In brief

The Xbox Series X25, Microsoft's anniversary console launched on August 27, sold out within hours at €899.99. While French stock remains impossible to find, American resellers are already listing it above $2,500 on eBay, taking advantage of the lack of official figures on scarcity and a delivery date pushed back to November.

Microsoft's anniversary console didn't last the evening: opened Thursday, August 27 at 4:00 PM, reservations for the XBOX Series X25 were closed before nightfall. The French Microsoft Store now reads "Out of stock," and resales had started before a single unit shipped.

The French price is finally public: €899.99, VAT included, whereas Xbox Wire had only given the American price. That's €100 more than the standard 1TB XBOX Series X, still at €799.99 and in stock. The XBOX X25 Special Edition wireless controller, sold separately for €79.99, is also sold out. Delivery is set for November 13, and October 20 for the controller.

American resale figures

On August 27, Gizmodo counted more than 80 preorder listings on eBay, with sales closing above $2,500 and one seller asking for $5,000. GameSpot found asking prices climbing as high as $27,426, just listings. Nothing comparable on the French side.

The timeline adds a pitfall: the console doesn't arrive until November 13. Value Added Resource flagged a $2,500 listing promising delivery in early September, even as the seller himself says he won't have the machine until November, after eBay's claims window closes.

A scarcity that's never been quantified

Microsoft has never put a number on the run. Not on June 7, not on August 26: "while supplies last," one per customer, a numbered engraving. The figure of "25,000" circulating online comes from no Xbox press release.

There's still the freebie. Halo: Campaign Evolved came out on July 28 and is already on Xbox Game Pass: €59.99 saved for anyone not already subscribed, nothing for everyone else.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Xbox Series X25 cost in France?
€899.99 including tax, i.e. €100 more than the standard 1TB Xbox Series X, which remains at €799.99. The special controller sells separately for €79.99.
When will it be delivered?
November 13 for the console, October 20 for the controller. This delay is worsening scams on eBay, with some sellers promising delivery in early September even though they won't receive the machine until later.
How many units did Microsoft produce?
No official figures. Microsoft has not disclosed numbers for the series, only mentioning "limited stock". The figure of "25,000" circulating online does not come from any official Xbox statement.
Why are resale prices exploding on eBay?
Over 80 listings were spotted on launch day, with confirmed sales starting at a minimum of $2,500, and some sellers asking for $5,000 or even $27,426. The lack of transparency around stock levels and the delivery delay are fueling speculation.
Is Halo: Campaign Evolved worth €60?
Not for Game Pass subscribers, since the game has already been available there since its release on July 28. For non-subscribers, the savings amount to €59.99.

Key takeaways

  • Pre-orders closed before the end of the day, no console available at launch
  • French price of €899.99, i.e. €100 above the standard 1TB Series X
  • Resale frenzy kicks off on eBay with prices exceeding $2,500, even $5,000 for the most aggressive sellers
  • Microsoft remains vague about quantities produced, simply mentioning "limited stock"
  • Halo: Campaign Evolved, the included game, is already on Game Pass, which reduces its value for subscribers
