About

id Software is an American video game development studio, founded on February 1, 1991 in Shreveport, Louisiana, by John Carmack, John Romero, Tom Hall, and Adrian Carmack. The studio, now located in Richardson, Texas, has been under ZeniMax Media since 2009.

id Software is considered the pioneer of the FPS (first-person shooter) genre. It is responsible, no less, for "Wolfenstein 3D" (1992), considered the first true FPS, "Doom" (1993), the major hit that introduced players to this genre and to PC gaming, and "Quake" (1996), their first fully 3D FPS. These games marked a turning point in the industry thanks to their new 3D engines and their multiplayer deathmatch concept.
