In brief

August 2026 is the most generous month of the summer for free-to-play Hearthstone players. Between the "Zuramat Runs Wild!" event, the weekly Battle.net Shop gifts, the return of the Heroic Tavern Brawl and the Darkmoon Faire, you can collect five full cards in both normal and golden versions, dozens of packs, and Hero skins without spending a single cent — provided you know where to claim them and by what date.

The Hearthstone 36.2 update isn't just about the launch of Battlegrounds Season 14. Alongside it, Blizzard has opened a three-week window of free rewards ranging from the in-game event to weekly Battle.net shop gifts, not to mention the return of Heroic Tavern Brawl and the Darkmoon Faire.

For a free-to-play player, this is the most profitable month of the summer. You just need to know what to claim, where, and above all by what date. This guide provides the complete rundown, with official English labels and the Tavern Brawl rewards table.

"Zuramat Unleashed!": from August 4 to August 25

The main event features Zuramat the Obliterator, a Void entity that escaped from Fort Violet. Its containment crystal has been damaged, and it is now trying to create a black hole inside the fort. Watsailer is leading the investigation — a character whose specialty, as Blizzard reminds us with a wink, is spotting suspicious activity, "especially when a card looks shifty."

The principle is the same as recent events: you complete event quests and collect rewards as you progress.

The full list of rewards

  • 1 regular and Golden copy of Watsailer;
  • 2 regular and Golden copies of Desperate Bribe;
  • 2 regular and Golden copies of Soulburn;
  • 4 Fort Violet Escape! packs;
  • 2 Golden Fort Violet Escape! packs;
  • the Heroic "Milhouse, Escape Artist" skin for the Mage class.

That's five cards in total, each provided in both regular and Golden versions, plus six packs, entirely free. On the scale of a free-to-play economy, that's the equivalent of several days' worth of daily quests.

One thing to understand: Blizzard notes that once the event ends, these cards will become obtainable in Fort Violet Escape! packs starting with update 36.4. So they're not exclusive forever — but grabbing them now saves you from having to gamble for them in packs later, and you get them in Golden form on top of that.

Soulburn: the card that will shake up the meta

This isn't just an event card. Blizzard has explicitly tied it to its Demon Hunter balancing, in a developer comment that's worth reading.

The studio acknowledges that its previous Demon Hunter buffs "overshot their goal": the class has become one of the strongest in the game, with an outsized impact on the meta. Blizzard is therefore making an additional adjustment to Voidscale Brute:

  • before: Battlecry and Deathrattle: Gain a Void Soul;
  • now: Deathrattle: Gain a Void Soul.

Losing the Battlecry is a heavy hit: the card no longer generates immediate value on play, which breaks its tempo outright. You can disenchant it for its full dust value for two weeks after 36.2 goes live — keep that in mind before the window closes, especially if you own a Golden copy.

In the same move, Blizzard says it's waiting to see how Void Soul demon hunters will exploit the unique effect of Soul Immolation. In short: the studio trims one piece of the puzzle and hands out another one for free. If you play the class, this is the card to test first as soon as it drops.

The weekly gifts from the Battle.net shop

This is the appointment not to miss, and it's completely independent of the in-game quests.

From August 4 to 25, head to the Battle.net shop every week to grab a Fall of Fort Purple gift. New rewards appear every Tuesday at 7 p.m. Paris time.

It's the kind of free content that completely flies under the radar because you have to leave the client to claim it. Set yourself a reminder for Tuesday, August 11, 18, and 25.

Also note that since August 4 the shop has been offering a special deal on the legendary pack "Tyrande, Warrior of the Night" as well as early access to the signature pack "Iconic Locations". Those are paid.

The Heroic Tavern Brawl: August 12 to 19

The game's most demanding format returns for a week. The principle:

  • you build a Standard deck using cards from your collection;
  • entry costs 1,000 gold;
  • you play up to 12 wins or 3 losses;
  • rewards depend on your final score.

The rewards chart, tier by tier

  • 0 wins: 1 pack
  • 1 win: 2 packs
  • 2 wins: 3 packs
  • 3 wins: 4 packs, ~120 dust, ~120 gold
  • 4 wins: 5 packs, ~190 dust, ~190 gold
  • 5 wins: 6 packs, ~220 dust, ~220 gold
  • 6 wins: 7 packs, ~250 dust, ~250 gold
  • 7 wins: 8 packs, ~280 dust, ~280 gold
  • 8 wins: 9 packs, ~310 dust, ~310 gold
  • 9 wins: 16 packs, ~400 dust, ~400 gold
  • 10 wins: 16 packs, ~400 dust, ~400 gold, 1 golden legendary card
  • 11 wins: 16 packs, ~480 dust, ~480 gold, 2 golden legendary cards
  • 12 wins: 50 packs, ~1,100 dust, ~1,100 gold, 3 golden legendary cards

Is it worth paying the 1,000 gold?

The math becomes clear once you look at the curve. The real jump happens at 9 wins: you go from 9 to 16 packs in one step. And the 12-win tier is a value chasm — 50 packs and three golden legendaries.

