In brief

Riot Games is halting active development of 2XKO at the end of 2026, just seven months after its full launch. The studio is fully refunding all purchases made in the free-to-play title, while keeping servers online and the game playable for free.

Riot Games is ending active development of 2XKO in late 2026, seven months after the full launch of its free-to-play 2v2 fighting game. That said, the studio isn't shutting down the servers: it's refunding all the money spent in the game.

The August 20, 2026 announcement lays out a precise schedule. Patch 1.3.1 arrives on September 8 with Lux, October's patch (1.3.3) brings Samira, the game's last champion, and one final patch will follow in December if needed. Starting with 1.3.1, ranked mode, battle passes, KO Points, seasons and events will disappear, and all champions will be unlocked.

The refund covers purchases made on or before August 20, including KO Points and the 2XKO Starter Edition (labels left in English by Riot). On PC, the money will go back to the original payment method, with the whole process targeted for November 2026; on PlayStation and Xbox, the procedure goes through the platforms. Owned content remains owned, the game stays free to download, offline play isn't affected, and the competitive circuit will run through the end of 2026, prize pools included.

Riot is direct about the reason: plenty of curious players, a community loyal on a daily basis, but not enough players stuck around to make a free-to-play title profitable when it costs more to run than it brings in. Akali, Senna, Thresh and the PVE mode Ascension were well received without bending the curve. The signal matters for the market: even backed by League of Legends, the free fighting game demands a volume that the industry's biggest license failed to produce. Still, ending development isn't shutting down the game: 2XKO will remain playable online beyond 2026.

Frequently asked questions

When exactly is 2XKO shutting down?
Development stops at the end of 2026. Servers will remain active beyond that: only content updates are ending, not the game itself. One last patch may follow in December if needed.
Can I get a refund for my purchases?
Yes, all purchases made on or before August 20, 2026 will be refunded: KO Points, cosmetics, Starter Edition. On PC, the money will go back to your original payment method by November 2026; on PlayStation and Xbox, the platform handles the refund.
What do I keep after development ends?
Everything you owned remains yours. The game stays free to download, playable online, and the offline Ascension mode is unaffected. Only ranked play, battle passes, and seasons will disappear starting in September.
Why is Riot ending 2XKO?
Despite strong initial curiosity and a loyal community, the game didn't attract enough regular players to cover its operating costs. Even the leverage of League of Legends wasn't enough to build the critical mass needed.
Is there still content planned before the end?
Yes: Lux arrives in September, Samira in October, and she's the last announced champion. A patch fix may follow in December if needed. The competitive circuit continues through the end of 2026 with its prize pools.

Key takeaways

  • 2XKO is ending development in December 2026, lacking enough players to make a costly-to-run free-to-play title profitable
  • Riot is refunding 100% of in-game spending starting August 20, including KO Points and the Starter Edition, directly to the original payment method
  • The game remains playable online after 2026: no server shutdown, owned content is kept, and offline mode stays intact
  • Two champions are arriving before the end: Lux in September and Samira in October, the last addition to the roadmap
  • Even the association with League of Legends wasn't enough to create the critical mass needed for a free-to-play fighting game to succeed
