WoW MoP Classic: Getting Started in Pandaria 2026
In brief
Mists of Pandaria Classic launched in July 2025 and by 2026 welcomes a settled community with well-established progression. Whether you're brand new or continuing your journey from Vanilla, this guide covers character creation, leveling from 85-90, PvE content, and pitfalls to avoid when starting out in Pandaria.
Since July 21, 2025, Pandaria has reopened its gates on Blizzard's Progression Classic servers. After Vanilla, The Burning Crusade Classic (2021), Wrath of the Lich King Classic (2022) and Cataclysm Classic (2024), Mists of Pandaria Classic is the fourth stage of a progression that replays World of Warcraft's history expansion by expansion. A year later, the community has settled in, guilds have opened their doors, and French-speaking realms are running at full capacity.
If you're landing on MoP Classic in 2026 — whether you've been following the progression since Vanilla or Pandaria is your entry point into the journey — here's what you need to know to get off to a good start, without drowning in the sprawling guides from thirteen years ago.
MoP is often cited by veterans as World of Warcraft's most underrated expansion: a unique art direction, a mature storyline about the nature of hatred and war, and gameplay that has aged remarkably well. Needless to say, revisiting it in Classic, in 2026, is a genuinely great opportunity.
Understanding where Progression Classic currently stands
Progression Classic is Blizzard's bet on replaying each expansion one by one, with the mechanics and balancing of the time, but on modern servers. Mists of Pandaria arrived a little over a year after the launch of Cataclysm Classic, giving players enough time to finish their level 85 run before making the switch.
In practical terms, if you have a level 85 character on Cataclysm Classic, you can continue directly into Pandaria. If you're starting fresh, you'll first level from 1 to 60 through updated Vanilla content, then from 60 to 85 through the Cataclysm zones, before entering Pandaria for the 85 to 90 phase.
The real strength of MoP Classic in 2026 is that the content is stable, guides already exist, and the population remains dense on the major French-speaking realms.
Creating your character: the new Pandaren race
MoP introduces a brand-new playable race: the Pandaren. It's the first (and for a long time the only) neutral race at character creation. You begin your adventure on the Wandering Isle, a scripted tutorial zone with no faction affiliation. It's only at the end of the introductory quest that you choose Alliance or Horde — and that choice is permanent for this character.
Alliance or Horde, what's the difference?
- Alliance — historically strong French-speaking RP community, home capital in Stormwind
- Horde — dense PvP community, capital in Orgrimmar, closer to the letter of the MoP storyline
The Pandaren can play every class except Death Knight, Warlock, Druid and Paladin. It gains a doubled rested bonus and a racial talent granting resistance to stun effects — handy in both dungeons and battlegrounds.
The Monk, the new iconic class
MoP's big novelty is the Monk. The first tank/heal/DPS hybrid class Blizzard has added in a long time, it uses an in-house resource system — Chi — combined with either energy or mana depending on the specialization.
The three specializations
- Brewmaster (tank) — one of the game's most technical tanks, built around active dodging and damage mitigation through delay
- Mistweaver (heal) — heals through melee strikes, with an original Fistweaving mechanic and a very mobile playstyle
- Windwalker (melee DPS) — a very fast, very mobile, very fun melee style
If you're looking for a fun class to discover in 2026, the Monk is clearly worth trying out — it's been adjusted several times since the Classic launch and works very well in both dungeons and raids.
From 85 to 90: journeying through the zones of Pandaria
The Pandaria leveling path follows a relatively linear progression. Here's the usual order:
- Jade Forest (85-86) — the continent's entry point, an Asian-inspired lush biome, the zone where the Alliance and the Horde land
- Valley of the Four Winds (86-87) — a rural zone, the Farmer faction, very relaxed
- Krasarang Wilds (86-87) — a parallel coastal zone, very RP
- Kun-Lai Summit (87-88) — snowy mountains, pandaren monasteries
- Townlong Steppes (88-89) — territory of the Shado-Pan and the Yaungol
- Dread Wastes (89-90) — lair of the mantid and the Klaxxi, oppressive atmosphere
- Vale of Eternal Blossoms (90) — endgame hub, entry point to level 90 content
The Valley of the Four Winds and Krasarang Wilds are designed as parallel zones at the same bracket — you can do one, the other, or both. Do whichever appeals to you most if you want to save time.
A word on the Timeless Isle
Heads up: the Timeless Isle, added in patch 5.4, isn't available at MoP Classic's launch. It will arrive with the Siege of Orgrimmar phase. Keep it in mind as the destination for your final months in the expansion: a free-roam farming hub, random events, and perfect transition gear to prepare for the final raid. Don't expect to land there as soon as you hit 90.
