In brief

Thebes, Marvel Rivals' newest Convoy map, forces a vertical reading and three staggered chokepoints where patch 9.5 completely reshuffles the deck. Peni Parker loses her automatic lockdown, Doctor Strange and Moon Knight rise in power, and winning compositions need to adapt their timing depending on whether you're forcing the initial funnel, controlling the pyramid's heights, or defending the temple gate.

Rolled out on July 23, 2026 right in the middle of Season 9 "The Mystery of Thebes," Thebes is Marvel Rivals' most recent map, and arguably the one players know least well. This Convoy-type map stretches a corridor of sand between two monuments: Apocalypse's pyramid on one side, the Temple of Khonshu on the other. Attackers escort the Faith-Harvesting Engine — the machine that siphoned the lunar god's faith — to the doors of his temple, with two checkpoints before the finish line. Defenders, meanwhile, have three well-designed chokepoints to shut everything down.

If you already played it back in July, give it another look with fresh eyes: patch 9.5, released on August 7, directly affects its signature picks. Peni Parker, a pillar of chokepoint defenses, loses the direct immobilization on her Cyber-Web Snare; Doctor Strange gains extra ammo; and Moon Knight — literally at home in Thebes — gets buffed ricochets, exactly the kind of damage profile that shines in the pyramid's corridors.

Here's how to approach each segment of the map, both on attack and defense, with the heroes who benefit most from the post-9.5 meta.

Thebes at a glance

  • Mode: Convoy (escort) — attackers push the Faith-Harvesting Engine toward the Temple of Khonshu.
  • Release: July 23, 2026, patch 20260723, deployed without downtime.
  • Setting: dunes, oases, and ruins of ancient Thebes blended with celestial technology, from Ozymandias's ceremonial halls to the trap-laden funerary corridors of the pyramid.
  • Context: a weakened Khonshu seeks to reclaim his stolen faith, and Moon Knight demands answers from his god in front of the machine that stripped him of it.
  • Signature trait: unusual verticality for a Convoy map — elevated positions, windows, and flank routes are more numerous here than on most of the game's escort maps.

Zone 1: the entrance to Apocalypse's pyramid

The start is deceptive. The first stretch plays out in open air, between dunes and oasis, with long sightlines that favor ranged poke. Then everything closes in suddenly at the pyramid's entrance: a tight funnel where the game's first real fight is decided at close range.

On attack, the worst mistake is pushing the convoy into the funnel before winning the fight. Take space first: side angles let you attack the door from two axes instead of stacking on the central axis, where an organized defense piles up its area damage. A melee Vanguard who creates space — Emma Frost or The Thing — forces the door far better than a static shield, and Wolverine, whose Rage now builds faster since 9.5 (8 points per hit taken instead of 5), thrives precisely in this kind of tight brawl against tanks bunched up in a doorway.

On defense, hold the door, not the dune. Advancing into the open zone exposes your Strategists to snipers and dive attacks, with no terrain to fall back on. A good defense sets up at the chokepoint, with area control in front of the door and healing under cover behind it. This is where Peni Parker used to reign before the patch — more on that below, since her role has changed.

Zone 2: inside the pyramid

Past the first checkpoint, the convoy pushes deeper into the pyramid, and the map's nature shifts: this is Thebes' most vertical section. Aerial routes multiply, overlooks dominate the convoy's path, and a slide on the defenders' side — paired with healing packs — allows for a quick return to the fight after falling back.

On attack, this is the segment for flying heroes and flankers. Iron Man, Ultron, or Human Torch exploit the heights to pepper the defense, which must in turn stay within range of the convoy. Psylocke or Black Widow take the side routes to threaten the enemy Strategists while the convoy advances. Since 9.5, Phoenix (Sparks detonation damage raised from 35 to 40) and Cyclops (Ricochet Force recharging faster) make this poke from the heights even more rewarding.

On defense, the rule is simple: whoever gives up the high ground loses the low ground. Leave the elevated positions to the attackers and every meter of the convoy will be paid for at a steep price. Keep at least one hero capable of contesting the skies, and use the slide and its health packs to hold the zone on a short cycle rather than heading back to spawn after every lost engagement.

Zone 3: the gate to the Temple of Khonshu

The final segment closes in on the narrowest area of the entire map: a straight opening right in front of the temple, where twelve players squeeze into just a few meters. No more decisive flanks, no more height duels: this is pure zone combat, where AoE damage, crowd control, and above all ultimates make the difference.

On attack as much as on defense, managing ultimates matters more than anything else. Arriving in front of the temple without an engage or a rescue ultimate means handing over the round. Moon Knight's ricochets — buffed by the patch — are devastating there, and Devil Dinosaur's percentage-based health damage (first bite series raised from 5% to 8% of max HP) punishes tank stacking in the opening. On the defense side, a Doctor Strange in front of the gate, with his Daggers of Denak now at 12 charges and 18 damage, can hold the lane almost single-handedly between two ultimates.

