Pokémon Champions: what the 2027 season changes for competing — Junior version on September 9, Switch consoles, first Global Challenge on the 24th

The 2026 World Championships are taking place this weekend in San Francisco. Meanwhile, The Pokémon Company International has posted the changes page for the 2027 Championship Series. It doesn't talk about metagame or sets: it says who will be allowed to compete next year, and on what machine. Two deadlines fall as early as September, on the 9th and the 24th.

A junior version mandatory in Brazil and Germany starting September 9

The page announces the release of a Junior version of Pokémon Champions on Nintendo Switch, scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, 2026. This is not an optional client: in two countries, it becomes the only way for the minors concerned to play in tournaments.

• Brazil: any player who will be under 14 years old on the first day of an event will have to use the Junior version on Nintendo Switch throughout the event.
• Germany: same rule, with a lowered threshold of under 12 years old.

The German, Spanish and French versions of the page say exactly the same thing, thresholds and date included. The publisher promises more information "in the coming weeks": at this stage, we don't know what this version removes from the game, nor how to obtain it.

The vocabulary pitfall to avoid. The Junior version is a game client. The Junior Division is an age category. An 11-year-old player elsewhere does compete in the Junior Division, but they are not affected by the Junior version: that only applies in Brazil and Germany.

The list of authorized devices includes only the Switch

The device policy for the 2027 season states that competitors "will have the option to use any console from the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 family of systems." Mobile is not mentioned there: neither allowed nor forbidden, simply absent from the list.

The contrast is stark compared to what the game's website highlights for casual play: "Pokémon Champions' cross-platform support allows mobile device users to battle Trainers playing on Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2." Since June, iOS and Android have shared the same playing field as the console. In official competition, this bridge does not carry over.

The issue isn't limited to in-person events. The Global Challenges page, even though these are online competitions played from home, also requires that competitors own "their own Pokémon Champions game and Nintendo Switch console." Playing on phone only in 2027 therefore means scoring zero Championship Points, even online.

One caveat before drawing conclusions: the device policy for the 2027 World Championships will be published separately, at a later date. Nothing indicates it will be identical.

First Global Challenge on September 24, and no Grand Challenge this season

The season's first Pokémon VGC Global Challenge begins on Thursday, September 24, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PDT, that is 6:00 p.m. EDT and 10:00 PM UTC — past midnight in continental Europe, in the night from Thursday the 24th to Friday the 25th. The German and Spanish pages give the UTC time, the English one its local equivalent: all three match.

The schedule includes six Global Challenges: September, October, and December 2026, then January, March, and April 2027. And one line not to be missed: "no Grand Challenges are currently scheduled for the 2027 season."

Now the Best Finish Limit is set at 4, and it's shared between Global Challenges and Grand Challenges. Since there is no Grand Challenge, the consequence is direct: out of six events, only your four best count. Two wildcards, not one more.

Three prerequisites appear on the same page, and they are checked before registration: owning the game and its Nintendo Switch console, having a Pokémon Trainer Club account with a linked player ID, and having enrolled in the Play! Pokémon program. Without this enrollment, you play the tournament but you score nothing.

What a Global Challenge earns you

The 2027 point scale has been published. It applies per rating zone, and each tier only opens once a minimum number of entrants in your zone is reached.

The steepest drop is between 8th and 9th place: 52 points on one side, 25 on the other. The publisher notes that these values remain subject to change.

How many invitations for the 2027 World Championships

Another change: a predefined number of competitors per rating zone, per age division, and per game earns an invitation to the World Championships based on their Championship Point leaderboard standings. For the Video Game Championships (VGC), the published table shows:

A player based in Europe sits in the Europe zone: 90 spots in the Masters Division, 40 each in Junior and Senior. The same zone has 140 Master spots on the TCG side. The Video Game Championships are clearly the more selective of the two.

Play! Points no longer break ties for Travel Awards

Until now, two competitors tied in the final rankings were separated by the number of Play! Points accumulated. Starting with the 2027 Europe International Championships, in London in February, the tiebreaker that decides the allocation of Travel Awards will be based on the finishing positions at previous Regional and International Championships. Accumulating Play! Points will therefore no longer be enough to win a tie for travel support.

The publisher also states it has revised Championship Point awards and Best Finish Limits in order to "award more Championship Points to competitors lower in the standings" at Regionals and Internationals. The detailed point scales live on the pages for each event type.

The schedule, and a typo the French page carries alone

Three Internationals are locked in: São Paulo in November 2026 for Latin America, London in February 2027 for Europe, Chicago in June 2027 for North America. The Pokémon UNITE Championship Series, on the other hand, is leaving the circuit: the 2027 season will be limited to a single in-person event in Japan, with travel expenses covered for qualifying teams.

One last point, for anyone cross-checking against a translated page. As of August 29, the French version still reads « Catégorie master : personnes nées en 2021 ou avant ». That's a typo in the French localisation alone: the English page says "Masters Division: Competitors born 2010 or earlier", and the German, Spanish and Italian pages agree — « 2010 oder früher geboren », « nacidos en 2010 o antes », « nati nel 2010 o precedentemente ».

The 2027 age divisions are therefore: Junior for competitors born in 2015 or later, Senior for 2011 through 2014 inclusive, Masters for 2010 or earlier. Your division is set at the start of the season based on your birth year and doesn't change until the end.
