StarCraft is a real-time strategy saga created by Blizzard Entertainment, launched in 1998 on PC. The original game lays the foundations for a clash between three radically different factions - the Terrans, the Zerg and the Protoss - and becomes a cultural phenomenon, notably in South Korea where it reaches the status of a national sport with its professional leagues and packed stadiums.
The franchise expands with the Brood War expansion in 1998, which refines the competitive balance still studied today by RTS theorists. It would take until 2010 to see StarCraft II arrive, split into three narrative installments (Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void) that conclude the story in 2015. In the meantime, Blizzard releases in 2017 StarCraft Remastered, a faithful remaster of the 1998 game designed to extend the historic competitive scene.
A spin-off project, StarCraft: Ghost, a third-person shooter announced in 2002, would go through a chaotic development before its official cancellation in 2014 - a symbol of the unpredictable side of the franchise outside of RTS.
Since the end of StarCraft II in 2015 and the 2017 remaster, the saga has been dormant. It nevertheless remains an absolute reference of the RTS genre and a pillar of esports history, whose cultural weight continues to shape fan expectations with every rumor of a return.
