NTE Cartridges and Modules: How to Get and Upgrade Them

Optimizing your character in NTE: Neverness to Everness inevitably goes through two systems: cartridges and modules. Two linked mechanics, a bit odd to grasp at first, but which form the core of gearing once you understand the logic. Here's everything you need to know.

Cartridges and modules, what are they for?

atridges are equippable items that apply specific effects to your character in combat. Each one has its own properties - some geared toward damage, others defensive or utility-focused - and it's better to choose them in line with your playstyle rather than equipping whatever at random.

odules, meanwhile, are used to boost certain stats on your character. But be careful: their true potential is only unlocked when they're matched with the right equipped cartridges. A module picked at random without factoring in your cartridges is pure waste. Each cartridge has a set effect that triggers when the right module is in place - it's this synergy that makes the difference between a solid build and a trash build.

Also worth noting: each character has a unique console shape, with module slots of different shapes. This means you have to adapt the modules you get to each character's specific layout. A module that's a perfect fit for one hunter might be unusable as-is on another.

How to get cartridges in NTE

The main source is the Rabbit Hole challenge. Head to Cape Square, south of the New Herland district. Interact with the rabbit to start the challenge. Each run consumes 40 Character Pixels (the game's stamina), so manage your reserve carefully if you're planning a long farming session.

Each level of the Rabbit Hole rewards different cartridges, with varied properties. The idea is to target the levels that drop cartridges compatible with your current build, not just to loop endlessly on the easiest level.

Good news: cartridges can also be obtained via Rewind, the pull feature in the Console menu, by spending Bronze Carrota. It's less efficient for stockpiling large amounts, but it comes in handy when you're trying to complete a specific set.

How to get modules in NTE

Modules go through the Rewind system, accessible from your character's page: go to the Console category, then find the Rewind button at the bottom left of the screen. It's a module gacha - with Carrota as the exclusive currency, not standard premium currency.

Three pull difficulties, three types of modules:

• Easy: Blue modules - costs Bronze Carrota
• Normal: Pink/purple modules - costs Silver Carrota
• Hard: Gold/orange modules - costs Gold Carrota

Honestly, Hard mode is the one that's really worth it in the long run. Gold modules have significantly higher stats. But to get there, you first need to progress.

Raising your hunter level

Rewind's Normal and Hard modes aren't available right away. You need to raise your hunter level: Normal mode unlocks at level 20, and Hard mode at level 30. This is one of the points that frustrated quite a few players at launch - and honestly, it's understandable.

Upgrading your character with cartridges and modules

Upgrading cartridges and modules requires Manhole pieces, which come in three variants: Manhole Thug, Manhole Crook, and Manhole Boss. On top of that, you'll also need Beetle Coins and Manhole EXP materials. All these resources drop from Rabbit Hole challenges - one more reason not to neglect this content even once your cartridge collection is well stocked.

One tip circulating in the community that's really worth following: rather than using your duplicate cartridges and modules as simple XP fodder, recycle them for Rewind materials instead. The return is noticeably better for optimizing your console over the long run.

Also remember that each character has a unique console shape that favors certain types of modules - a critical hit chance bonus for one, an elemental damage boost for another. Take the time to check these affinities before investing heavily in a module set, or you risk having to start over from scratch on another character.
