Founded in May 2001 by Charlie Cleveland, Unknown Worlds Entertainment is a development studio based in San Francisco that has become especially known for the Subnautica series, one of the greatest independent successes of this decade, although the studio is not known for that alone. Originally, the studio was a collective of developers working on Natural Selection, a free mod for Half-Life that truly left its mark on the industry. Buoyed by the critical success of Natural Selection 2, Unknown Worlds managed to transform itself into a commercial studio. In October 2021, it was acquired by Krafton while continuing to operate as an independent entity. Unknown Worlds is now developing Subnautica 2, which should soon release in early access.
