The Blood of Dawnwalker: how to cure poison

In brief

The Blood of Dawnwalker offers two types of poison for Coen: the poison from Ambrus and Iulian during the quest A Gold-Patined Glove, which can only be cured by spending time at the sanctuary to turn night into day, and the classic poison from Tatzelwurms which must be countered by healing faster than the damage dealt.

In The Blood of DawnwalkerCoen can be poisoned in two ways. The first is accidental: by drinking the poisoned blood of Iulian or Ambrus during the quest A Gilt-Edged Gauntlet. The second is a regular poison, inflicted notably by Tatzelwurms, those lizards that lurk in the marshes. Here's how to get rid of both.

Curing Ambrus's poison

If you drink the poisoned blood of Ambrus or Iulian during A Gilt-Edged Gauntlet, Coen gets poisoned. The sign: the health bar turns green instead of red and drains over time. A poison icon and a time indicator appear under the health bar, showing the remaining duration (10 to 12 time portions).

No potion or item cures this poison directly. The only solution: spend time at the nearest sanctuary to turn night into day. Under sunlight, the poison burns away instantly, regardless of the countdown shown.

If it's Iulian who poisoned you, you'll first need to defeat Ambrus before reaching the Altar - or load a previous save to avoid this choice. Check out our article for the fight against Ambrus, and head to the nearest Altar, which is the one at Maragir, just to the east. As soon as the fight ends, rush there in wolf form using Shapeshift.

If you hadn't added the Lizard Gland to Vera's brew (in Bitter Finale), Iulian will have died after Ambrus fed on him. Before heading to the Altar, you can interact with his body to bury him - which costs 1 time portion.

Once at the Altar, there are two ways to pass the time: the Wait option until daybreak, or unlocking perks/skills in the tree that require time portions. We recommend the second option: that way, you don't waste time for nothing.

Curing regular poison

Some monsters, like the Tatzelwurms in the swamps, poison Coen with their attacks. Here again, no item or potion dispels this poison: you have to let time pass while healing faster than the damage it deals.

During the day, rely on your healing items or certain Sorcery abilities to offset the health loss. At night, count instead on Blood Vials or a Vampirism ability to hold out until the effect ends. The status indicator at the bottom of the screen shows the poison's duration (usually 10 seconds).

Frequently asked questions

Can you directly cure Ambrus's poison with a potion?
No, no potion or item can cure this poison. The only solution is to go to the nearest sanctuary and spend time to turn night into day, which instantly burns the poison regardless of the duration displayed.
How do I know how much time I have left before the poison fades?
A poison icon and a time indicator appear below your health bar, showing the remaining duration in time segments. For Ambrus's poison, expect generally 10 to 12 segments, and for classic poison about 10 seconds.
What if Iulian poisoned me and I can't access the sanctuary?
You must first defeat Ambrus before you can go to the sanctuary. If you prefer to avoid this choice, you can reload a previous save.
How do you counter the classic poison from Tatzelwurms?
Unlike Ambrus's poison, this one doesn't disappear magically. You must let time pass by healing faster than the poison inflicts damage, using your healing potions, Sorcery abilities during the day, or Blood Vials and Vampirism at night.
Is there a difference between daytime and nighttime poison?
Yes, during the day you can rely on your classic healing items and Sorcery abilities, while at night Blood Vials and Vampirism abilities are more effective at offsetting the poison's continuous damage.

Key takeaways

  • If it's Iulian who poisons you, you must first defeat Ambrus to access the nearest sanctuary.
  • The classic poison from monsters doesn't disappear either; you must let time pass by offsetting the damage with healing items or Sorcery abilities.
  • During the day, rely on your healing potions and magical abilities to survive the classic poison.
  • At night, Blood Vials and Vampirism are your best allies against the poison that continues to drain your health.
