Founded in 2006 in Los Angeles, Riot Games was built on a single game, League of Legends, before turning it into a universe spanning a tactical shooter, a card game, an autobattler, and an animated series. The studio has been fully owned by China's Tencent since 2015. Its trademark: free-to-play backed by an in-house-funded competitive scene. Its limit too: several of its attempts to diversify outside of Runeterra failed to find an audience.
