Kuro Games is a Chinese video game development studio founded in 2015, specializing in free-to-play mobile and PC games, particularly in the gacha and action-RPG genres.
The studio achieved notable success with Punishing: Gray Raven, an action game with complex combos that served as the foundation for their dynamic combat expertise. A large part of the Wuthering Waves team comes from this project.
Their current flagship title, Wuthering Waves, launched in May 2024 on PC, iOS and Android, represents their first self-published project with a worldwide release, with a major overhaul of 90% of the story after the first closed beta. Despite a buggy launch, the studio quickly reacted to player feedback, implementing numerous changes and offering generous rewards, outpacing many competitors such as Genshin Impact in terms of responsiveness.
Wuthering Waves is their largest investment to date, with a dedicated global distribution and localization team, and a planned arrival on PlayStation 5 and Epic Games Store. The game has surpassed 30 million downloads and has 850,000 monthly active players.
In 2024, Tencent acquired a 37% stake from Hero Entertainment, becoming the majority shareholder with 51.4%, while leaving the studio its strategic independence, similar to Riot Games or Supercell.
