Sword Art Online
Sword Art Online is a transmedia franchise born as light novels written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec, published in Japan starting in 2009 by ASCII Media Works/Kadokawa.
The first arc, Aincrad, lays the foundations: 10,000 players trapped in a deadly VRMMO where each floor of a 100-level tower must be cleared to survive. Kirito, Asuna and a few key figures carry this arc, which remains the identity core of the saga. The universe then expands with Fairy Dance (ALfheim Online), then the Phantom Bullet arc in Gun Gale Online, which shifts toward a darker VR shooter.
The franchise truly exploded with the anime produced by A-1 Pictures starting in 2012, which adapts the main arcs and multiplies seasons and spin-offs (Ordinal Scale, Alicization, Progressive, etc.). At the same time, Bandai Namco exploits the license in video games (Hollow Fragment, Lost Song, Fatal Bullet, Alicization Lycoris...), cementing SAO as a major saga of the anime/video game crossover.
Influential on the wave of isekai and stories centered on MMOs, Sword Art Online popularized the VRMMO fantasy and the figure of the player-hero trapped in-game. Today, the franchise is still active: new light novels, an ongoing anime, and a game like Echoes of Aincrad that returns to its origins while offering another perspective on the first arc.
