Metro 2039: Renegade sheds light on The Stranger's past
In brief
4A Games unveiled "Renegade" at gamescom: a trailer entirely captured in-game that dives into the story of The Stranger, the new hero of Metro 2039. Between infiltration in Moscow and exploration of Sevastopolskaya station, this second gameplay trailer refines the title's narrative identity ahead of its February 2027 release.
4A Games unveiled "Renegade" at gamescom's Opening Night Live, on August 25 at 20:00 UTC: two minutes captured entirely in-game, on the 4A Engine, blending gameplay sequences and camera work.
The studio digs into the identity of its new hero, The Stranger, the series' first voiced protagonist. Deep Silver shows him infiltrating, through brutal methods, a Moscow occupied by the Novoreich. Above all, the trailer offers a first glimpse of Sevastopolskaya station: daily life in a shelter under propaganda, from which his hunt begins. The irradiated surface also makes a return, mixing infiltration and shootouts.

What April's trailer didn't show
The April 16 trailer ran six minutes and mixed real-time cinematics with a gameplay preview: atmosphere, psychological horror, iconic gear, mutants. "Renegade" does the opposite: short format, all in-game, and a clear narrative turning point. It isn't, however, a direct follow-up to April's trailer. 4A Games had already released a first gameplay trailer, "Hunter", on June 7 at the Xbox Games Showcase; "Renegade" is presented as the second one.
Release, collector's edition and demo
Metro 2039 releases in February 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series S|X, Steam and the Epic Games Store, developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver. A collector's edition was announced shortly after, featuring a replica of The Stranger's helmet, with pre-orders opening before the end of the year. A playable demo is running at the game's booth, hall 9.1. Renegade, Novoreich, Sevastopolskaya and The Stranger have no official English localization.
