Pokémon Champions: Alolan Raichu and the 100 Speed Coupons only drop after three battles — sign up from August 14

The registration window for the Pokémon Champions monthly tournament opened this Friday, August 14 at 02:00 UTC, that is 4:00 a.m. in France. It remains open until Monday, August 24 at 01:59 UTC. The battles themselves only take place from Friday, August 21 at 02:00 UTC to Monday, August 24 at 01:59 UTC.

This split between registration and competition is the source of virtually all the disappointment every month. It's worth spelling out clearly, because it trips up newcomers and regulars alike.

The rule that decides everything: three battles minimum

This is the central point, and it's not negotiable. Trainers who play three battles or more receive the participation reward. Below three, you get nothing — regardless of your result, regardless of your ranking.

The participation reward includes:

• an Alolan Raichu;
• 100 Speed Coupons;
• the title "Underdog (MCS 08/2026)".

In other words: you can lose all three of your matches and still walk away with the entire participation reward. This is by far the best effort-to-reward ratio of the month, and it's also why you absolutely shouldn't register thinking you'll play "if you have time." Three losses in ten minutes are worth more than an absence.

The schedule, French time

To avoid any confusion, here are the four key dates converted:

• Registration opens: Friday, August 14, 02:00 UTC — 4:00 a.m. in Paris.
• Battles begin: Friday, August 21, 02:00 UTC — 4:00 a.m. in Paris.
• Registration closes: Monday, August 24, 01:59 UTC — 3:59 a.m. in Paris.
• Battles end: Monday, August 24, 01:59 UTC — 3:59 a.m. in Paris.

One nuance that matters: registration remains open during the competition. So you can sign up on Sunday evening, August 23, and play your three battles right after. This isn't the recommended strategy, but it's a safety net if you forgot — many players wrongly believe registration closes at the starting whistle.

The format: Single Battle, M-B ruleset

The competition is played in Single Battle, under the M-B ruleset. This is the same setup as last month, which has a nice practical consequence: you don't have to rebuild anything. A team that worked in July still works now.

Single Battle requires a team of three Pokémon, which completely changes the calculations compared to Doubles. Two useful reminders for those coming from classic VGC:

Speed control matters more, not less. Without a partner to set up Tailwind or Trick Room alongside your attacker, every turn spent setting up is a turn you take damage alone. Fast, immediately threatening Pokémon are more valuable here.

Coverage gaps are punished immediately. Three Pokémon means three answers. An uncovered weakness becomes a loss, whereas in Doubles you could mask it through positioning. Make sure your three picks don't share the same weakness — the classic mistake of an improvised Single Battle team.

Titles based on ranking

Beyond participation, four ranking tiers reward the final standings:

• 1st to 10th place: title “Ace (MCS 08/2026)”;
• 11th to 100th place: title “Venerable (MCS 08/2026)”;
• 101st to 1,000th place: title “Top (MCS 08/2026)”;
• 1,001st to 10,000th place: title “Budding (MCS 08/2026)”.

The tier that matters for the average player is the last one. Ten thousand spots is a lot of room. In a monthly tournament where a large share of entrants play their three matches and stop there, a handful of wins is usually enough to secure “Budding”. If you're after a title without dedicating a whole weekend to it, that's the one to aim for — and it comes down to the number of matches played as much as the win rate.

What's happening in parallel until September 9

The Monthly Challenge doesn't stand alone. Ranked Battle Season M-5 runs from Wednesday, August 5 at 02:00 UTC to Wednesday, September 9 at 01:59 UTC, and Champion rank as well as Master Ball levels 1 to 3 have been accessible since August 12.

This creates a scheduling opportunity that few players take advantage of: the three Monthly Challenge matches call for the same team and the same reflexes as Ranked. The week of August 21 to 24 is therefore the right time to do both in the same session, while your read on the meta is still fresh.

Season M-5's Battle Pass

The last piece of the same calendar, available from August 5 to September 9.

The standard pass grants Marshadow, Marshadowite, 48 Speed-Up Coupons, 4 Permanent Recruitment Tickets, 4 Training Tickets, and 10,000 PML.

The premium pass adds Tauros and Bagworm — wait, let me keep official names — Tauros and Wormadam... hold on.

The plan for the week

1. Today: sign up. It's free and doesn't commit you to anything.
2. Between now and the 21st: play Ranked with the team you plan to bring. Season M-5 uses the same ruleset, so the practice isn't wasted.
3. Check your three Pokémon: no shared weakness, and at least one answer to speed control.
4. From the 21st to the 24th: play at least three matches. That's the threshold that unlocks the Alolan Raichu, the 100 Coupons, and the title.
5. If you're up for it, keep going: the top 10,000 tier is reachable just by racking up matches.
