Palworld: ranged weapons progression, from bow to assault rifle
In brief
Palworld enforces a strict ranged weapon progression: from the Old Bow to the Rocket Launcher, each tier corresponds to a rise in power and increased logistical complexity. Without a reliable ammunition chain and suitable partner Pals, even the most brutal weapon becomes useless — this guide shows you exactly when to switch, what to craft, and how to turn your base into a war factory.
In Palworld, your survival depends as much on your Pals as on how you keep your enemies at a distance. Version 1.0, released on July 11, 2026, has densified the tech tree, and the ranged weapon chain remains the common thread that will take you from the beach to the Syndicate fortresses. This guide is aimed at new players landing on the Palpagos Islands who want to understand, in order, which weapon to craft, at what level, and with which ammo.
We'll follow the official progression: Old Bow, Triple Bow, Crossbow, Old Rifle, Shotgun, Assault Rifle, and finally Rocket Launcher. Each tier represents a leap in power, but also a new logistical dependency: without mass-produced ammo, even the best weapon in the game is just a glorified club.
Why the ranged weapon chain is your backbone
Combat in Palworld almost always favors range. Wild Pals hit hard in melee, hostile humans patrol in groups, and Alpha bosses have towering health bars. Staying mobile while firing means avoiding the combos that can shred you in three seconds.
Two advantages set ranged combat apart from melee. First, each projectile type carries its own elemental bonus, which you can combine with the targeted Pal's weakness. Second, a partner Pal on the ground can play tank and draw aggro while you fire cleanly from a vantage point. This two-part dance makes all the difference.
Tip: before every boss fight, check the Pal's elemental weakness and adjust your arrow or ammo type accordingly. A fire arrow on an ice Pal can double your damage on the ground.
Old Bow and Triple Bow: the early hours (levels 3 and 10)
The Old Bow unlocks as early as level 3, for a mere three tech points. Its recipe only requires wood and plant fiber, making it the perfect weapon for your very first night. DPS remains low, but its range already outclasses all the primitive tools and lets you hunt Cattiva or Lamball without wasting food.
Seven levels later, the Triple Bow (also called the Triple Arrow Bow) radically transforms your efficiency. A single trigger pull sends three projectiles in a tight cone, with a neat trick: only one arrow is consumed per shot. The damage-per-ammo ratio skyrockets, making this bow formidable for capturing low-health Pals without killing them.
Note: the Triple Bow is probably the best capture weapon in the entire first third of the game. Keep it in your inventory even after unlocking the Crossbow.
Crossbow: the bridge between wood and metal (level 13)
The Crossbow appears at level 13 in the tech tree. Its recipe introduces Metal Ingots and Nails, forcing you to build a furnace and a forge. This is a turning point: your base starts to look like a real workshop rather than a campsite.
On the combat side, the crossbow hits harder per shot than bows, but its fire rate is slow and the reload animation leaves you exposed. It's a weapon of patience, perfect for posting your character behind a rock and peppering an isolated Alpha Pal. It uses its own Bolts, crafted at the same workbench.
Old Rifle: your first step into gunpowder (level 21)
You can't tackle firearms without first crafting the Weapon Workbench, unlockable at level 20 for 50 pieces of wood, 15 metal ingots, and 10 nails. Without it, no firearm exists. Once placed in your base, level 21 unlocks the Old Rifle, also known as the Musket Gun.
This is your first real bullet weapon. A single shot per reload, decent accuracy at medium range, and damage that shatters anything the crossbow struggled to bring down. Its recipe requires about 25 metal ingots, 5 high-quality Pal oils, and 30 pieces of wood. Ammo consumption: one Bullet per shot, which you craft yourself using gunpowder and metal.
Tip: before spending your technology points on the musket gun, make sure you have a stable source of sulfur. Without sulfur, there's no gunpowder, and without gunpowder, your rifle is just an expensive piece of wood.
Shotgun and Assault Rifle: the heart of the mid-game (levels 42 and 45)
The next tier takes you straight from single-shot to automatic fire rate. The Shotgun — officially the Pump Gun — unlocks at level 42 and becomes king in close-range combat. Its spread of pellets sweeps through multiple targets at once and wreaks havoc in the corridors of the Syndicate Towers. It's mainly used for point-blank shots on humans or round, slow Pals.
Three levels higher, the Assault Rifle arrives at level 45 for four technology points. This is the turning point of the mid-game: high fire rate, decent damage per bullet, and an effective range of about 40 meters. It consumes standard Gun Powder Bullets, which get eaten up fast when you hold the trigger down. At this stage, you absolutely need to automate ammo production through a chain of dedicated worker Pals (see our guide on the optimal base and worker Pals).
Rocket Launcher: absolute firepower (level 49)
The Rocket Launcher, also listed under the name Rocket Launcher, unlocks at level 49 and represents the top of the “accessible” tier before the ancestral weapons. Each shot costs one Rocket, which requires a lot of refined metal and explosive materials to produce.
Save it for the toughest Alpha bosses and raids on enemy fortresses: the range is decent, but above all the area-of-effect damage radius is enormous. Watch out for self-damage if you fire too close to a wall. Pure DPS remains lower than the assault rifle's on a single target, but the AoE more than makes up for it when multiple targets are grouped together.
Ammunition: the real war economy
None of these weapons are worth anything without a well-oiled ammo pipeline. Here's the logic to keep in mind:
- Standard arrows: crafted at a workbench, a bit of wood and a stone per arrow. Nearly free to produce.
- Poison arrows: add a venomous Pal fluid. Deal a very useful poison DoT against Pals with large health bars.
- Fire arrows: require a flammable material and burn the target over several seconds. Best choice against Ice or Grass type Pals.
- Firearm bullets: made at a weapon workbench; requires gunpowder (sulfur + charcoal) and a metal ingot. One bullet per shot, no status effect.
- Rockets: advanced weapon production chain, very demanding in refined metal and explosive components.
Note: never mix ammo types and weapons. A fire bow doesn't fire standard arrows, and the assault rifle refuses rusty pistol bullets. Mentally tag each weapon with its ammo recipe.
When to switch weapons and which Pal to bring
The golden rule: never fully abandon a lower tier. The Old Bow remains useful for saving bullets early in a session, the Crossbow shines against static targets, and the Shotgun keeps its usefulness indoors even after unlocking the assault rifle.
As for partner Pals, match your companion to your main weapon. A Rushoar or a Direhowl can tank while you shoot with a bow. Past level 21, a Pal capable of generating elemental projectiles (Foxparks for fire, Pengullet for water) multiplies your damage. Finally, around the rocket launcher, a flying Pal positions you for devastating plunging shots.
Tip: name an inventory slot "ammo pack" and always keep 100 standard arrows, 50 bullets, and 5 rockets in reserve. A boss rarely shows up when you're ready.

Key takeaways
- The Triple-Arrow Bow remains the ultimate capture weapon of the early game, even after unlocking the Crossbow.
- The Assault Rifle (level 45) is the true pivot of the mid-game: automatic fire rate, solid range, but a real bullet-guzzler.
- No weapon is worth anything without an automated ammunition pipeline; that's your true backbone, not gunpowder.
- Always match your partner Pal to your weapon: a ground tank for the bow, an elemental generator for rifles, a flying Pal for the Rocket Launcher.
- Never throw away an old weapon; the Crossbow still shines against stationary targets, and the Shotgun excels indoors even in the late game.
