In brief

Pokémon TCG Pocket welcomes a revolutionary mechanic in October 2026: dual-type cards. Mega Mewtwo X-ex embodies this innovation with its simultaneous Psychic and Fighting types, while the first Pokémon partners (Piplup-ex and Totodile-ex) also arrive in Pokémon-ex format with an increased 3-point penalty for the opponent.

The Pokémon TCG Pocket panel at PokémonXP revealed a brand-new mechanic: dual-type cards. That is The Pokémon Company's own wording, and Mega Mewtwo X ex leads the way as "a dual Psychic- and Fighting-type".

The card can be read in the trailer: Basic Pokémon, 180 HP, the "Dual Impact" attack for 100+ damage for two Psychic Energy and one Colorless, with 40 additional damage if a Stadium is in play, and a Retreat Cost of 2. So the dual type doesn't double the Energy cost.

The real trade-off lies elsewhere. The "Mega Evolution ex rule" grants the opponent 3 points when the card is Knocked Out, compared to 2 for a regular Pokémon ex like Piplup ex. A one-point gap that comes at a real cost.

The teaser also confirms first partner Pokémon as Pokémon ex cards: Piplup ex and Fuecoco ex. The additions "start rolling out in October 2026", kicking off a new series of expansions that is still unnamed. A month that coincides with the game's second anniversary, having launched on October 30, 2024. The Pokémon Company has not published the card text on pokemon.com: the trailer is still the only place to read it.