But be careful not to fool yourself about profitability. 1,000 gold is exactly 10 packs bought directly from the shop — that's your point of comparison. At 3 wins, you get 4 packs, 120 dust, and 120 gold: you're losing out big time. The break-even point sits around 5 wins (6 packs, plus roughly 220 gold and 220 dust, which is about the value of the entry fee). You only start actually profiting from 6 wins onward, and the returns become excellent at 9 and beyond.

Our recommendation: if you're comfortable in Standard with a well-tuned meta deck and you're regularly aiming for 6 wins or more, go for it. If you mostly play Battlegrounds and your Standard collection is thin, hold onto your gold — the format is ruthless and you'll run into optimized decks from turn one.

The Moonlight Festival: from August 11 to September 8

The festival returns to celebrate Qixi, a traditional celebration devoted to love and devotion — a theme Blizzard builds around Turalyon and Alleria, described as "Azeroth's most iconic love story".

Two hero skins are being featured:

  • "Turalyon Celebrates Qixi", a Mythic hero skin — a fully reimagined look, with a complete set of custom animations: intro, hero power, attack, spell cast, victory, and defeat;
  • "Alleria Celebrates Qixi", a Diamond hero skin — a look inspired by the festival, with intro, emote, hero power, attack, victory, and defeat animations.

Watch out for the mechanic: the Moonlight Festival treasures are a random reward system. You can get pets, mythic skins, signature cards, and hero skins from it. The first attempt is free; subsequent ones cost runes. Each attempt grants a reward, and the entry price adjusts based on the value of the items available.

In other words: the Turalyon and Alleria skins aren't available for direct purchase. They're in a draw pool. Take your free attempt, and think twice before going further — Blizzard publishes the drop rates on a dedicated page, go check them out before spending anything.

What's also changing on the technical side

One point not to overlook: Hearthstone has moved to a newer version of Unity with this update, and the minimum system requirements have been changed accordingly. If the game refuses to launch or runs abnormally slowly since August 4, check the support page for system requirements for your operating system.

Patch 36.2 also fixes a long list of bugs, including several problematic interactions: Shadow of Death being playable after a non-spell card, Shattered Dragonsoul's essence being cast twice by Sinestra, Mana Burns only applying every other time on the same turn, Preparation incorrectly triggering Agamaggan's effect, and games refusing to start with a priest deck containing both Soulbreaker Azalina and Medivh, the Guardian.

Key dates to remember

  • August 4 to 25 — “Zuramat Unleashed!” event and weekly Battle.net gifts (every Tuesday at 7 p.m.).
  • Until roughly August 18 — full-value disenchant window for Voidscale Brute (two weeks after deployment).
  • August 11 to September 8 — Darkmoon Faire, Qixi theme.
  • August 12 to 19 — Heroic Tavern Brawl.

And if you mainly came for Battlegrounds, our Dalaran Dark Gifts guide published on August 4 details the new season 14 mechanic and the optimal moment to spend your 3 gold coins.

Frequently asked questions

I only play Battlegrounds. Should I really try the Heroic Tavern Brawl?
No, unless you have a well-tuned Standard deck and confidence in your skills. The format is unforgiving, with optimized decks from turn one. Unless you're regularly aiming for 6 wins or more, you'll lose your gold: save it for daily quests instead.
Will the event cards disappear after August 25?
No. Blizzard has confirmed they'll be available in Fall of Crimson Keep packs starting with update 36.4. Claiming them now simply spares you the lottery and gives you golden versions right away.
Where do I claim the weekly Battle.net Shop gifts?
You need to go to the Battle.net Shop itself, not the Hearthstone client. New rewards appear every Tuesday at 1 p.m. ET. Set reminders for Tuesdays, August 11, 18, and 25 so you don't miss them.
What's the best reward from the Heroic Tavern Brawl?
The 12-win tier is insane: 50 packs, about 1,100 dust, 1,100 gold, and 3 golden Legendary cards. But it's also the hardest to reach. The real jump starts at 9 wins, where you go from 9 to 16 packs.
Do I have to pay for the Turalyon and Alleria Hero skins from the Darkmoon Faire?
Not directly. They're part of a random draw pool. You get one free attempt, but after that you'll need to spend runes. Check the drop rates on Blizzard's official page before diving in, or you risk wasting your money.

Key takeaways

  • The "Zuramat Runs Wild!" event gives you five cards for free in both normal and golden versions, the equivalent of several days' worth of daily quests.
  • Soulburn is set to weigh heavily on the Demon Hunter meta: Voidscale Brute lost its Battlecry, creating room for this new card.
  • The weekly Battle.net Shop gifts go largely unnoticed but only take a click on Tuesdays, August 11, 18, and 25 at 1 p.m. ET.
  • The Heroic Tavern Brawl only pays off your gold if you're aiming for at least 5-6 wins; beyond 9 wins, it becomes a value sinkhole.
  • The Darkmoon Faire is a random draw: the first attempt is free, but the Turalyon and Alleria skins require either luck or patience.
