Panthalus Palworld: how to capture the legendary whale (1.0 guide)

Panthalus is arguably the most impressive legendary Pal added with version 1.0 of Palworld. A colossal whale, an aquatic arena battle, and an entire quest to complete before you even lay eyes on it. This isn't a Pal you stumble upon by chance: you have to earn it. Specifically, you must have defeated the 8 Tower bosses, then meet the Ancient Civilization Researcher on Deserted Islet to trigger the quest chain that leads to the fight.

Unlocking the quest on Deserted Islet

Deserted Islet is located quite far to the north of Windswept Hills, just north of the Twilight Dunes. It's easy to spot: it sits in the middle of the channel, between Ice Wind Island to the left and the ruins at the southern tip of Sunreach to the right.

There you'll find the Ancient Civilization Researcher, who will ask you to recover four bones scattered across the map - this is what officially kicks off the Panthalus quest. Good news: there's no particular prerequisite to reach him. And another welcome bit of flexibility: you can collect the four bones even before talking to him for the first time. The order is entirely up to you, so take advantage of it.

Where to find the four bones

Each bone rests on a giant whale skeleton that gives off a glow clearly visible from a distance - you can't miss them if you fly over the area. Here are their exact locations:

• Bone of the Tide - (124, -524): west of your starting point in Windswept Hills, placed on the skeleton's skull. Fly over it and head west up to the head.
• Bone of Silence - (356, -111): northeast of the Hills, east of Verdant Brook, right next to a level 55 Jormuntide. Fly over the rib cage and look for the item on a low piece of bone at the back. Don't get distracted by the Jormuntide.
• Bone of Foam - (-515, -545): toward the center of Mount Obsidian, right in the volcanic zone. Bring at least Heat Resistance level 2 - the Tropical Outfit or Heat-Resistant Hide Armor will do the job - and leave your Fire-type Pals behind. The item is tucked inside the skull, on the side closest to you, near the lava pools.
• Bone of the Breeze - (-265, 483): north of Sunreach, in an icy biome. Bring at least Cold Resistance level 2. The item glows on top of the skeleton's head, at the bottom of the frozen lake below.

One small detail worth noting: the last two bones (foam and breeze) are found in opposite extreme biomes. If you go in order, plan to swap your gear between the two - or tackle them separately to avoid dying stupidly from hypothermia or burns.

Crafting the Echo Flute

Once you have all four bones, head back to the Ancient Civilization Researcher on Deserted Islet. If this is your very first visit, accept the quest first, then talk to him again right away: he'll hand you the Worn Blueprint. This blueprint gives you access to the recipe for the Echo Flute, which you can craft at any workbench using the four bones you collected.

Once the flute is crafted, bring it back to the Researcher, talk to him, then interact with the glowing symbols engraved on the nearby stone. This is the action that actually unlocks the boss fight against Panthalus. Don't skip this step - many players end up walking away with the flute in hand without thinking to activate the symbols.

How to defeat Panthalus

Like any legendary Pal, Panthalus is fearsome. You only have ten minutes to take it down - the clock is ticking and the whale shows no mercy. Gear up with some serious firepower, a Plasma Cannon or a guided missile launcher at the top of the list, but above all: bring a fast, high-level flying mount that you can ride throughout the entire fight.

This is really the crucial point. The arena is entirely aquatic, except for one small island. As a result, your ground-based Pals get wiped out within seconds. Flying fast and high remains the best way to dodge most of the whale's attacks, which are massive but often predictable if you keep your altitude. Stay mobile. Fire between patterns. Don't touch the water except to reposition.

Once Panthalus's health bar is completely depleted, it collapses, giving you the chance to capture it with a sphere. And this capture is 100% guaranteed. No stress, no legendary sphere wasted - focus entirely on the fight, and the legendary Pal is guaranteed at the end.

Note

Capturing Panthalus isn't just a prestige catch: this boss is also a mandatory step to lift the barrier around the World Tree, the endgame area. In other words, you can't finish Palworld without going through this.
