DC Comics - founded in 1934 under the name National Allied Publications, renamed Detective Comics then DC - is one of the two major American comics publishing houses alongside Marvel. The DC universe is the birthplace of Batman (1939), Superman (1938) and Wonder Woman (1941), three characters who defined the archetype of the superhero in the broadest sense.
In video games, DC has marked several generations. Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009), by Rocksteady, literally reinvented the superhero game: fluid combat, mature storytelling, a coherent world. Its sequels, Arkham City (2011) and Arkham Knight (2015), cemented the franchise as the reference point for the licensed action-adventure genre. On the fighting game front, Injustice: Gods Among Us (2013) and Injustice 2 (2017) by NetherRealm Studios proved that DC heroes could carry a serious competitive fighting game, with an iconic roster and an addictive progression system.
On mobile, DC is no stranger to the format: Injustice had its smartphone spin-offs, and DC Legends (2016) explored the free-to-play strategic RPG. DC gacha games have never really found a lasting audience, which makes the arrival of DCKO - a real-time PvP fighting game - all the more closely watched. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, the group's video game arm, has overseen DC licenses for years with mixed results, but undeniable hype.
