Xbox digitizes your discs: revocable license, Insiders on August 31

In brief

Microsoft is allowing owners of Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games to claim a digital copy simply by inserting the disc into their console. Starting August 31, Xbox Insiders will be testing this feature, but one thing needs to be clearly understood: this is a revocable license, not transferable or resellable ownership.

Inserting an Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc into your console and launching the game will be enough to claim a digital copy of it. Microsoft announced this on August 26 in a post titled "Your Discs. Now Also Digital."; Xbox Insiders start testing on Monday, August 31.

The text is signed by Jason Ronald, "VP Next Generation." "Most" disc-based games from these two generations are covered, "thousands" to start, with the list set to grow. Once the license is claimed, the game benefits from Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming wherever they exist, and the disc keeps working as before. No date has been given for the general rollout.

The line nobody read

Several sites wrote that this copy would be transferable to a third party, and therefore resellable. The post says nothing of the sort: not a word about resale, lending, or transferring between accounts. The legal notice on the official visual is clear: "One revokable digital license per game disc". A revocable license, one per disc, whose eligibility may vary and change.

The context speaks for itself. Sony will stop producing discs for its new PlayStation games in January 2028. Microsoft isn't removing the disc: it's pairing it with a license. For those who own a boxed game library, the benefit is real — playing without inserting the disc, on PC, on the cloud — but it's called a license, not ownership.

Two limitations: the legal notice requires a console equipped with a disc drive, which rules out discless models, and nothing is said about the Xbox 360 or the original Xbox. As of August 27, the post was online in English only.

Frequently asked questions

Can I resell my game once I've claimed the digital version?
No. The legal notice in the official announcement mentions a "revokable digital license per game disc" — a revocable license, not ownership. Microsoft has said nothing about reselling, lending, or transferring to a third party. You retain the right to use the disc as before, but the digital game remains attached to your disc.
When will this feature be available to all players?
No date has been announced. Only Xbox Insiders will be able to test it starting August 31, 2024. The wide rollout remains unclear for now.
Does this work on all Xbox consoles?
No. You need a console equipped with a disc drive to claim the digital license, which rules out the Xbox Series S and disc-less models. The Xbox 360 and the original Xbox are not mentioned, so they are likely excluded.
If I claim the digital version, do I need to keep the disc?
Technically no to play the digital game, but the disc remains tied to the license. Microsoft has not clarified whether you can get rid of it without losing the claimed license, hence the importance of this legal distinction.

Key takeaways

  • Inserting an Xbox disc will be enough to claim its digital version, with access to Xbox Play Anywhere and cloud gaming.
  • The license is revocable and remains tied to the original disc, contrary to what some have misread online.
  • The thousands of games eligible at launch will gradually increase, but neither the Xbox 360 nor the original Xbox are covered for now.
  • The disc drive becomes mandatory to use this feature, which excludes the Xbox Series S and other disc-less models.
  • No wide rollout date has been announced, only the Insider test on August 31 is confirmed.
