In brief

Battlegrounds Season 14 completely shakes things up with Dark Gifts, a gold-cost mechanic that activates on turn 3 and grants unprecedented powers to your minions. Between 97 minions removed, 60 new ones added, and increased economic pressure, this brutal overhaul wipes out the advantages of experienced players — it's the perfect time to try it out before the metas settle.

Battlegrounds Season 14, titled Dalaran Dark Gifts, kicks off this August 4, 2026 at 7 p.m. (Paris time), following the 36.2 update deployed the day before. And it needs to be said upfront: this is one of the most brutal overhauls the mode has ever seen.

97 minions removed. 22 cards changed. More than 60 new minions added. Suffice it to say your reflexes from last season are largely obsolete. Add to that an entirely new mechanic that activates starting turn three, and you get a season where everyone starts on equal footing — ranked players included.

This guide explains what's really changing, and above all how to approach the new mechanic without sabotaging your economy.

Dark Gifts: the season's central mechanic

How it works

Dark Gifts are upgrades that grant your minions forbidden powers. The way it works is simple to state:

  • Starting turn 3, a dedicated button appears.
  • It lets you spend 3 gold to Discover one of three minions offered.
  • Each of the three minions offered is tied to a unique Dark Gift.

Crucial point: you're not choosing a gift, you're choosing a minion + gift pairing. The best gift on the wrong minion is often worthless, and a mediocre minion carrying the right gift can carry an entire game.

With more than 40 Dark Gifts in circulation, the variety is real: no two games will offer you the same opportunities.

The real stakes: the 3 gold cost

This is where the season is truly decided, and it's what the first games are going to teach everyone the hard way.

Three gold on turn 3 is not trivial. That's the cost of a refresh plus a purchase, or a good chunk of your tavern tier upgrade. In a mode where the economic curve of the early turns determines your mid-game positioning, mechanically spending 3 gold every time the button lights up is the best way to end up a tier behind by turn 6.

Our take for the first few days: treat the Dark Gift as an investment, not an obligation. Three questions to ask yourself before clicking:

  1. Do I already have a composition direction? A Dark Gift taken before identifying your game plan risks locking you into a path you won't actually follow.
  2. Can I afford the tier delay? If your plan relied on a fast tier climb, 3 gold taken at the wrong moment costs more than it earns.
  3. Does the associated minion have value on its own? Because you'll be keeping it, gift or no gift.

As with any optional paid mechanic in Battlegrounds, the classic early-days mistake is overconsumption. Expect the community to correct course toward more selective usage after about a week.

The two new heroes

Season 14 introduces two heroes:

  • Xavius, Nightmare Lord
  • Tras'tath, Soul Parasite

Both fit the season's dark theme. As always at the start of a season, be wary of early evaluations: launch heroes are systematically either overrated or underrated during the first ten days, before the real statistics settle.

Trinkets stay, and expand

Good news for those who had gotten their bearings: Trinkets aren't going away. They coexist with Dark Gifts this season, and the catalog is growing with 23 new minor trinkets and 24 new major trinkets.

This coexistence is the point to watch in terms of balance. Two parallel upgrade systems, both gold-based, create significant economic pressure on the early turns. It's likely that Blizzard will adjust costs or frequencies as the season progresses.

New synergies: Beasts that attack during the recruit phase

The most surprising mechanical addition concerns Beasts, via a keyword named in English Fishbait — its French wording has not yet been spotted, so we're deliberately keeping the original term rather than proposing a homemade translation.

What this mechanic does is unprecedented: it lets your Beasts attack during the recruit phase. In other words, an offensive action outside of the combat phase, something the mode had never allowed before.

Another synergy, tied to Pirates and named in English Lockbox, also comes into play this season.

The Activate keyword rounds things out: it lets you spend gold to trigger certain minions' abilities.

One thing is clear: Season 14 multiplies the uses of gold. Dark Gifts, Trinkets, Activate — everything costs something. The core skill this season won't be knowing which minion is strong, but knowing where to put your gold.

