Path of Exile 3.29: the Permutation Crystals guide to transform a unique into a Vestigial unique
In brief
Permutation Crystals turn your cheap uniques into rare uniques via the Domain of Timeless Conflict. Since patch 3.29.2, they charge up to three times to increase Variant Rarity and land truly useful uniques. This guide explains which crystal to buy for which gear, how to farm Legion Generals, and which Timeless Emblem to pick without ruining yourself.
The Legion rework shipped with Path of Exile 3.29 brought far more than a facelift for the Domain of Timeless Conflict: it introduced a machine for recycling unique items that half the league still leaves aside. The principle boils down to one sentence: you enshroud a cheap unique, take it into the Domain, and come back out with another unique of the same item class, bonus points for an inherited implicit modifier from the sacrificed item.
Patch 3.29.2, rolled out on August 6, 2026, turned this system from a curiosity into a genuine economic lever. Enshrouded items can now be charged up to three times instead of once, and each full charge adds Variant Rarity — the higher it is, the greater the chance that the resulting unique is a rare unique. In other words, the same run through the Domain can now aim for an expensive outcome instead of spitting out a bottom-of-the-stash unique.
Here's how the mechanic actually works, which crystals to prioritize buying, which Timeless Emblem to choose depending on your build, and which Atlas tree nodes feed the chain.
What a Crystallised Lifeforce actually does
The French client is crystal clear on this point: « Les objets Enveloppés peuvent être transformés dans le Domaine du Conflit intemporel en un autre objet Unique de la même classe d'objet, doté d'un modificateur implicite Vestigial dérivé de l'objet Enveloppé. »
The full chain runs in four steps:
- You use an Enshrouding Crystal on a unique item — right-click on the crystal, left-click on the unique. The item becomes an enshrouded item (Enshrouded Gloves, Enshrouded Boots, Enshrouded Helmet, Enshrouded Shield, Enshrouded Body Armour depending on the case).
- You open a portal to the Domain of Timeless Conflict (a level 80 zone) by placing a Timeless Emblem in the map device.
- Once there, four Crystallisation Crystals await you. You deposit your enshrouded items in them — four at most per visit.
- You kill monsters in the Domain: every kill charges the deposited items. Once charging is complete, you interact with the crystal to drop the new unique on the ground.
The Vestigial implicit is the real point of the whole operation: it preserves a trace of the original item on the resulting item. This is what lets you attach an effect normally reserved for one specific unique onto another unique of the same class, and thus craft pieces of gear that are otherwise impossible to obtain.
The five Enshrouding Crystals, one per slot
Each crystal only works on one specific item class. That's the first trap: the faction name tells you nothing about the slot involved, you have to learn it by heart.
| Crystal (official FR name) | Unique items involved | English name |
|---|---|---|
| Cristal enveloppant karui | Gloves | Karui Enshrouding Crystal |
| Cristal enveloppant impérial | Boots | Imperial Enshrouding Crystal |
| Cristal enveloppant vaal | Helmets | Vaal Enshrouding Crystal |
| Cristal enveloppant templier | Shields | Templar Enshrouding Crystal |
| Cristal enveloppant maraketh | Body Armours | Maraketh Enshrouding Crystal |
The five stack in tens and are traded on the Currency Exchange. The price gaps between them are considerable: as of August 10, 2026, PoEDB's economy records place the Maraketh crystal, the one for armour, far ahead of all the others, the Vaal crystal in second place, and the remaining three just a few chaos orbs apart. Traded volumes are low and prices move fast: check the day's rate before buying in bulk, especially for armour.
Where crystals drop: from Legion Generals, not in the Domain
A point that is often misunderstood: Encased Crystals only drop from Legion Generals encountered in Maps. They never drop inside the Timeless Conflict Domain. The Domain is the workshop, the Map is the mine.
Practical consequence: your farming strategy must maximize the number of Generals encountered, not the number of Legion monsters killed. Two notable nodes on the Atlas tree do all the work:
- Face to Face: your Legion encounters have a 60% increased chance to include a General, and those that do contain two.
- Perpetual Battle and Monumental: +16% chance per node that your Maps contain a Legion encounter, and 16% additional chance that dropped scarabs are Legion Scarabs.
The small passives Legion General Chance (20% each) and Legion Monolith Chance (+8% each) round out the picture at little cost. Conversely, be wary of the notable Sealed Domain: it simply removes any chance of a Legion encounter in your Maps. Excellent for targeted farming of other content, disastrous here.

