In brief

Chapter 41 Chorus of Sin arrives on the PTB on August 4 and officially launches on August 25: it's the first chapter entirely designed through community voting via The Grimoire. The Judgment, a slow but devastating killer, introduces the game's first survivor teleportation by banishing them to the Heresy, while Aurora Stardotter completes this post-apocalyptic duo with a team-support kit built around generators.

Behaviour Interactive opened the Public Test Build of Chapter 41 on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, and this is not a chapter like any other. Chorus of Sin is the first chapter in Dead by Daylight's history entirely designed by the community, the culmination of the survey program The Grimoire launched by the studio to let players vote on the identity, lore, and mechanics of a killer/survivor duo.

The result stands out in a roster fueled by horror licenses: no masked slasher or xenomorph this time, but a divine entity that punishes heresy, and a survivor who escaped the world that this entity wiped off the map. The official release is set for August 25, 2026. Until then, the PTB is the only window to get ahead of the curve — and to understand just how much this killer breaks a nine-year-old rule.

Important note: all the labels below are those from the English-language PTB. Behaviour only publishes its French translations at the time of the live patch, and PTB numbers almost always change before release. We are therefore keeping the official English names and flagging every balance change that could still evolve.

The Grimoire: why this chapter only exists because of the players

The Grimoire is a recurring survey system that Behaviour launched to have an original chapter designed by its community. Players voted at every stage: overall tone, source lore, killer archetype, survivor silhouette, art direction, then the broad strokes of the power. Chorus of Sin is the finished product of this chain of votes.

A direct and rarely highlighted consequence: this chapter brings no new map. Original Dead by Daylight chapters almost always arrive with a brand-new realm; here, the content is focused entirely on the character duo and on a field mechanic that is, itself, genuinely unprecedented.

The Judgment: the technical profile

The Judgment plays like a ranged control killer, not a corridor hunter. Its base stats make that clear right away:

  • Movement speed: 110%, or 4.4 m/s. This is the category of slow killers, the one shared with the Nurse, the Cenobite, or the Huntress — the game always compensates for this slowness with a ranged power.
  • Terror radius: 32 meters, the standard value.
  • Height: tall. Survivors can spot them above low walls and pallets, which exposes them more to loop play than a shorter killer.

A 110% killer with a standard terror radius and a tall silhouette is the typical profile of a killer who needs to win their chases before they even start. Everything therefore hinges on their power.

Will of the Gods and Divine Light: how the power works

The power is called Will of the Gods and manifests as a channeled attack, the Divine Light. It functions as a charge-and-hold beam: you press and hold the power button to begin the incantation, and release it to interrupt it. Once the power has been used, there is a 6-second cooldown before it can be activated again.

This "hold/release" format has a clear tactical implication: unlike a thrown hatchet, you keep control over the exposure duration. Against a survivor zigzagging behind obstacles, you cut it short to avoid wasting the window; against a survivor out in the open, you push the channeling to the maximum.

Heresy: the true heart of the kit

The chapter's central status effect is called Heresy. A survivor becomes heretical in two ways:

  • by being hit by The Judgment;
  • by taunting the killer (taunts, teabag gestures, and other in-game provocations here become a mechanical risk to take, which is a pretty clever idea).

A survivor afflicted with Heresy suffers a repair penalty on generators: they become dead weight for the team as long as the status holds. But more importantly, if they go down into the dying state while heretical, The Judgment can send them into The Hopeless Exile.

The Hopeless Exile: the game's first survivor teleportation

This is the chapter's true structural novelty. The Judgment is the first killer in Dead by Daylight capable of sending a survivor to another map tile. The downed, heretical survivor is sent into a dedicated zone, the Hopeless Exile, where they must survive whatever awaits there while waiting to be rescued by a teammate.

Veterans will recognize the kinship with the Void from the Haunted by Daylight event, the parallel zone from past Halloweens. The big difference here is that the mechanic isn't event-exclusive: it's built directly into the kit of a permanent killer.

For the survivor team, this changes the reading of the match from top to bottom. An exiled player is not on a hook: the sacrifice timer doesn't run the same way, but they also can't be picked up where they went down. The teammate who goes to retrieve them therefore physically leaves the generator area, which gives The Judgment a free pressure window on the rest of the map.

Zealous: the power window you can't afford to miss

Sending a survivor into exile triggers Zealous mode for 60 seconds. During this minute, the Divine Light is significantly boosted:

  • +10% beam size;
  • +50% channeling duration;
  • −20% cooldown.

In other words, the kit is built around a loop: apply Heresy, down the survivor, exile them, then convert the Zealous minute into a second down. Players who treat exile as a mere end-of-chase animation will be missing out on half the character.

The Judgment's three unique perks

Reminder: these values are from the PTB and will likely change before August 25.

  • Celestial Witness — briefly reveals your Obsession's aura when they are at a great distance from you. In the PTB, the trigger is periodic (every 30 seconds) and conditioned on a distance of 40 meters or more. It's a passive information perk, in the vein of Deadly Chase, but macro-oriented: it mostly tells you where not to look for pressure.
  • Hex: Under Your Thumb — lights a silent Totem as soon as a survivor reaches their first hook state. As long as the totem burns, survivors' Haste gain is capped at 25/20/15% depending on the level, and survivors benefiting from Haste are revealed. This is a direct counter to the entire family of speed builds — Sprint Burst foremost among them, and more broadly all Haste effects from escape perks. Like any Hex Totem, it remains vulnerable to cleansing and blessing.
  • Lay Waste — every time you damage a generator, the perk activates and makes it regress faster the more it was repaired. The PTB states +2% regression per charge, with a cooldown of 55/50/45 seconds. It's an anti-gen rush perk that specifically punishes generators left at 80-90% — exactly the behavior that optimized teams adopt to keep "candles" ready to finish.

