In brief

Sony is reviving its PS5 exclusivity strategy through an advertisement running since August 2026, highlighting six games "only on PS5" without ever announcing it publicly. This shift, reported internally and confirmed by the press, buries the PC ports doctrine and once again forces players to choose: buy the console or forgo the single-player blockbusters.

Sony didn't publish a press release. It published a thirty-second advert. Since Monday, August 24, the PlayStation France channel has been airing Only on PS5, a film that puts back on screen a phrase the brand had stopped using: « PlayStation®5 Exclusive ».

Six games scroll by under this banner: Marvel's Wolverine, Saros, Gran Turismo 7, God of War Laufey, Astro Bot and Ghost of Yotei. The legal disclaimer only dates two of them, Marvel's Wolverine on 09/15/2026 and God of War Laufey on 02/16/2027.

What Sony has never said in public

The shift itself was never the subject of any announcement. Bloomberg reported it on March 4, 2026. Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, reportedly confirmed it to his teams during an internal meeting on May 18: remarks reported by journalist Jason Schreier, never made publicly. Sony has neither confirmed nor denied them.

The dividing line reads more clearly on Steam. Marathon, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls and Helldivers 2 are listed there: online service games keep coming to PC. Saros, Gran Turismo 7, Ghost of Yotei and Astro Bot do not. Horizon Forbidden West, which landed on Steam on March 21, 2024, belongs to the old doctrine.

Why it matters

For anyone without a PS5, the equation becomes binary again: buy the console or forgo the single-player exclusives. The reasoning attributed to Sony, that ports would have damaged the console's value, remains a publisher's stance, not a proven fact. And an ad banner isn't a signed policy: « exclusive » never meant « never anywhere else », only « not right now ».

Frequently asked questions

Why is Sony doing this now and not before?
According to the reasoning reported internally, PC ports diluted the value of the PS5 and slowed console sales. Sony is reacting to a strategy deemed counterproductive, even though this cause-and-effect link has never been solidly proven.
Will all PlayStation games now stay on PS5?
No. Online service games like Helldivers 2 and Marathon will keep coming to PC. Only single-player, narrative-driven blockbusters (Marvel's Wolverine, Ghost of Yotei, Astro Bot) are explicitly locked to PS5.
Will Horizon Forbidden West be exempt from this new policy?
No, Horizon Forbidden West falls under the old doctrine. It already has a PC port launched in March 2024. The dividing line is drawn between old ports and future games.
Has Sony officially confirmed this shift?
Never publicly. Bloomberg reported it in March 2026, Hermen Hulst reportedly confirmed it internally in May 2026 according to Jason Schreier, but Sony has neither officially confirmed nor denied it. The ad is the only public signal.

Key takeaways

  • Sony reasserts PS5 exclusives through a 30-second ad rather than an official statement, which is telling of the behind-the-scenes strategy.
  • Six prestige titles are targeted: Marvel's Wolverine, Saros, Gran Turismo 7, God of War Laufey, Astro Bot and Ghost of Yotei will remain PS5-exclusive.
  • Online service games (Helldivers 2, Marathon) will keep coming to PC, only narrative exclusives are shifting to true retention.
  • For PC players, the equation becomes brutal again: buy the PS5 or accept missing out on PlayStation's single-player blockbusters.
  • No official statement, just leaks and an ad: Sony isn't signing off on anything, which leaves the door open for workarounds.