Charging the item: Variant Rarity added in 3.29.2
This is the change that makes the system interesting. Before August 6, 2026, an encased item could be charged once, full stop. Since 3.29.2, it can be charged up to three times, and each full charge grants it a tier of Variant Rarity (the French label for this statistic has not yet been recorded in the client — we are keeping the English term). The higher the Variant Rarity, the greater the chance that the resulting Vestigial unique belongs to the rare uniques category.
A second useful point: you can extract the item from a crystal as soon as you have validated at least one full charge. Nothing forces you to go all the way to three. This is a genuine risk trade-off: the Domain is a survival arena where monsters are resurrected on a loop, and each resurrection makes them tougher. Staying for the third charge means facing a wave that has already stacked up several tiers of bonuses.
The rule of thumb is simple. On a cheap encased item, extract at the first charge and move on. On an expensive base — typically an armour piece put through the Maraketh crystal — aim for all three charges, but bring a character able to endure the duration, not just clear quickly.
Choosing your Timeless Emblem according to your build
The five Timeless Emblems have been rewritten in 3.29 and now share a common base: 10% increased experience gain, 20% increased reward progress from kills, monsters deal 10% additional damage and gain 10% more robustness per resurrection. Only the fifth line changes, and it's this one that should dictate your choice.
| Timeless Emblem | Specific effect (per resurrection) | Avoid if… |
|---|---|---|
| of the Karui | +50% chance to deal a critical hit and +5% to critical hit multiplier | you play without reduced critical hit damage taken |
| of the Maraketh | +5% attack and cast speed | you tank hits while blocking or parrying and fear stacking issues |
| of the Templars | 3% penetration of elemental resistances | your survival relies on maxed elemental resistances |
| of the Vaal | 5% of physical damage added as extra chaos damage | your chaos resistance is negative |
| of the Eternal Empire | +10% accuracy and +5% area of effect | you play a build based on evasion and range |
For a character loaded with elemental resistances but with chaos resistance left neglected — the most common profile at the start of a league — the Templars' emblem is the least dangerous and the Vaal's the most treacherous. An evasion-based build, on the other hand, would prefer anything but the Eternal Empire, whose increased accuracy progressively cancels out its main weakness.
Reading the new reward tracker
The Domain has also changed its interface, and the old reflex no longer works. Reward icons no longer appear above monsters, and the icon list at the bottom of the screen has disappeared. The count is now read on the small crystals arranged in the center of the Domain, which light up progressively: one lit crystal equals three of the old reward icons. Both changes are purely cosmetic: certain monsters still grant rewards upon death, and once all one hundred small crystals are lit, continuing to kill still pays off.
The other pitfalls of the Legion rework
Several farming habits inherited from previous leagues no longer hold up since 3.29:
- Timeless Splinters now only drop from Legion Sergeants and Generals, never from ordinary monsters. In return, Generals drop more of them on average. They also no longer drop outside of Legion encounters and Maps completed for you since Marcheroi.
- The "Unrelenting" Timeless Emblems have been removed; existing copies have been converted into ordinary Timeless Emblems.
- A Legion encounter now ends on its own: if you've freed 90% of the monsters from stasis, the rest — including chests, Sergeants, and Generals — are automatically freed. No more need to chase down the last monster stuck in the scenery.
- Incubators and the Timeless Orb of Delirium can no longer be obtained. Existing copies already in play on Standard leagues remain usable.
- The Emblematic notable gives a 0.3% chance that a dropped Timeless Splinter becomes a Timeless Emblem directly: on a high-volume Legion farm, this is what funds the portals to the Domain.
Where to actually start
If you've never touched Corruption Crystals, the cheapest way to get started is to first invest in Face to Face and one or two Legion Monolith Chances, farm Maps until you gather a few Karui or Imperial Wrapping Crystals — the two cheapest ones — then test them on glove and boot uniques you'd otherwise let rot in a stash. A visit to the Domain with four filled crystals costs an Eternal Emblem and five minutes.
The real calculation comes next: once you know you can hold the Domain long enough to validate three charges, the question is no longer "is this profitable" but "on which item class". And since 3.29.2, the answer clearly leans toward the slots where rare uniques are worth the most, i.e. body armours and helmets — provided you're willing to pay the entry cost of the Maraketh crystal.
