Sega emerged as a gaming giant with the launch of the Mega Drive (Genesis in North America) in 1988, a 16-bit console that competed directly with Nintendo's Super Nintendo. Sega established a strong presence in arcade gaming before focusing on home consoles, offering popular exclusive games like Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage and Shinobi. The Mega Drive attracted a dedicated fan base and established Sega as a serious competitor to Nintendo.

Sega continued to innovate with successive consoles like the Saturn and the Dreamcast, the latter pioneering online gaming. Although Sega eventually left the home console market, the company remains a major player as a video game publisher. Sega continues to produce popular games and iconic franchises, maintaining its significant presence in the modern gaming industry.
