In brief

Paralives gets its 0.1.8 patch, short but significant: a « Classic » camera to enable yourself, menus expanded up to 7 columns in Build Mode, and above all the announcement that patches will now be spaced out in favor of a big free expansion planned for the end of the year.

Paralives received its 0.1.8 patch on Monday, August 24. It's short — three new features, six fixes — and that's precisely the point. The studio states, in black and white, that it's easing off the pace to prioritize optimization and long-term development.

Paralives's patch notes are published in English only: the passages quoted in this article are our translation, not official wording from the French client.

What this means in practical terms for your game: future patches will be more spaced out. Here's what 0.1.8 changes, and what the announcement implies for the coming months.

The "Classic" camera, the real new feature of the patch

This is the addition that will change the most in day-to-day play, and it doesn't activate on its own. Paralives now offers an alternative camera mode, which the studio presents as likely more familiar to some life sim fans — the reference to the competitor is barely veiled.

What the "Classic" camera does, in the studio's exact terms:

  • middle-click to rotate the camera;
  • right-click to pan the view.

It's enabled in the options menu, and nowhere else. If you're coming from another life sim and Paralives's camera has always felt counterintuitive to you, this is the first setting to change before even starting a game.

Seven columns in Build Mode, four in the Paramaker

The second addition is purely ergonomic, but highly requested: menus finally expand on wide screens. The studio announces that the Build Mode and Paramaker menus can now be expanded up to 7 and 4 columns respectively.

In that order, then: 7 columns for Build Mode, 4 for the Paramaker. Given a furniture catalog that keeps growing, seven columns cut by more than half the number of scrolls needed to find an item.

Third and final new feature, the most modest: embarrassment animations have been reworked to convey the emotion with a bit more accuracy.

The six fixes, including two that were unblocking a save

Two entries on the list aren't mere cosmetic annoyances: they fix situations that could get a household permanently stuck.

Households of dead Paras that weren't freeing up the house

This is a regression introduced by 0.1.7, and the studio owns up to it: 0.1.7 had introduced an issue preventing households from leaving their home after all their Paras had died. In practice, a lot remained occupied by an entirely deceased household — therefore unusable, and impossible to reassign. This has been fixed.

Time advancing inside the Paramaker

This one is more surprising. Certain actions allowed time to progress inside the Paramaker, to the point of causing Paras to die while still being created. A Para could therefore die of old age before it even existed. Also fixed.

The other four

  • Paras info tab: information about other Paras wasn't displaying correctly, even though it was actually accessible.
  • Turning on the TV and radio: the studio admits the interaction had stopped working over the last few patches. It now opens the device on a random channel or station again.
  • Sitting children animations: children sitting on a couch now only use the animations that correspond to them.
  • Various visual fixes: leaking mirrors, faulty roof tiles, shops losing their promotional material. The studio sums it up with humor: they had to step in so that everyone would be satisfied with their housing in Melino again.

Optimizations: three specific points, not a vague promise

This is the part that explains the rest of the patch. The studio describes an ongoing effort to reduce stutters and lag, and details the three areas where the code was reworked:

  • loading Parafolk animations;
  • diary generation;
  • fading buildings that block the camera.

All three correspond to moments where Paralives visibly stutters — entering a populated lot, crossing a day milestone, rotating the camera on a built-up street. It's not a performance figure, but it's a precise localization of the problem, which is better than a standalone "various optimizations."

What the announcement really changes: the pace

The most important sentence in these notes isn't in the list of fixes, it's in the introduction:

After 0.1.7, which contained a good number of improvements and bug fixes, we're easing off in order to prioritize optimization and long-term development. As stated in the public roadmap, we're now moving on to the first big update for Paralives! This means patches will be a bit more spaced out than usual, as we work toward the free end-of-year expansion.

(Translated from English.)

Three pieces of information follow from this, and it's better to take them at face value rather than hope for something else:

  1. The studio's goal is now the free end-of-year expansion, announced as bringing new features and content. It's free: it's written in black and white.
  2. The pace of patches is slowing down from now on. A 0.1.9 right on its heels would be a surprise, not the norm.
  3. Hotfixes continue: the studio promises to release them as needed as soon as a major issue is resolved. 0.1.7 received two, 0.1.7b and 0.1.7c, a day apart.

The studio ends with an admission that deserves to be relayed without sugarcoating it: for many reported issues, they're still looking for reliable reproduction steps. In other words, several bugs reported by players are not yet reproducible internally — and therefore won't be fixed in the short term.

What to do after the update

  1. Go to the options and try the "Classic" camera: it's the only addition in the patch that doesn't apply automatically.
  2. Widen the menus to 7 columns in Build Mode and 4 in the Para-sculptor if you're playing on a widescreen display.
  3. Reopen a lot that's been stuck because of a household entirely deceased since 0.1.7: it should be freed up again.
  4. Don't wait for 0.1.9 next week. The studio has warned that the next big milestone is the free end-of-year expansion.

One caveat about the terminology: Paralives has an official but partial French version, and the studio itself acknowledges untranslated strings in its own notes. The name of the "Classic" camera and the term Parafolk are therefore left in English here: there's currently no way to confirm how the French client displays them.

Frequently asked questions

How do you enable the « Classic » camera?
You need to go into the options menu and turn it on manually, unlike the other changes in this patch. It's the first setting to try if you found the default camera counterintuitive.
What are the 7 columns in Build Mode for?
They allow menus to expand on wide screens and cut by more than half the number of scrolls needed to find a piece of furniture in the ever-growing catalog.
When is the next big update coming out?
The studio is aiming for a free expansion by the end of the year. Patches will be spaced out between now and then, with only hotfixes in case of critical bugs.
My lot got stuck because of a dead household after 0.1.7, will this be fixed?
Yes, 0.1.8 fixes this issue. Reopen the lot and it should free up and become usable again.

Key takeaways

  • The « Classic » camera changes the game for anyone who finds Paralives' default camera counterintuitive, but you have to look for it in the options
  • Seven columns in Build Mode cut in half the amount of scrolling needed to find a piece of furniture
  • Two critical bugs are fixed: dead Paras' households that were blocking lots, and time progressing in the Paralife Creator
  • The studio is slowing down its patch pace to focus on the free end-of-year expansion rather than releasing light updates every week
  • Several reported bugs are still not reproducible internally and therefore won't be fixed in the short term
