Fallout 76 moves to Gen 9 on September 15 on consoles

Eight years after a disastrous launch, Fallout 76 will finally get a version designed for current-gen consoles. Bethesda has announced its "Gen 9 upgrade" for September 15, simultaneously on PS5 and Xbox Series, with promised gains in performance, stability, and image quality.

The update lands at the same time as Season 26, called "Beware the Blood Moon" in English. Its storyline centers on the Slasher: an investigation spread over several weeks, involving clues to gather, unmarked graves to dig up, and fanatics to fend off, with a unique power armor and a weapon, the Super Slasher, as rewards.

Two structural additions come along with it. "Classic seasons" will let players replay a past season alongside the current one, drawing from the same ticket pool — a direct answer to those who missed out on rewards since 2019. And unique weapon crafting arrives at workbenches: more than 80 named weapons will have their legendary modules made swappable.

What the community thinks

The reception is mixed. The move to Gen 9 has been requested since the PS5's release, and its arrival is a relief. But some players, wary after Season 26 datamines hinted at a lot of recycled rewards, are waiting to see. Bethesda has planned a public test phase on consoles before September 15, without giving a date.
