In brief

The Grappling Gun is the essential mobility tool in Palworld, transforming your exploration of Palpagos by making every cliff, every ledge, every hidden area accessible. This guide covers the three available tiers (from the basic Grappling Gun to the Hyper Grappling Gun), their crafting materials, their respective ranges, and above all the techniques that will truly change your gameplay: combat dodging, fall damage cancellation, and vertical kiting against bosses.

In Palworld, vertical mobility completely changes the way you explore the Palpagos archipelago. The Grappling Gun is arguably the tool that most radically transforms your quality of life while playing: scaling a cliff in three seconds, dodging a boss's charge, or retrieving a Pal that fell into a ravine suddenly becomes trivial. Here's a complete guide to unlocking, upgrading, and fully exploiting the three Grappling Hook tiers available in version 1.0.

Why the Grappling Hook is essential from the first ten hours onward

Palpagos is a vertical world. Between the plateaus of the Windswept Hills, the cliffs of the Bay of Blustery Winds, and the ledges of the Islet Sanctuary #1, walking quickly becomes a chore. Without a grappling hook, you climb by hand, burning stamina, falling, dying, and respawning at your bed. With the grappling hook equipped in the third slot of the quick wheel, you save dozens of minutes per session.

The Grappling Hook isn't a weapon, but a traversal tool with infinite ammo: no projectiles to reload, no durability to repair. You pay the price in Ancient Technology Points to unlock it, then you use it without limit for the rest of the playthrough.

Character using the Grappling Gun in Palworld

Tier 1: the Grappling Gun (level 12)

The base version unlocks at level 12 in the purple section of the tech tree, for 1 Ancient Technology Point. You earn these points by completing Syndicate Towers for the first time or by defeating field dungeon bosses. Once the schematic is acquired, crafting is done at a simple Primitive Workbench.

Required materials:

  • 10 Paldium Fragments (blue rocks found on the ground)
  • 10 Ingots (smelted from ore)
  • 30 Fiber (cut from trees or crushed with Cattiva)
  • 1 Ancient Civilization Part (expedition chests, bosses, Anubis)

Its range is modest - expect around fifteen useful meters - and its cooldown sits around 15 seconds. Good enough for climbing most low cliffs and for the occasional dodge, but insufficient in prolonged combat.

Tip: the first Ancient Civilization Part can sometimes be a pain to obtain. Farm the boss Chillet south of the spawn point - it drops one almost every time and is easy to beat with a simple metal spear.

Tier 2: the Mega Grappling Gun (level 17)

As soon as you approach level 17, get ready to upgrade. The Mega Grappling Gun unlocks at this tier for 2 Ancient Technology Points and is crafted at a Weapon Workbench.

Required materials:

  • 20 Paldium Fragments
  • 20 Ingots
  • 50 Fiber
  • 4 Ancient Civilization Parts

The improvement is significant: range increases to about 22 meters, the grapple speed is faster, and above all the cooldown drops to around 10 seconds. This is the version most players stick with until the end of the game, lacking the motivation to climb to the higher tiers.

Note: the Mega Grappling Gun doesn't replace the first one in your inventory - it's a separate item. Remember to discard the old one to avoid confusion in the quick wheel.

Tier 3: Giga and Hyper Grappling Gun (levels 32 and 47)

The Giga Grappling Gun arrives at level 32, with a range of about 30 meters and a cooldown reduced to 7 seconds. It already requires a few Refined Ingots, which implies you'll need to have leveled up your base and unlocked the Improved Furnace.

The top of the range is the Hyper Grappling Gun, unlocked at level 47 (Epic rarity) and crafted exclusively at the Production Assembly Line II or the Ancient Workbench.

Hyper materials:

  • 40 Paldium Fragments
  • 30 Refined Ingots
  • 20 Carbon Fiber
  • 20 Polymer
  • 7 Ancient Civilization Parts

Polymer is the main bottleneck: its recipe unlocks at level 33 and requires a Production Assembly Line powered by a Power Generator, plus two units of Quality Pal Oil per unit. It's an end-game investment that offers a range of about 40 meters and an almost nonexistent cooldown of 5 seconds.

Tip: save the Hyper Grappling Gun for exploring Island Sanctuaries and farming rare Pals (Jetragon, Frostallion). On flat maps like the Frozen Tundra, a Mega is more than enough.