The rest of update 36.2

An off-schedule adjustment in Standard

The Demon Hunter receives an unplanned correction. Blizzard judged that the card Vicious Voidscale was a statistical outlier in the meta: its Battlecry effect is removed, leaving only the Deathrattle.

Remember to disenchant it: it's refundable at full value for two weeks after the patch. That's free arcane dust if you don't plan on playing it anymore.

This month's events

  • Zuramat's Rampage, from August 4 to 25: quests to complete to earn event cards, including Soul Immolation, as well as a hero skin for Millhouse Manastorm. Since the French wording of these event cards has not yet been spotted, we're keeping their English names here.
  • Heroic Tavern Brawl returns from August 12 to 19.
  • Qixi cosmetics celebrate Turalyon and Alleria, with mythic and diamond hero skins, distributed via Darkmoon Faire treasures. The Darkmoon Faire returns from August 11 to September 8 for the occasion.

A technical point not to overlook

Update 36.2 comes with an upgrade of the Unity engine, which changes the minimum requirements. If you're playing on an older machine or an entry-level phone, check compatibility before jumping into a ranked session.

What to remember for your first games

Season 14 is a reset more than an evolution. With 97 minions removed and a brand-new mechanic starting turn 3, last season's landmarks won't be of much use.

Three principles for approaching the first few days:

  • Don't mechanically spend your 3 gold. The Dark Gift is an option, not a box to tick every turn.
  • Look at the minion as much as the gift. You're choosing a pairing, not an isolated effect.
  • Wait a week before trusting the tier lists. With more than 40 Dark Gifts, 60 new minions, and two heroes, nobody has a serious statistical sample yet — content creators no more than you.

This is exactly the right time to play: during the first two weeks of an overhaul of this scale, the gap between a dedicated player and a casual one has never been so thin.

Facing the new Dark Gifts mechanic, what will your first strategy be?

Frequently asked questions

Do I absolutely need to spend my 3 gold on a Dark Gift every turn starting on turn 3?
No. That's the classic trap of early games. Three gold is roughly the cost of a refresh plus a purchase, or nearly your tavern upgrade. If your economy is fragile or you haven't yet identified your game plan, passing on the gift is often more profitable than locking yourself into a path you're not committed to.
What's the difference between a Dark Gift and a Trinket?
Dark Gifts are attached to a specific minion and activate immediately when you recruit it. Trinkets are general upgrades that persist across all your minions. This season, they coexist, creating real economic pressure in the early turns.
Why aren't tier lists reliable during the first ten days?
Because with 60 new minions, 40 Dark Gifts, and two brand-new heroes, no one has a serious statistical sample yet. Content creators and regular players alike are testing in the dark. The real power levels only emerge after a week, once the aggregated data speaks.
Does the Beasts' Fishbait mechanic change my approach during the recruit phase?
Yes, it's revolutionary for Battlegrounds. Your Beasts can attack during the recruit phase, something the mode has never allowed before. It's an offensive option outside the classic combat phase, so keep an eye out for possible combos with Dark Gifts and Beast-related Trinkets.
What's the real economic challenge this season?
Gold needs to cover Dark Gifts, Trinkets, Ability activations, and your tavern upgrade all at once. It's not the strongest minion that will win, but the player who knows where to put their gold. Economy is the core skill of Season 14.

Key takeaways

  • Dark Gifts cost 3 gold on turn 3, forcing you to choose between upgrading your tavern and unlocking new powers
  • You're not just choosing a gift on its own, but a minion-plus-gift pairing — a powerful effect on the wrong unit can ruin your game
  • With over 40 Dark Gifts in circulation, no two games will ever offer you the same opportunities or the same choices
  • Trinkets coexist with Dark Gifts and grow by 47 new trinkets, doubling the pressure on your gold economy
  • A week of data will be needed to stabilize the ratings — a window where ranked and casual players are competing on nearly equal footing