A bit of big-brother advice: don't skip the zone quests. The Jade Forest's storylines set up all the context for the expansion, and MoP's writing is far better than Cata's.
Dungeons, raids, and scenarios: PvE content at launch
MoP Classic launches with a substantial PvE package. At launch, you have access to:
- 6 new dungeons for 5 players, spanning levels 85 to 90
- 3 raids open in phase 1: Mogu'shan Vaults, Heart of Fear, and Terrace of Endless Spring
- Scenarios: a MoP novelty — scripted mini-dungeons for 3 players, with no need for a tank or healer, with a dedicated dungeon finder
Scenarios, a format worth trying
Scenarios are probably MoP's most underrated addition. You can chain them quickly, without having to wait twenty minutes for a tank. In 2026, on Classic, it's a real breath of fresh air for anyone who doesn't feel like dealing with endless LFG — and a decent source of rewards to get started at level 90.
The modern Q-o-L features that change everything
Unlike Vanilla or TBC Classic, MoP comes packed with quality-of-life improvements we now take for granted, but which were still fairly new when it originally launched in 2012:
- Cross-realm Dungeon Finder — automatic cross-realm queuing, no more sitting around waiting as a healer or melee DPS
- Regional Auction House — you sell to the entire region, not just your realm, the economy opens up
- Transmog — free appearance customization on your gear, huge for RP and WoW fashion
- Three-choice talent system per tier — more readable than Cataclysm's big talent trees, you can switch specs in one click
If you were coming from a somewhat dated Cataclysm Classic in terms of comfort, you'll immediately feel the generational leap.
Pet battles, MoP's surprise hit
Another brand-new feature: pet battles. All the non-combat pets on your account become capturable, trainable, and battle-ready in a turn-based, Pokémon-like mode. It's a full-fledged mini-game in its own right, with its own progression, achievements, and even endgame content (legendary pets, tournaments).
Don't overlook this if you have a collector's soul — it's one of the most time-consuming and satisfying activities in MoP, and it lives very well on the margins of the rest of the game. Many players who aren't into HL raiding stick with MoP just for this dimension.
Which character should you choose in 2026 to get off to a good start?
Three profiles stand out for a player arriving without a huge optimization burden:
- Brewmaster or Windwalker Monk — new class, ultra-fast queues for heal/tank, content designed around it
- Elemental Shaman — solid ranged DPS, very good at cleave, valuable team utility
- Arms Warrior — a great classic, readable gameplay, a safe bet in melee in MoP
Avoid classes that the MoP meta marginalizes if you're looking for comfort — MoP Classic respects the original balancing, flaws included. Watch two or three recent gameplay videos before committing to a spec: MoP rotations are more dynamic than Cataclysm's, but they also have their pitfalls (buff uptime, hybrid resource management).
Don't overinvest in your main choice at the start. In 2026 the population handles rerolls well, and you can test things out calmly before settling on your main for the big raids in the middle of the expansion.
2026 Roadmap: where is MoP Classic headed?
Blizzard has communicated about a phased rollout, as with previous Classic expansions. Here are the major milestones shaping up for the rest of 2026:
- Patch 5.2 — Throne of Thunder: new raid on the Isle of Thunder, Zandalari content, arena and daily hub
- Patch 5.4 — Siege of Orgrimmar: the expansion's final raid, opening of the Timeless Isle, prelude to the conflict that will lead to Warlords of Draenor
In concrete terms, if you're starting now, you have time to reach level 90, clear the opening raids (Mogu'shan Vaults, Heart of Fear, Terrace of Endless Spring), and be ready for Throne of Thunder when it drops.
Following the Siege of Orgrimmar, Classic progression should shift to Warlords of Draenor — but we're not there yet, and there's plenty to keep you busy until then.

When you start MoP Classic in 2026, what will be your biggest concern?
Frequently asked questions
Do you need to have played Vanilla, TBC, or Cataclysm Classic before starting MoP in 2026?
What's the deal with Pandarens and factions?
Is the Monk really worth it for starting out, or is it just marketing hype?
Are pet battles really actual content, or just filler to farm XP?
What do I absolutely need to know about leveling from 85-90 in Pandaria?
Key takeaways
- Pandarens start character creation in a neutral zone, then choose their faction after the intro — a unique system to help you soak in the lore.
- The Monk is the flagship class of MoP: three very distinct specs (technical tank, mobile healer, deadly DPS), with 2-minute queue times if you play healer or tank.
- Scenarios are a great substitute for solo dungeon leveling — 3-player mini-dungeons requiring no healer or tank, much smoother overall.
- Pokémon-style pet battles are a major endgame activity and completely time-consuming if you have a collector's streak.
- The Timeless Isle only arrives with patch 5.4 (much later) — don't wait for it to start playing, focus on the linear progression zones instead.
