Atomfall Tip: Finding the Crane Control Room Key
In brief
This guide explains how to find the access keycard to the crane control room in Atomfall to unlock a strategic shortcut to Skethermoor Prison. You'll discover the necessary prerequisites, the precise location of the access card, and how to use the crane controls to progress efficiently.
Atomfall is packed with secrets and shortcuts that can significantly ease your progress. Among these valuable passages is a direct access to Skethermoor prison via the Interchange facility. To unlock this path, you'll need to operate an imposing crane, but an obstacle stands in your way: the control room access card is nowhere to be found at first glance. This side quest, though optional, offers a significant strategic advantage for players wishing to efficiently explore the quarantine zone. Let's find out together how to get your hands on this famous key and activate the crane mechanism.
Prerequisites to access the crane control room
Before setting off in search of the control room access card, several preliminary steps are necessary. The Interchange facility is initially without power, and you'll need to partially restore it in order to progress.
The first step is to obtain an atomic battery. Two options are available from the start of the game: negotiate with Molly Jowett at Slatten Dale, or complete the investigation at Saint Katherine's Church to obtain the Vicar's key from McHenry. This key will allow you to open a chest on the second floor of the church containing the precious battery.
For less scrupulous players, note that it's also possible to eliminate Molly or Vicar McHenry to directly retrieve their atomic batteries. This approach, while morally questionable, represents a considerable time save.
Once you have a battery, head to the Interchange and locate the Central Processor Room. There you'll find a terminal called "Boot System" in which you can insert your atomic battery. This action will partially restore power to the facility, but for optimal operation, you'll need to reactivate four data storage units scattered throughout the complex.
To access the crane control room's access card, the Bravo data storage unit is the one you're particularly interested in. However, it can only be accessed via an entrance located at Skethermoor, heavily guarded by Protocol soldiers.

Location of the control room access card
To reach Skethermoor without trouble, two options are available to you. The first is to earn the trust of Captain Sims, leader of the Protocol. He will ask you for information about the events taking place in Wyndham Village. You can, in particular, tell him about Iris's infected husband at the bakery or about the murder that occurred at Saint Katherine's Church. If your information seems valuable to him, he'll consider you trustworthy enough to enter Skethermoor without being bothered by his men.
If you'd rather avoid any collaboration with Sims, a shortcut exists through the slate mine caves at Slatten Dale, located at coordinates 28.9 E, 71.1 N on your map.
The Skethermoor entrance leading to the Interchange is located at coordinates 39.6 E, 73.1 N, inside a Protocol camp. An automated turret guards the door, so be careful. Inside, Protocol soldiers patrol the area. Eliminate them or sneak past them, then head down the stairs. You'll find the closed quarantine door leading to the Interchange, which you'll need to open using the console located above it.
Note
Be careful when entering the Interchange: Outsiders are lurking on the other side of the quarantine door.
Crawl forward under a shutter you'll find further along, and the Bravo data storage will be visible on your left. Insert an atomic battery into the terminal to power this section. Then head down to the lower level and use a release mechanism to access an area leading to the Robotics department.
Restoring power to the Bravo storage will have the side effect of opening a shutter leading to a maintenance room housing a B.A.R.D. robot equipped with a flamethrower. You'll need to either fight it or sneak past it.
In this same maintenance room lies a bluish, emaciated corpse. Searching the body will finally reveal the crane control room keycard.

Using the crane controls
The crane control room is located across from where you found the keycard, on the other side of this area. This space may be infested with Protocol soldiers, B.A.R.D. robots, and wall turrets, making access difficult.
A simpler alternative is to go through the Delta data storage. You'll also need to reactivate it with an atomic battery to access the crane controls. Once power is restored, use a door on the upper level that will take you directly to the control room. Whichever entrance you choose, you'll need to use a card reader to gain access.
Inside, you'll find a note titled "To whom it may concern", mentioning the Signal Redirector, a crucial clue for operating the crane. A console with the crane's control lever will need to be powered. Near the desk where the note is located, spot an electrical box with a yellow light. Use the Redirector on it, then look up at the ceiling to locate another electrical box that needs redirecting. A third electrical box is located on the ceiling, near the lever. Use the Redirector on it to restore power to the crane controls.
Pull the lever and watch the crane lift a shipping container in the area leading to Robotics. This maneuver will unlock a new passage previously blocked by the container. Head to this location while staying alert for Protocol soldiers and robots. A wall turret in this new section will need to be disabled with the Signal Redirector. Below it, you'll discover a B.A.R.D. crate containing a Training Stimulant.
The most notable element of this area will be the entrance marked "Deliveries". This will lead you to the lower level of Skethermoor prison, where you will meet Dr. Garrow, who is being held captive. This non-player character may well hold crucial information regarding a potential escape route.
This tip will not only allow you to discover a valuable shortcut, but also to access additional resources and progress in Atomfall's storyline. Mastering these game mechanics will give you a definite advantage against the many challenges awaiting you in this fascinating world.
