The New Face of the Duelist Meta in Season 9

Marvel Rivals Season 9 has shaken up the Duelist rankings. A new Team-Up system, the return of passive regeneration, a massive damage rebalance, and the arrival of Jubilee: the July 2026 meta barely resembles what we had in spring. At playnews.gg, we compiled trends from Diamond+ ladders, NetEase's official patch notes, and feedback from French-speaking creators (Breakflip, Millenium, jvfr) to bring you the real top 5 DPS to play in ranked this summer.

The Team-Up overhaul is the true game-changer of Season 9. Every hero now has two interchangeable duo abilities at spawn, and it's no longer necessary to have the partner on the team to unlock the base effect: the partner's presence now only amplifies it. Direct consequence: the most flexible Duelists, those with at least one viable solo Team-Up, have shot up the rankings. The return of out-of-combat HP regeneration also benefits dive profiles, who can reset their health bar between engagements without monopolizing a Strategist. That's exactly why Magik, Spider-Man, and Black Panther have become comfortable picks again. Finally, several historically shaky Duelists like Winter Soldier and Hela received direct buffs to their base damage, propelling them up the chart. A quick note on methodology: the ranking below takes into account win rate in Diamond+, ban rate in ranked, and pick flexibility against the three dominant compositions (controlled dive, sniper comp, and double-Vanguard brawl). Heroes that overperform in a single scenario but are easy to counter were not included.

#1 Hela — the Queen of Safe Damage

This is THE winner of patch 20260710. Hela's Nightsword base damage goes from 70 to 80, damage falloff now extends to 35 m instead of 30, and above all her Raven form now allows free flight in all directions. This is the best mid-to-long-range DPS in the game right now.

• Strengths: high instant damage, comfortable range, self-resurrection ultimate with Loki/Thor, regained mobility.
• Weaknesses: practically immobile in ground combat, vulnerable to dive (Magik, Winter Soldier) without peel.
• Ultimate combo: Goddess of Death combined with Luna Snow's Winter Symphony: the freeze lets you headshot the entire enemy team without them being able to retaliate.
• Best partners: Thor and Loki as Vanguard/Duelist for the new "Undying Monster" Team-Up, Luna Snow and Mantis as Strategist to extend her firing window.

#2 Magik — the Ultimate Diver

Nerfed on paper (base HP reduced from 250 to 150), Magik actually gains a regenerative shield of 125 HP that puts her higher than before (275 effective HP) and, more importantly, makes her independent from the healbot. Her portals remain the best engagement window in the game, and her ability to clean up a backline is worth its weight in gold against double-Strategist compositions.

• Strengths: vertical mobility, monstrous close-range burst, increased sustain, natural counter to Storm and Iron Man.
• Weaknesses: low ranged damage, punished by CC (Thing, Namor) and by a good Rocket Raccoon.
• Ultimate combo: Demonic Illusion launched after the Cloak and Dagger Shield to guarantee the kill window on the backline.
• Best partners: Doctor Strange (portal Team-Up), Cloak and Dagger for dive survivability, Peni Parker to lock down the point after the pick.

#3 Psylocke — the invisible blade

Psylocke takes a jump in the meta: her Psionic Crossbow goes from 12 to 13 damage per shot (14 with Cloak and Dagger active), she gains 100 HP of regenerative shield, and the HP bonus with Emma Frost climbs from 10 to 15 per planted shuriken. In practice, she can now hold an extended duel against another Duelist while dive-farming supports.

• Strengths: active invisibility, excellent mobility, damage spikes at all ranges, easy snowball on isolated supports.
• Weaknesses: very dependent on her dash cooldown, punished by Hawkeye's vision and by a good Loki.
• Ultimate combo: Shadow Ballet right after Emma Frost's Smile to maximize the multiplier and remove two DPS in one pass.
• Best partners: Emma Frost (amplified Team-Up), Cloak and Dagger for bonus damage, Groot to lock down a lane before the dive.

#4 Winter Soldier (Bucky) — the versatile finisher

Bucky is the quiet winner of Season 9. His two Team-Up Loadouts are centered on control: the Electric Volley passes through allies, sends knockback, and applies a Grounded effect when paired with Punisher. The second loadout, Expert Instinct with Elsa Bloodstone, increases his fire rate and ammo regeneration after a pick. Result: one of the few Duelists capable of finishing off a target at 30%, regardless of their escape angle.

• Strengths: unstoppable execution, two dashes to reposition, ultimate that resets on kill.
• Weaknesses: weapon with heavy recoil, must engage with cooldowns ready.
• Ultimate combo: Kraken's Embrace chained with Punisher's Mark: two guaranteed executions if Punisher rarely misses.
• Best partners: Punisher (shock Team-Up), Elsa Bloodstone (fire rate upgrade), Adam Warlock to reset a lost team fight.

#5 Hawkeye — the lethal sniper

Hawkeye is the oppressive pick of the moment. His charged-bow one-shot remains unchanged, but his Team-Up with Cloak and Dagger now fires a second blinding arrow that passes through allies to heal them and damages enemies. The archer's vision, combined with Season 9 rewarding flank control, makes him a must-pick in Diamond+ compositions.

• Strengths: one-shot on 250 HP targets, healing utility via Team-Up, ultimate that reveals enemy positions.
• Weaknesses: very vulnerable to dive, demanding aim, little impact on tanky Vanguards.
• Ultimate combo: Eye of the Panther chained with Luna's Symphony: frozen targets get one-shot systematically.
• Best partners: Cloak and Dagger (amplified Team-Up), Luna Snow for the freeze/shot combo, Black Panther to create blind angles.

The rest of the roster: what's still worth it

Several heroes remain viable without breaking into the top 5, and some even stand out on specific maps or compositions:

• Storm: back to being solid thanks to her aerial buffs, ideal on open maps like Yggsgard and Klyntar.
• Iron Man: aerial pressure still works against ground-based compositions, but he struggles against the newer, faster dive comps.
• Scarlet Witch: her ultimate is still devastating, but her auto-fire mechanic remains easy to counter with Loki or Hawkeye.
• Wolverine, Ultron, and Iron Fist: decent dive profiles, but clearly a step behind Magik.
• Namor, Mister Fantastic, Star-Lord, Human Torch: viable as flex picks but often outclassed by the top 5.
• Squirrel Girl, Moon Knight, Punisher: siege specialists, punished as soon as a dive composition takes control.
• Black Widow: completely reworked in Season 9, still unstable in ranked but one to watch in Season 9.5.
• Spider-Man: the return of passive regeneration gives him real picking potential against poorly peeled backlines.

Keep in mind three archetypes dominating the ladder in July 2026:

• Controlled dive: Magik + Bucky, with Thing/Venom as Vanguard and Cloak & Dagger + Adam Warlock as support.
• Sniper composition: Hela + Hawkeye, with Doctor Strange + Peni Parker up front, Luna Snow + Mantis behind.
• Assassin flank: Psylocke + Black Panther, with Groot + Thing to lock things down and Rocket + Cloak & Dagger for survivability.

The key in Season 9 is to choose your Team-Up before each round based on the opposing composition. A Bucky with the Punisher loadout doesn't have the same identity as a Bucky with Elsa Bloodstone: the former aims for control, the latter for execution. Get into the habit of switching depending on the tanks you're facing.