What patch 9.5 changes on Thebes

Peni Parker is no longer an automatic wall

This is the change that weighs most heavily on this map. Peni's Cyber-Web Snare no longer immobilizes directly: it now applies a Web-Tracer marker and a 30% slow for one second, and only a second shot on an already marked target immobilizes for 0.7 seconds. The ability now works on a charge system (two at most), and the bonus HP cap of her webs drops from 200 to 150. Peni remains relevant for mining the zone 1 chokepoint or the temple gate, but she no longer locks down a lane by herself: enemy divers finally have a window to get through.

Doctor Strange and Rogue, the winning Vanguards

Strange gains more Daggers of Denak (12 charges) and stronger ones (18 damage per hit): in Thebes' gate fights, where he can spam into a compact mass, the payoff is immediate. Rogue takes hits better (damage reduction in defensive stance raised to 60%, regenerating shield at 275) and establishes herself as a reliable frontline in the pyramid's corridors.

Moon Knight, the thematic pick turned serious pick

Defending the Temple of Khonshu with his avatar is no longer just a nod to the season's story. The damage loss on his bouncing projectiles drops from 30% to 20%, and Thebes' enclosed spaces — nearby walls, low ceilings, grouped-up targets — are the best ricochet terrain in the game. His extended dash (15 meters) also lets him reposition between the overlooks of zone 2.

Venom eases off a bit

The symbiote remains the map's natural diver thanks to the verticality, but his Venom Swing's cooldown goes from 8 to 10 seconds and his Symbiotic Resilience bonus health drops from 120% to 110% of lost HP. In practice: dives onto defending Strategists in zone 2 remain viable, but every failed engagement costs more. Hela, meanwhile, remains a safe bet at medium range — her only nerf in 9.5 concerns the Team-Up with Namor.

Three compositions that work

SituationCompositionGuiding idea
Attack, forcing the gatesEmma Frost, Doctor Strange, Hela, The Punisher, Luna Snow, MantisTwo Vanguards to win the choke point, sustained damage along the lane, stable healing behind the payload.
Attack, vertical zone 2Venom, Hulk, Psylocke, Jubilee, Cloak & Dagger, Luna SnowSimultaneous dive on the Strategists while the payload advances; the high ground neutralizes the static defense.
Anti-dive defensePeni Parker, The Thing, Namor, Winter Soldier, Rocket Raccoon, White FoxZone the space around the payload and punish every isolated engagement — Peni mines, Namor and his turrets cover the blind spots.

The three-decision plan

Thebes comes down to three well-made choices. One: the opening fight is won before the choke point — take the angles, not the lane. Two: in the pyramid, the side that controls the high ground controls the tempo; never let an Iron Man or a Phoenix pepper you without a response. Three: keep at least two ultimates for the temple gate, because that's where almost every close match is decided. And if you're looking for a hero to work on this week, Moon Knight on his own map, patch 9.5 version, is probably the most profitable investment right now.

On Thebes, which segment gives you the most trouble on attack?

Frequently asked questions

Why is the first zone won through the side angles instead of the central axis?
Stacking up in the funnel against an organized defense concentrates all their area damage on you. Attacking the gate from the flanks splits the engagement axes and forces the defense to spread out, eliminating its positional advantage.
How did Peni Parker change after patch 9.5?
Her Cyber-Web Snare no longer immobilizes on the first shot: she must first mark with a Web-Tracer (30% slow), then fire a second shot to immobilize for 0.7 seconds. She's still viable for mining chokepoints, but can no longer lock down a corridor on her own.
Which hero benefits the most from ricochets at the temple gate?
Moon Knight, whose damage loss per bounce drops from 30% to 20%. Thebes' enclosed spaces — close walls, low ceilings, tight groupings — are the best playground for exploiting his buffed ricochets.
Do you really need two Vanguards to force the initial funnel?
Yes. A single one lets the defense focus it down and block the convoy. Two Vanguards — Emma Frost and Doctor Strange, for example — create too many simultaneous threats to be locked down, forcing the defense to split up and open the convoy's path.
Why does zone 2 favor flying and vertical heroes?
It's the map's most elevated segment, with aerial routes, overlooks, and a defensive slide. Flyers (Iron Man, Ultron, Human Torch) can bombard safely from above, while a defense that doesn't contest the heights loses every meter of the convoy.

Key takeaways

  • The pyramid's entry funnel is won through lateral melee pushes, never by stacking up on the central axis.
  • The indoor zone 2 is won in the air: whoever gives up the overlooks loses control of the convoy.
  • Peni Parker no longer directly immobilizes since 9.5 — she now slows and marks, finally opening windows for divers.
  • Moon Knight becomes a serious pick thanks to buffed ricochets, ideal for Thebes' enclosed spaces.
  • Doctor Strange and his buffed Daggers can almost single-handedly lock down the temple gate between ultimates.
