The Water Treatment Plant has become a recurring system since Power Trip: two gear boxes pressurize it, three pipe connections allow you to power a farm hooked up to a roadside power pole. On day 10 of the wipe, it's still profitable before the Force Wipe on September 3rd — as long as you don't let the pressure drop.

Since the Force Wipe of August 6, 2026 and the Power Trip update, water pipes now run alongside Rust's roads. They're empty, and they'll stay that way until someone on your server goes and pressurizes the tank at the Water Treatment Plant. The operation costs Gears, an item the monument swallows without ever giving back.

We're on this Sunday, August 16, day 10 of the cycle: on populated servers, the power grid is already running, and there are 18 days left before the Force Wipe on Thursday, September 3, 2026 to make a large farm hooked up to a pipe worthwhile.

A note on vocabulary. Rust is well localized into French — the French Steam page lists "Français*," with the asterisk denoting audio support — so we use the game's official labels: Engrenages, Outil tuyau d'arrosage, Station d'épuration. As for the elements added on August 6, no French label has been recorded for them yet: we're keeping gearbox for the gear boxes and water pipe for the roadside pipes.

Nothing happens until the Power Plant is feeding the grid

The activation condition is non-negotiable: the Power Plant's grid must be powered. Otherwise, slotting a Gear into a box triggers nothing, and you'll have made the trip for nothing.

The access route hasn't changed with Power Trip: the heavy fuse box is in the green card room, next to the red recycler, and a switch tied to an Electrical Fuse opens the blue card room upstairs, from which the Power Plant is turned on. A Heavy Fuse lasts 9,600 seconds, or 2 hours 40 minutes, cannot be recovered, and can no longer be removed once inserted. The Water Treatment Plant therefore never restarts with the grid down: never in isolation.

Two gearboxes turn the valve wheel — and consume your Gears

The monument received an intact water tank at its center, fed by 2 new gearboxes. The action is simple: you place a Gear into a box, interact with it, and the valve wheel starts turning, which pressurizes the tank.

The point to know before heading out, the one that determines how many you bring: Gears are consumed as the wheel turns and can no longer be removed once inserted. This isn't a setup you recover: it's a recurring expense, like fuel for a generator.

At maximum pressure, the blades clear the blockages and water flows back into the pipes

You're not moving blind: pressure gauges are fitted to the tank and the gearboxes and show how the pressure buildup is progressing. That's your only reference on site, since the studio hasn't published a numerical value.

When the tank reaches maximum pressure, its blades start turning and clear the blockages. It's this clearing, not the pressurization alone, that restores water flow in the pipes: as long as pressure caps below that, they stay dry for everyone.

One clarification to avoid a misreading: Facepunch's setup targets the roadside pipes, and nothing indicates that the usual water sources — rivers, Wells — have changed. No one "shut off the water": the game added a network, and it starts closed.

Cold start is the real expense, upkeep costs much less

The economic logic of the system boils down to one sentence: the expensive part is the cold start, bringing an empty tank back up to maximum pressure. Regularly maintaining that pressure costs noticeably less than letting it all drop and starting from scratch again.

So build the monument into your routine, timed to the fuse respawn. And if you don't plan on coming back, don't start it up: you'd be funding someone else's farm.

On the logistics side: Gears stack in piles of 20, disappear from the ground after 40 minutes, and researching them at the Research Table costs 60 scrap, for an item with a workbench level of 3. Crafting does exist, but we couldn't reliably read the list of its components, and it's better to write nothing than send you off hunting for the wrong materials.

Every roadside pipe accepts three connections with the Hose Tool

Once the obstructions are cleared, the pipes spread out along the roads become usable. Each offers 3 connections to the Hose Tool, described in-game as the tool that establishes connections between objects that transport fluids.

Output flow rate also received a major boost late in the final balancing passes — no published numeric value, but the intent is clear: these pipes are meant to run a farm, not fill a canteen.

A pipe located near a powered roadside electrical pole brings together, on the same tile, the two resources of a great farm: water and power. Rustafied sums it up with the irony it deserves — the spot is excellent, "assuming no one else on the server had the same idea."

Roadside transformers can be climbed without a ladder and deliver power once the grid is switched on: 12 units per port in phase 1, 18 starting from phase 2. Access to them, however, depends on building privilege — if a neighbor has placed their tool cupboard over it, the outlet gets locked.

What Facepunch isn't putting numbers on, and what shouldn't be invented

The studio remains deliberately vague on this system. No official figures exist on:

  • the number of Gears needed for a cold start;
  • the rate at which the flywheel consumes them;
  • the intermediate pressure thresholds;
  • a pipe's flow rate;
  • the delay before obstructions return;
  • the number of pipes per map and their spawn rule.

The values circulating on these points are player estimates. The devblog also doesn't say whether the gear boxes are subject to building privilege, nor whether a player can block access to them.

What's left to do before September 3rd

The Force Wipe on August 6th launched Power Trip, no devblog has come out since, and the next one will drop on Thursday, September 3rd, 2026: eighteen days to pay off the installation, then everything starts over from scratch. A cold start begun on September 1st makes no sense at all; begun today, it still makes plenty of sense.

The order of operations doesn't change: turn on the Power Plant, bring in Gears, turn the wheel on the 2 boxes until maximum pressure, let the blades clear obstructions, then connect to a pipe backed by a powered transformer. And come back to maintain the pressure: that's the only way to avoid paying full price twice.