Combat uses: kiting, dodging, and repositioning

The Grappling Gun is a major defensive tool against open-world bosses and Syndicate Tower guards. Three techniques to work into your playstyle:

  • Lateral dodge: aim at a tree or rock to the side to escape a frontal charge. Works perfectly against Mammorest or Anubis.
  • Vertical kiting: climb onto a platform the enemy can't reach, shoot with a firearm, then come back down with a glider-type Pal like Nitewing.
  • Offensive repositioning: fire the grapple toward a flying boss to stay within range of automatic weapons and interrupt its casting animation.

Careful: the grappling gun doesn't stop you from taking attack damage while in flight. You remain vulnerable to projectiles while being pulled.

Farming, exploration, and difficult areas

The best spots for Refined Paldium, Sulfur, and Coal are perched on ledges. Without a grappling gun, you'd need to build ramps or risk a deadly fall. With it, you can reach Windswept Hills in one minute instead of ten.

Note: for the Lifmunk Effigies hidden up high, alternate between grappling and the double jump of a mounted Direhowl: the combination covers almost every ledge in the game.

Interactions with flying Pals and mounts

The grappling gun works while flying. While riding Nitewing, Beakon, or Jetragon, you can fire the hook toward an anchor point for a tight U-turn or to slow down a descent. It's also the fastest way to catch a Pal that's been thrown off a mount.

Since version 1.0, it's possible to grapple during a gliding slide (Pals like Celaray), which opens up trajectories that are impossible on foot.

Canceling fall damage: the key technique

The grappling hook's most profitable trick, across all tiers: cancelling fall damage. The method is simple but takes a bit of practice.

  • Jump off a cliff less than 40 meters high.
  • In the last second of the fall, fire the grappling hook at the ground or a side wall.
  • The pulling animation resets your vertical speed to zero: you hit the ground without losing a single HP.
Tip: for very long falls, chain a sideways grapple followed by a second one toward the ground as soon as the cooldown is ready. A Mega Grappling Gun is perfect for this, its short recharge gives you enough time to pull twice during the same fall.

To go further on Palworld

Which Grappling Gun tier do you use most often?

Frequently asked questions

Which Grappling Gun tier should you keep until the end of the game?
Most players keep the Mega Grappling Gun (level 17) until the end, as it offers an excellent balance between crafting cost and performance. The Hyper only really becomes relevant for specific endgame content like exploring the hardest Insular Sanctuaries.
How do you cancel fall damage with the Grappling Gun?
Jump off a cliff, then in the last second before impact, fire the grappling hook at the ground or a nearby wall. The pulling animation resets your vertical speed to zero and saves all your HP. For very long falls, chain two grapples together as soon as the cooldown allows.
Where can you farm Ancient Civilization Fragments?
The Chillet boss south of the spawn point drops them almost every time and is easily defeated with a simple metal spear. Expedition chests and other world bosses also produce them, but Chillet remains the most reliable option for unlocking your first Grappling Gun.
Does the Grappling Gun work while riding a flying Pal?
Yes, and it's extremely powerful: you can fire the hook from the back of Nitewing, Beakon, or Jetragon to pull off tight turns, slow down a descent, or catch a Pal that's been knocked off. It's also possible during glide since version 1.0.
Can the Grappling Gun save you during a boss fight?
Yes, as a defensive tool: dodge laterally by aiming at a tree or rock to the side to get out of a charge, or kite vertically by climbing onto an unreachable platform. However, you remain vulnerable to projectiles during the pull, so it's not a miracle dodge.

Key takeaways

  • The Tier 1 Grappling Gun unlocks at level 12 for just 1 Ancient Technology Point and is enough to get started, but the Mega (level 17) quickly becomes essential with its doubled range and reduced cooldown.
  • Fall damage cancellation is the real game-changer: fire the grappling hook in the last second of your fall to negate all HP loss, no matter the height if you chain two pulls together.
  • In combat, the grappling hook is mainly used for lateral dodging and vertical kiting, not direct attacks: position yourself out of range, fire, then reposition yourself.
  • The Hyper Grappling Gun (level 47, 40 meters range, 5-second cooldown) is a late-game investment that's only justified for exploring Insular Sanctuaries, as the Mega is enough everywhere else.
  • Farm the Chillet boss south of spawn to easily get your first Ancient Civilization Fragment without heavy gear.
