Signed by Capcom, the Onimusha saga blends action-adventure, chambara, the fantastical and figures from historical Japan to form a proposition unique in the video game landscape. The first installment, Onimusha: Warlords, released on PlayStation 2 in 2001 and introduced a hybrid gameplay, drawing halfway between Resident Evil-style survival horror and frantic beat 'em up, while including puzzles and a resource management component. The player controls warriors gifted with Oni powers, caught up in a mission to eradicate the Genma demons, in a reshaped feudal Japan.

The main installments, from Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny to Onimusha 3: Demon Siege, are characterized by charismatic heroes (Samanosuke, with an inspired actor's face and model: Takeshi Kaneshiro) as well as very cinematic staging. Dawn of Dreams optimizes the action and combat systems to give rise to this particular blend of history and the supernatural.
