Virtua Fighter

Created by Sega AM2 and Yu Suzuki in 1993, Virtua Fighter firmly laid the foundations of the first great series of polygonal 3D fighting games, marking a new technical turning point in arcades and in the foundations of the modern genre. Unlike other titles betting on spectacle and showing off, the saga built its legitimacy through an almost "martial" approach: rigorous physics, animations captured from real practitioners, and priority given to positioning and mindgames rather than the appeal of flashy demonstrations.

Through its major episodes - from Virtua Fighter 2, a technological showcase for the Saturn, to Virtua Fighter 4 and 5 which lightened the historic gameplay system - the saga transformed the title's reputation into a demanding benchmark for game designers and the Japanese e-sports scene. Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage, designed for modern consoles and PC thanks to crossplay and rollback netcode, now gives the brand a central place by presenting a richer solo mode. At the same time, Sega is preparing a new Virtua Fighter project, often referred to as Virtua Fighter 6, and developed with Unreal Engine.
