In brief

The Witcher 4 will indeed get a physical box according to CD PROJEKT RED, but probably without a PS5 disc. With Sony ending disc production for new PlayStation titles starting January 2028, and the game targeting that year, the studio has no control over the decision. The box will contain collectible physical items, but the details remain unclear.

Aggregators ran with "physical edition confirmed" for The Witcher 4. That's not quite what CD PROJEKT RED said.

Asked by The Game Business at gamescom, co-CEO Michał Nowakowski separated two things: the box, which the studio controls, and the PS5 disc, which it has no control over at all. "We know what PlayStation has announced. And we have no influence on the policies of the first parties," he explains.

The disc depends on Sony's factories

Discs for the first parties, PlayStation included, "have to be manufactured in their own factories," he reminds us. If Sony stops, CD PROJEKT RED has no fallback: the journalist gets him to confirm, in brackets, that there wouldn't be one.

Sony announced on July 1, 2026 that physical disc production would end in January 2028 for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles. The Witcher 4 is targeting 2028. Games already released are not affected.

A box, yes; its contents, later

The commitment covers the box, not what goes inside it: "whatever is the case, we're going to be for sure having a box," Nowakowski promises, "a box that's going to have some feelies in it." The word is Nowakowski's own: the small physical extras tucked into a collector's edition. He adds that CD PROJEKT RED are "big fans of people having access to tangible collectible things."

Nothing has been said about the price, the contents, or what will happen on PC and Xbox. The Game Business says the full interview will be published the following week. In short: something to unbox, probably nothing to slot into a PlayStation.

What do you think, an empty (or nearly empty) box on PS5, is that acceptable?
