential if you want to maximize your earnings per contract.
The Camera captures objective photos (footprints, corpse, ghost, bone, interaction). T3 (level 70): improved viewfinder and increased photo reward. Always bring four — it offers the best cost-to-earnings ratio in the game.
The Sound Sensor is placed on a wall and displays any sound activity within a given radius on the truck's tablet. The T3 doubles the detection zone, very useful for triangulating the ghost's room in a large building.
The Motion Sensor emits a red laser and alerts you on the map when something crosses it. T3 (level 74): extended angle and range, faster notification.
Head Gear is a bonus slot that doesn't count toward your three standard equipment slots. Each tier adds a function: T1 video camera, T2 built-in flashlight, T3 night vision — the T3 is a game changer on very dark maps where your teammates can see live what you're looking at.
The Parabolic Microphone detects paranormal sounds (footsteps, growls, whispers) from a distance. Tiers increase the antenna's size and thus its range — essential on Nightmare and Insanity to locate the ghost without evidence.
The Tripod stabilizes the Video Camera, Sound Sensor, or Parabolic Microphone. Always bring at least one per medium map, two per large map.

T1 vs T2 vs T3: which tiers to upgrade first
Upgrading everything from T1 to T3 costs about $178,000. Out of the 19 main items, not all offer the same return on investment.
Absolute priority (upgrade as soon as possible): POINTS Projector T3 (tripled range), Writing Book T3 (76% versus 50%), Crucifix T3 (blocks cursed hunts), UV Flashlight T3 (charges in 1.5s), Head Mounted Camera T3 (night vision). These five upgrades unlock qualitatively different capabilities, not just small numerical gains.
High priority: Spirit Box T3, Thermometer T3, Flashlight T3 (doubles duration). Going from T1 → T2 is enough on the EMF Reader and the Writing Book as long as the budget is tight; the real quality leap happens at T3.
Moderate priority: Sound Sensor T3, Motion Sensor T3, Photo Camera T3, Parabolic Microphone T3. Mostly useful at high difficulty and on large maps.
Consumables: Sage and Pills T2 offer very good value for money; T3 only becomes useful in Insanity and Apocalypse.
Optimal loadout by map size
Small maps (6 Tanglewood, 42 Edgefield, 10 Ridgeview, Nell's Diner, Grafton, 13 Willow, Camp Woodwind): the ghost is within 15 meters of the truck. A solo player can bring EMF Reader, Spirit Box, Writing Book, Thermometer, UV Flashlight, POINTS Projector, Video Camera + tripod. A single Crucifix T2 is enough. No need for a Sound Sensor.
Medium maps (Point Hope, Bleasdale, Sunny Meadows Restricted, Prison, Maple Lodge Campsite): sanity drops fast and distances are greater. Add a second Crucifix, a Flashlight T3 per player, two Pills and two Sage per person, and at least a Head Mounted Camera T2. The Parabolic Microphone helps locate the room.
Large maps (Brownstone High School, Sunny Meadows Mental Institution): best tackled as a team. Two to three Crucifix T3, Head Mounted Camera T3 for at least one player, Parabolic Microphone T2/T3, Sound Sensor T3 to triangulate, four Sage T3, and above all plenty of Salt to spot traffic areas. The contract can last 30 minutes, plan sanity accordingly.
Loadout by difficulty
Amateur: comfortable prep time, three evidence given, sanity drops slowly. The starting loadout is enough. Goal: learn to identify each piece of evidence without stress.
Intermediate: faster sanity drain, less setup time. Add Pills and Sage per player, upgrade the EMF Reader and Writing Book to T2.
Professional: three evidence but earlier hunts, more aggressive ghost. Crucifix T2/T3 mandatory, Flashlight per player, double Sage, Spirit Box T2 minimum. This is where the Head Mounted Camera T3's night vision starts to matter.
Nightmare: only two evidence, you must read the ghost's behavior (speed, hunt thresholds, ability). Full T2 kit recommended, Parabolic Microphone and Motion Sensor in the truck to identify the ghost without direct evidence.
Insanity: only one evidence given. The ghost's evidence must be deduced from behavior — T3 equipment recommended across the board, two Crucifix T3, four Sage T3, Pills T3. Always bring a Photo Camera to capitalize on photo money, often the only real source of income when the contract fails.
Apocalypse (Bronze, Silver, Gold): the challenge mode introduced for level 50+ players. Only on Sunny Meadows Mental Institution, solo, with three mandatory bonus objectives. Full T3 expected, two or three Crucifix T3, Head Mounted Camera T3, Parabolic Microphone T3, four Sage T3, eight Pills T3.

The recommended purchase order for a new player
You start with the provided level 1 kit (EMF, journal, flashlight, thermometer, photo camera, old camera, radio, laser pointer). Here is the purchase sequence that gives the most power in the least amount of time:
- Sanity Pills x2 — 60 dollars, considerably increases your margin for error starting at Amateur.
- Sage x2 and Lighter — life insurance for under 100 dollars.
- Spirit Box T1 — essential from your very first Professional contract.
- UV Flashlight T1 — one of the seven evidence types, so you might as well get it right away.
- Writing Book T2 from level 23 (3,000 dollars upgrade) — the reliability gain is well worth it.
- Crucifix T2 — as soon as possible to stop getting hunted repeatedly.
- Head Gear T2 then T3 — night vision is a game changer.
- UV Flashlight T3 — the most cost-effective upgrade for quality of life.
- Crucifix T3 once level 80 is reached — to unlock Insanity and Apocalypse.
Never spend all your money on a single contract: always keep enough to buy back your full kit in case you die. A team of 4 that loses all their equipment on a Sunny Meadows run on Insanity is 15,000 dollars gone in an instant.
Conclusion
That's exactly where Phasmophobia's strength lies in 2026: equipment is no longer just a prerequisite for ticking off evidence, it has become the game's meta-progression. Choosing in what order to upgrade your tiers, knowing which tool brings a real qualitative leap (UV Flashlight T3, Head Gear T3, Crucifix T3) and which one only offers a modest +10% (Writing Book T2), is what separates the investigator who completes their Insanity contracts from the one who walks away empty-handed.
Remember the golden rule: upgrade to T3 anything that fundamentally changes (tripled range, blocked cursed hunt, night vision) before finishing off items that only gain a bit of range. And always keep 5,000 dollars in reserve: in a game where the ghost can wipe out your team in 30 seconds, your emergency fund is your best proof of experience.
