Is there really a playable version of GTA 6 leaking?

GTA 6: the supposedly playable builds going around are malware

Files presented as playable copies of GTA 6 have been circulating since mid-August. They are malicious software. The reminder fits in a single sentence: Rockstar has never distributed GTA 6, in any form whatsoever. Any page claiming otherwise is lying.

Why the scam has become believable

The ground was prepared. In September 2022, a breach of Rockstar's internal network leaked around 90 videos from a development build. Since mid-August, a group calling itself CyberLeek has been releasing footage whose authenticity Take-Two has confirmed, and is publicly threatening to release a playable build. The idea that a copy is circulating outside Rockstar's control has taken hold, and an absurd claim starts to sound plausible.

Leaked footage spreads through re-uploads, Discord links and unofficial mirrors, “which is exactly the environment where fake ‘leak’ downloads and credential-harvesting pages thrive”, says Marijus Briedis, chief technology officer at NordVPN.

What is not yet established

To date, no security vendor has published a technical analysis of these files. The payloads attributed to them, from credential theft to switching off the system's own protections, come from users relayed by the specialist press. They have yet to be confirmed.

The vectors reported so far: sharing sites and mirrors, Discord servers, re-uploads on mainstream platforms, pages imitating well-known services. The reflex to keep: download nothing, and enter no credentials on a page reached through that kind of link.

CyberLeek casts itself as a defender of players, while having launched its own cryptocurrency and offered to sell advertising space on its next leaks. The only date that counts remains Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look, on 27 August at 3 p.m. ET / 12 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. BST, 9 p.m. in Paris.