Aurora Stardotter, the survivor

Aurora Stardotter is a spiritually-minded scientist, originally from the world that The Judgment destroyed. She is the first killer/survivor duo in the franchise to share such a blatantly post-apocalyptic origin: she isn't a victim crossed by chance, she is the survivor of his work.

Her three perks form a team support kit, oriented around generators and collective recovery:

  • Fruits of Your Labor — accumulates tokens as you repair. When you complete a generator, you gain Haste and increased healing progression, proportional to the number of tokens held. It's an end-of-repair perk: it turns the most dangerous moment in the game — the generator that pops and draws the killer's attention — into a repositioning window.
  • Salvation's Cry — while you are being chased, briefly reveals your aura and that of your teammates, in both directions. In practice: the survivor being chased knows where their allies are (and therefore where not to lead them), and the allies know where the chase is taking place. A passive communication tool for solo queue play, where the lack of coordinated info remains the primary factor in defeat.
  • Boon: Steadfast — creates a Boon Totem that, within its radius, slows generator regression and speeds up their repair. It's the first Boon perk in the game to act directly on generator economy rather than on healing or stealth, and it directly clashes with The Judgment's slowdown kit.

What to test first on the PTB

The Dead by Daylight PTB is Steam-exclusive — no PTB on console or Epic. If you get access, three things deserve your time before Behaviour closes the window.

Killer side. Measure the real-time duration of the Heresy → down → exile → Zealous loop. That's the only number that will determine whether The Judgment is viable at high MMR: a 110% who takes more than 60 seconds to convert their power window is mechanically behind the pace of the generators. Also test Divine Light against tiles with full walls — a channeled beam is traditionally eaten by LOS blockers, and that's where the balancing will play out.

Survivor side. Time the recovery of an exiled survivor. If the round trip costs more than a classic hook rescue, the mechanic will automatically be considered broken and the nerf will come. Also test Boon: Steadfast in a double boon setup with Boon: Circle of Healing: two blessed totems in the same area radically change the equation of a match.

For everyone. Send your feedback through the official PTB channel. On a chapter entirely born from community voting, Behaviour has an obvious image-related interest in listening to feedback — and the studio's recent history shows that PTB kits rarely come back intact.

The schedule to remember

August 4, 2026: PTB opens on Steam. August 25, 2026: Chapter 41 releases on all platforms. In between, expect at least one balance pass, as has been the case for practically every chapter over the past two years.

If you want to arrive prepared on August 25, our 2026 meta killer tier list and our two killer and survivor perk tier lists published in late July give you the context in which The Judgment is arriving: a meta still largely dominated by Jason Voorhees, the Nurse, and the Blight, where a 110% with a channeled power will have to prove it can keep up.

One thing is already certain: with Hopeless Exile, Behaviour is opening a door the game had never pushed open for a permanent killer before. Whether the character is strong at launch or not, the mechanic itself will leave its mark.

Frequently asked questions

Why is The Judgment different from other slow killers?
Unlike the Nurse or the Cenobite, The Judgment doesn't offer a positioning perk. His true power comes from control: he forces survivors to leave the generator area via exile, creating a free pressure window for the rest of the team while someone comes to retrieve them.
What is the Heresy and how does it work?
It's a status applied to the survivor either after a hit from Divine Light or after direct provocation. A heretical survivor suffers a repair penalty on generators and can be sent into exile if they go down in this state, which opens up unprecedented gameplay possibilities.
Can you really send a survivor to the other end of the map?
Yes: the Hopeless Exile works like a parallel zone similar to the Void from the Haunted by Daylight events, but this time it's permanent. The survivor must wait for a teammate to retrieve them, which forces the opposing team to temporarily abandon generator repairs.
When exactly does Zealous mode activate and for how long?
Zealous starts as soon as a heretical survivor is sent into exile and lasts 60 seconds. During this time, Divine Light gains +10% size, +50% channeling duration and -20% cooldown: this is the critical window for chaining a second down.
Will the PTB data change before the official release?
Almost certainly. Behaviour systematically adjusts numbers between the PTB and the live patch. The announced values (cooldowns, percentages, distances) are indicative and should not be treated as the final version for August 25.

Key takeaways

  • The Judgment breaks nine years of design by teleporting heretical survivors to the Hopeless Exile, a parallel zone that forces rescue decisions and opens up massive pressure windows
  • The Zealous mode triggered after each exile massively boosts the power for 60 seconds: the killer's real loop lies in the Heresy → down → exile → second strike chain
  • Its three unique perks short-circuit entire strategies: Celestial Witness scans from afar, Hex: Under Your Thumb chokes speed builds, and Lay Waste shreds generators at 80-90%
  • Aurora Stardotter, the first survivor to escape the world devastated by her oppressor, brings a team-support kit centered on generators and collective recovery
  • No new map is included: all the content is focused on the character duo and on a structurally unprecedented map mechanic
