The Fable franchise was born in 2004, driven by Peter Molyneux and the studio Lionhead Studios, then owned by Microsoft. From the very first installment on Xbox, the saga stood out with a radical promise: an action RPG where every moral choice concretely reshapes both the character and the world - an aging body, a reputation that spreads, NPCs who react differently depending on your deeds.

Fable II (2008, Xbox 360) consolidated the formula with a more ambitious open world, a companion dog that became iconic, and an even more branching consequence system. Fable III (2010) attempted a political escalation - the player became king - with more mixed results. Fable: The Journey (2012, Kinect) and Fable Legends (cancelled in 2016) marked the beginning of a long dry spell, worsened by the closure of Lionhead Studios that same year.

The saga has deeply influenced the Western RPG by popularizing binary morality systems and light environmental storytelling, with a deliberately British tone - absurd humor, witty dialogue, a fantasy world that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Since 2018, Playground Games (the creators of Forza Horizon) has been steering the reboot simply titled Fable, expected on February 23, 2027. A highly anticipated return, and evidently a costly one.
