What exactly is The Grand Eggspress?

Egg Hunt 2026: The Grand Eggspress is a narrative 3D platformer, playable solo or in multiplayer, billed as the spiritual successor to Egg Hunt 2018: The Great Yolktales, one of the most beloved event games in Roblox history. Unlike the official egg hunts organized by Roblox from 2008 to 2020, this one is a community production: it's led by Studio Koi Koi and the Koiverse team, headed by developer Quenty, with contributions from around a hundred UGC creators and about twenty developers.

The project was funded on Kickstarter between December 2025 and January 2026: the $75,000 goal was reached in two days, and the campaign ultimately closed above $125,000 from 634 backers — the largest crowdfunding total ever raised for a Roblox game. Story-wise, you board the Grand Eggspress, a train that travels across the "Eggverse" in pursuit of fragments of the Century Egg, an egg-comet whose discovery kicks off the adventure.

What's free as of August 8, 2026

Since the July 29 launch, the introduction (chapter 0, Comet Point) and chapter 1 (Florentine Forest) have been accessible to everyone at no cost. On August 5, Studio Koi Koi added chapter 2 (Songhua Station) to this free demo. In total, that amounts to about four hours of gameplay and roughly a third of the content, enough to get a very clear picture before pulling out your credit card.

This free portion covers three distinct settings: the opening celebration and the discovery of the comet at Comet Point, a mushroom forest threatened by brambles at Florentine Forest, and then a mountain station where an avalanche has trapped researchers and villagers at Songhua Station.

The seven chapters of the journey

The full adventure spans seven chapters, from the prologue to the end. Here's the state of things as of August 8, 2026:

Chapters 3 and 4 have been available since launch for buyers: Crêpey Castle sends you to a mysterious castle around which residents disappear one by one, while Meringue Oasis explores a desert and its buried ruins. The last two chapters, Sunnyside (a floating city) and Pavlava Ruins (a tower above lava, serving as the finale), are still marked "coming soon" on Studio Koi Koi's official website, with no date announced. They will release during the event — one more reason not to wait until the last week to jump in.

How much does the full game cost?

Access to the entire adventure costs $29.99, or 6,767 Robux, as a one-time purchase — there's no subscription. Chapters 3 through 6 can also be bought individually for 2,000 Robux each. Do the math before caving in chapter by chapter: the four paid chapters bought separately add up to 8,000 Robux, significantly more expensive than the full pack.

Studio Koi Koi states that the profits will fund future egg hunt events. This is an unusual model on Roblox, where big games are free and monetized through microtransactions — and that's exactly what's sparking debate, more on that below.

Eggs, badges, and UGC items

The heart of the game stays true to tradition: every world hides unique eggs, and there are more than a hundred across the whole adventure, each designed by a UGC creator from the community. Florentine Forest alone, the first free chapter, has 17. Don't expect to just pick them up off the ground: most have to be earned by solving puzzles or completing platforming sequences tied to each world's story.

Each egg found unlocks a Roblox badge, letting you track your progress. As for avatar rewards, the system works differently from historical Egg Hunts: the items tied to the event are UGC creations that belong to their creators and are sold in-game, with a few promotional items also being handed out by the developers. In 2018, eggs turned directly into free avatar accessories; that's no longer how it works here.

• Start with the free demo. Three chapters and four hours of gameplay are more than enough to know whether the style — demanding platforming, storybook tone, humor — is for you.

The issue isn't so much the game's quality — the sets, music, and art direction are widely praised — but its price: part of the community won't accept that an Egg Hunt, an event that has historically been free, is becoming a $30 game, and some players admit to leaving negative reviews without having bought the game.

The project's defenders, for their part, point out that Roblox hasn't held an official Egg Hunt since 2020, that this version is entirely community-funded, and that its revenue is meant to make it possible to produce more.
